AniRevo 2019 - Vancouver

We needed some time to calm down, but my husband and I think it is important to speak up about Anime Revolution 2019 (aka AniRevo and AR). We have been volunteering for cons, festivals, and other events for over a decade, so we are normally pretty sympathetic to event hiccups. We know even the best planned events rarely go without a hitch and that you can't run background checks on all attendees. But this is an established event that has serious issues every year. This year in particular had a huge number of incidents which were handled extremely poorly. Sex offender(s) that were reported with evidence, only to have the con release a statement saying one was allowed to stay and insinuating autism was to blame for his sexual assaults. The problems vendors in the artist alley faced with their contracts and reports of some being removed. Reports of people with accessibility requirements or aids being harassed (including one we were involved in and will come back to later). And most recently, the statement released from the AniRevo president refusing to accept responsibility, gaslighting attendees, and saying critics are responsible and should feel guilty for someone (rumoured to be one of the sex offenders) attempting suicide. Each day, more incidents from this weekend's convention are being reported. This is unacceptable.

AniRevo should be held accountable for incidents like the one we witnessed. Our friend (who is in a wheelchair) presented her service dog team's certificate without a problem Friday, as well as at past events in the same venue. On Saturday we had been on site for hours before she was swarmed by event staff and security. No, she did not have the most common form of service dog ID on her, but she again presented her certificate which is recognized by the BC Guide Dogs and Service Dogs Act, the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, and the Human Rights Code. She explained that the organization her team belongs too has permission and legal protection from the provincial government to operate and offered to perform a task demonstration, provided the contact info for her organization, and directed them to the government website. They declined all of this and chose to detain our group for a half hour, be rude, and basically attempt to publicly shame us. We understand the importance of ensuring dogs in attendance are legitimate and do not support those that are not, but the way they treated us was not warranted nor appropriate. (Don't worry, the ball is rolling on a formal complaint.) I am so thankful she was not alone and we were not removed from the event. That said, it was a devastating, dehumanizing experience for her and we had to immediately find a quiet place to break down crying and have her service dog provide deep pressure therapy.

We cannot justify continuing to support this organization, but will never look down on someone that doesn't agree with us.
