She/her. Elder Millennial. Star Trek and X-Files but mostly the friends I made along the way.

So I wanted to hop on here and holler into the void that I miss my friends (including pals here! Hope you’re staying as safe and sane as you can!)  It’s now been over a year since I’ve gotten to snuggle a baby and I often think “I don’t know how much longer I can do this” (not in an “I’m in danger” way, just in a “I can’t believe I’m mentally capable of this” way.) So I was going to drop a text post, but then I said “Self, you should post some content. Content with a side of complaining. Also, you have so much junk in your digital files that you deemed too terrible to share in the past, but nothing matters any more.” So I went diving in my archives and stumbled upon this perfectly apt screenshot so here that is. Maybe I’ll continue dumpster diving and unearth some original content™ at some point.

Today is my 30th birthday. I'm in lockdown in a global pandemic.

Today I sat on my living room floor and read messages and opened gifts from 14 people I wouldn't have met without the X Files or this website. I videocalled with eight women who I wouldn't know without this fandom, who I rely on though we barely discuss fandom any more.

Never let anybody make you feel that the spaces and people that you find online are less than those from elsewhere.

If 2020 has given me one gift it is the reminder that these relationships are the most precious, realest things I have been blessed with. Our jobs, schools, doctors appointments are legitimate when run online, so its time to banish the stigma attached to online love, platonic or otherwise.

These spaces, where we share our nerdiest, nichest interests, develop them and find like minds are the places that will get us through shit like this year. Physical distance, language barriers, different ideas are not insurmountable here. We already have the courage to stand apart from the norm, to be passionate without shame, we are curious, cautious, resistant to the minimisation of what we know to be of value. A pandemic is no match for these people.

The world may fall apart.

I may fall apart.

They will still be there.

To all of my pocket pals. Thank you for being there, even when I have nothing left to give. Thank you for accepting what I bring when I can. I love you.

To anyone still looking for their people. Don't give up. Dont change. I love you.

Help

Please direct me to that photo of David Duchovny in a floral bucket hat with his chin tilted resting on his hands from the 90s.

I’m so glad you’re still here. I used to always come here for your x files content and then life happened. But I’ve come back on tumblr after so long and ur still active, so I’m glad 💖🥰

Oh, this is so sweet! And you are generous to call me “active” -- Life happened to me a lot the past year or so also, but I’m here at least once in a while these days. Hope all is well!

Any fun memories you care to share from that comic con?

Truthfully, comic cons just aren’t my thing. But I regretted not going to the 2016 Wizard World that David & Gillian were at. And I had a feeling this one would be one of their last joint cons & I didn’t want to miss the opportunity. Meeting them both was a blur (thankfully I have photo proof it happened), standing in line to quickly talk with Gillian while she signed my art was nerve-wracking, and the panel was just eh. But...

The best part of the weekend was finally meeting so many Tumblr mutuals that I had admired from afar including @kateyes224, @sunflowerseedsandscience, @startwreck, Puppet Mulder, @all-these-ghosts, @albanyparkavenue, @perplexistan, @datanullyx, and @contrivedcoincidences6.

So, though I have a large photo of me with David & Gillian stored away somewhere and Gillian’s autograph on my art hanging on my wall, the best memories & truest treasure from that weekend were the friendships I gained.

You can read my full recap of the weekend here.
