Listen up fidgety friends!

So recently I’ve been really annoyed with some of the things my friends say to me because of my fidgetiness when it’s something I can’t control. Trying to explain to them why I have to do it is a pain and they never understand so I’ve come up with something I call, “The Salt Theory.” Basically, a persons energy is represented as salt. For a Neurotypical, they’re salt is in a nice little salt shaker and they can release as much of their salt as they want whenever they want. But for those of us with a disorder that makes us very restless and fidgety, we don’t have a salt shaker. We have to carry our salt in our bare hands. Our hands are overflowing with a mountain of salt. We continuously have salt flowing through the cracks of our fingers onto the floor. And because we don’t have the convenience of a salt shaker, letting out appropriate amounts of salt at the right times is nearly impossible.

I hope this illustration is helpful for those who don’t understand why we fidget and I hope it’s relieving to those who don’t have a salt shaker to know that they finally have a way of explaining it to people.

I like this analogy. I used it today in conversation and I especially like it because it implies that we don’t necessarily have MORE energy, we just don’t have as much control over the amount we experience at one time.

Despite our extreme talkitivity/hyperactivity we could be beyond exhausted and burning mental/physical energy we desperately need, so over-exerting ourselves can become a real issue.

I hate it when people say they wish they had my energy - it’s like they assume we never get tired, when really we can need sleep so badly but our brains won’t shut down.

Anyone else feel this way? (Lordy I hope this isn’t just me!)

What do you do when you watch a billion videos and read a billion articles about ADHD and you can relate with all of them…?

You try to stop hyperfocusing and go to bed. :s

Do other ADHDers find that symptoms get a LOT better during holidays? I mean, away from the stress of school or work?

Mine often get heaps worse because the lack of structure overwhelms me and I get an onslaught of emotional problems and can’t keep a schedule together :s

In some way I can agree with you both.

During Holidays I don't notice my symptoms that much. I think this isn't really because my symptoms get better but more because I don't really have tasks to do which would have me struggling to complete them.

But also a day structure is essential for me to handle my life. The hardest thing for me was when I started to go to university because there is no real structure. You are forced to organize yourself on your own and nobody cares if you attend the class (except there is an obligation to attend) and nobody cares when and if you start to learn.

This is really difficult for me and I didn't figure out a good way to handle my time structuring problem.

Medication dose

can someone please explain to me why i have been on max dose of my adhd medication and still cannot concentrate for shit

ADHD stimulant meds are useful at a certain dose and then become less effective again. This dose differs from person to person and does not relate to body weight or severity of symptoms, just speed of drug metabolism. It is possible your dose is too high and the meds would be more effecting at a lower dose. (I know that sounds counter-intuitive)

Otherwise things that affect concentration include lack of sleep, anxiety, under-eating, and poor study hygiene (like sleep hygiene but for your desk yay).

When I had to change to medication with delayed release I first couldn’t manage it and didn’t find the right dose for me. I then increased my dose step by step but wasn’t satisfied when I got to the maximal dose for me. Later I tried a lower dose again and find the right dose for me.

Thank you both for responding to this but idk my psychiatrist hasn’t mentioned anything about putting me back on a lower dose, if I mention anything to her she’ll probably end up switching me to a new medication. :/

The time I increased to a higher dose because I wasn't satisfied with the effect I actually didn't have a psychiatrist because I was moving to another city. I got the medication I took back then from my last psychiatrist and she was fine with the dose, but my new psychiatrist was really dissatisfied with the high dose and she pushed me to try out a lower dose with her dissatisfaction. So I tried several dose till I found the one which is good for me. I was given two different dose (one higher dose for the morning and one lower dose for the afternoon) so I had quite a good possibility to try out different dose. My psychiatrist still thinks it is a high dose although I almost decreased to half of the dose I took before, but I will keep this dose as I am feeling good with it. In your position I would just ask your psychiatrist if you could try out a lower dose. I mean lowering a dose is way better than increasing. And if a lower dose doesn't work out for you as well maybe a different medication isn't such a bad idea.

I lately wasn't really sure if my medication still works for me. I mean the dose is the best for this medication but I think after such a long time I maybe forgot how it feels like when the medication really is effective. The medication I took in school was very good for me and I was very happy with it, but as an adult you don't get this specific sort of the medication anymore, only the one with delayed release. And the delayed release medication wasn't that good for me and although I found my "perfect" dose I'm still don't think that the effect is as good as with the ones I took in school. So I don't know if this medication really is the best for me. And I think you can never really know because the prove of a good effect is only based on your feelings and impressions and this isn't a very reliable proof.

That's why the best thing we can do is try it out.
