So he leases the space from the old general store, carefully curating a minimalist sand-and-stone aesthetic, with a workspace for each writer and a gathering space near the front.

Not long after the move is the worst day of David’s life, and that’s including the day their home was raided by Canada Revenue. It’s the day he meets Patrick Brewer.

“Hi there! What can I get you?” The man inside appears to be about David’s same age, and looks infuriatingly good in an apron and cheap button up, sleeves rolled to reveal enticing forearms. The van is painted with a garish, neon logo reading Crème de la Creek, and Forearms’s weapon is actually an old-fashioned ice cream scoop, standing behind a makeshift point-of-sale counter in the van’s doorway.

We know a lot of you are new to fests, or maybe you've been around the fandom for a while but aren't quite sure about the behind-the-scenes of putting one together. So, we want to share with you some information about how we put together our fest in case you're curious.

How do we put together the schedule?

When the three of us mods joined the fandom and began participating in fests, we weren't sure how this was done. How did the fest organizers choose which works went on which days? Did it matter if someone is earlier in the fest vs. later? Are there factors beyond the work itself that impacts where someone falls on the schedule? Does someone's non-fest works or relationships in the fandom affect their placement in the fest?

If you're interested, here's how the schedule sausage got made for this fest.

When the submission window closed, we put information about all of the works into a spreadsheet (title, summary, rating, word count, chapter count, pairings/relationships, creator). We tried our best to track which works will arrive late so we didn't accidentally schedule those too early because that would be #awkward :)

Our main goal with the schedule was to try and have an array of works each day that represent different work types (fic, podfic, fanart, filk, etc.), ratings, relationships/pairings, word counts, etc. But we also want each day to be similar in terms of number of works and word count so that there's a somewhat even pace to the fest.

The first thing we scheduled were areas with lower representation and tried to spread those out across the days (e.g., WLW fics, non-fic works, rarepairs, platonic/non-relationship fics, etc.). We scheduled those first and tried to have at least one non-fic work per day and at least 1-2 non-David/Patrick fics per day.

Then we plugged in the long and medium-length fics on the schedule to spread those out. Meanwhile we also try to put in placeholders for people who requested extra time to make sure we don't schedule those too early.

With those things set, we then filled in the shorter works on each day to try and help balance overall word count, rating representation, the badge categories, etc.

It takes a lot of juggling and some shuffling, but it's a super fun puzzle to put together!

Does who a creator is matter to our schedule? Not at all! Who someone is wasn't part of our scheduling decisions beyond if someone submitted multiple works and we wanted to spread those out on the schedule, or to thrice-check we didn't schedule someone too early if they requested more time.

Does who a creator is impact their placement in the fest? Nope! To us, all of the days of the fest are equal because we don't know when people will read/check out the works. We know some people are diligent about the first few days then peter off when they fall behind while others wait a few days before they start because they might be busy or want to wait until there are more options to choose from. All that to say, being at the beginning, middle or end of our fest all means the same thing when it comes to assembling the schedule :)

Why are we sharing all this? Before we were involved with fests, we were curious how they worked and thought you might be too! Also, we know sometimes people worry that there are factors outside of their fest work that might impact their placement on the schedule. We hope this alleviates any anxieties on that front.

“What the fuck?” David mutters quietly. Or so he thought.

“You got caught out too, huh?”

David looked over to see the only other person in the room who was alone walking in his direction, looking at him with a rueful smile.

“I’m Patrick,” he said, holding his hand out for David.

“Oh, hi,” David said, looking at Patrick’s hand for a second before taking it. He has a firm handshake and when David looks him in the eyes he finds a pair of warm, whiskey coloured eyes looking back at him. “David.”

“So, I’m guessing you also didn’t realise this was a couples class?” Patrick says, rubbing the back of his neck.

David & Patrick meet when they each accidentally sign up for a couples cooking class … this is 5 times they don’t kiss and 1 time they do (and more).

Keen and Bright

Patrick reclines with his back against the seat of his kayak, resting the paddle across his strong thighs as he lays his muscular forearms on top of it, ensuring he won’t lose the all-important piece of molded plastic that will allow him to get back to the safety of solid ground. He inhales deeply, taking in the sight of the trees lining the hills in the distance. It’s calm and quiet out here, just the sound of the waves lapping in the wind and the occasional bird out in the distance. He closes his eyes, breathes in again and smells nothing but clean, fresh water as the cool breeze off the lake whips across his face, refreshing him.

Once he feels rested enough from the short break, he grips the double-ended paddle on either side and rolls it back and forth in his hands to mentally prepare himself to continue forward. He rolls it again a few more times and waits until he sees that the tip of the blade is facing up. He takes in another breath of fresh air as he sits still in the middle of the lake. The heft and weight of the paddle in his hands feels good. He really wants to get past the rocky point he can see ahead of him before turning back.
