Sky Full of Stars - Chapter Ten.

“Baby love, you’re quiet,” he called, walking around from the lounge and into the kitchen after finishing his call, finding the space empty. “Jade?”

Silence. Had she gone for a bath, and he not noticed? Checking the bathroom, he found nothing but an empty room, the same with the bedroom and her mini studio. Going back into the kitchen again, he pulled his phone out, scrolling to hit her number. It was while the call was simply ringing out that he noticed a letter next to her untouched glass of wine, picking it up. As soon as he began to read, he cut the call, concentrating on the contents.

You know, one time I read a fanfic and it triggered my psychosis, sent me into a month long episode THEN a whole year later I was on ao3 just mindlessly scrolling, I came across the fanfic title and it gave me a panic attack, but something compelled me to click it, i didn't read it but i did scroll through it, why? mental illness.

So like... ya

This is me responding to your old(?) post about someone else's fiction not being able to hurt you, this is probably just a me thing but mental illness makes you do things and react to things in insane ways that sometimes you cant control. I knew while reading that it was affecting me in some way, but I kept reading because well, I'm mentally ill, and then a month of my life dissapeared lol

I think I'm trying to make a point about something but I'm not sure

I did after the fact comment to the author and just kinda, told them about what happened, but I didn't harrassed them or something, -

-but when something does what this fanfiction did to me then you're basically obligated to let the creator know I think(they are a really good writer), I'm an adult and the fanfic was in the ballpark of something I would read and if like, 59% of it was taken out and it had a happy ending I would be fine but oh well

Oh boy, I'm starting to have a panic attack just typing this out holy hell anyways uh, I'm not disagreeing with you(?) but I am saying, don't be too quick to dismiss someone who says a piece of fiction fucked with them? idk sorry, have a good one

My friend, the fiction didn't harm you.

Your mental illness harmed you.

Random writers on the internet are not responsible for managing your mental illness for you.

You are responsible for managing your mental illness.

I knew while reading that it was affecting me in some way, but I kept reading because well, I'm mentally ill

This is self harm. You were engaging in self-harming behavior by continuing to read a fanfiction that you knew was triggering to you.

👉 You are responsible for managing your mental illness.

👉 Writers are not responsible for managing your mental illness for you.

And I hate to tell you this but messaging the author about it was absolutely harassing the author.

"I think I'm trying to make a point about something but I'm not sure"

Yeah you are.

You're trying to show that saying 'someone else's fiction isn't able to harm you' is wrong, actually, look, it harmed you! when in actuality, you just harmed yourself.

I am fascinated to see what your comment to the author was.

"Hi, I read the warnings for this fic, then read the fic and it triggered me for some reason and caused a month long a psychotic episode, and then I read your fic again on purpose, knowing that it triggered me before, and gave myself a panic attack, and you know I'm obliged to tell you this, next time can you just change half of your fic and give it a happy ending so I won't trigger myself, thanks"

No one needs to read that on a work they put time and effort into.

I was reading a fic that involved a medical procedure that gave me a panic attack out of nowhere, but that wasn't on the author. That was a me problem.

It's a me problem that is so far divorced from the author and what they wrote that telling them about it would be cruel.

And that was a me problem that I didn't even know I had until that point - I can't imagine =knowing= that I'm about to read something that would trigger me and STILL blaming the author and their fic.

Dear Reese's,

One time I ate one of your peanut butter cups and it triggered anaphylaxis. A year later, I came across another one of your peanut butter cups, and even just seeing its bright orange packaging was enough to give me a panic attack from the memories of my medical emergency. But, I still opened the package. I didn't eat the whole cup because I have a peanut allergy, but I did break it open and lick the middle.

Now I feel obliged to contact you and let you know that your clearly labeled peanut product triggers severe reactions for people with peanut allergies. If you could change about 59% of your product (the chocolate on the outside is fine! It's just the peanut butter that's the issue), I would appreciate it.

Sincerely,

art tips

  • don't call what you create "content". regardless of what it is. that's the devil talking. call it art, call it writing, call it music, call it analysis, call it editing, literally just call it what it is
  • I was going to put other things but oh my god please just don't call yourself a "content creator". you are a person you are making art / writing / music / etc you are an artist an author a musician
  • you are not an Image Generator For Clicks And Views. please. allow yourself to connect with your work by naming it properly and acknowledging yourself in kind

Gonna add on to this, if that's ok, because I think a lot of people don't know how to categorize their work:

  • Shitposting? You're a comedian, a satirist.
  • Long posts about other people's art? You're a critic (positive), a scholar.
  • Long posts exploring ideas, society, and the world around you? You're an essayist, a philosopher.
  • Can't get enough of sharing information about X topic? You're a scholar, an educator, a columnist.
  • Just love collecting and sharing other people's stuff on your blog? Archivist, curator, collector.
  • Just not sure where you fit? Babe, you're a blogger.

You don't have to be a professional (ie get paid) to be any of these things. You can claim the title without making any claims to the quality of your work. It's ok.

This is a great post, but I think it's important to highlight why it's a good idea to move away from "content creator" as a self-identifier. Be specific. Defining your niche and line of work not only helps you find resources and communities, it helps you find ways to further your career or studies if you need to figure out what you want to do.

I’m so jealous rn, I went to Iceland a few months ago and didn’t see them, tonight everyone I know saw them but me, I’m starting to take this personally 🥺😭

SO NANY FRIENDS of mine have seen them. Friends down south, friends a little further north, even friends less than 30 miles away from me, but my part of the sky remained bare. Boo hiss.

Okay how about this? You're playing tennis on the grounds of your Hamptons summer house when you notice that your usual gardener is absent. In his place? Adrien, in a pair of dirty jeans and a soil-stained tight white t-shirt, a sheen of sweat glistening on his skin in the afternoon sunlight. You catch his eye and he takes a long moment to admire you in your tennis skirt. You know right then and there this will be a very interesting summer 😏

This is giving Charlotte kissing the gardener vibes!!

I know someone who calls herself a feminist, puts her pronouns in her work email signature, donates money to women’s empowerment funds, and thinks we should deport more refugees. I also know someone who calls people ‘pussies’ when he plays video games, who doesn’t know what a pronoun is, and, for his defence of low-wage women workers in a highly-exploited industry, is a better, more strident defender of the rights of working-class women than almost anyone else I know. Of these two people, I know who is on my team, and who I want on my team, yet the standard liberal feminist calculation would have me chose the woman who loves a little deportation over the man who is occasionally uncouth, solely because the woman knows to keep her language civil, and the man doesn’t. Liberal feminists get incredibly caught up in the politics of language, because language is all they have. They don’t have a revolutionary programme for overthrowing patriarchy, so they’re forced to tinker around the edges of it, quibbling over word choice and jargon instead of building the coalitions necessary for destroying patriarchy.

yea.

Thinking about the two (male) coworkers I had a few farm jobs ago, one of whom was a very well spoken and politically knowledgeable self reported socialist who was nevertheless urging me to stay silent about the lower wages I was receiving so I didn't compromise his job. The OTHER one was a foulmouthed nineteen year old who didn't know what trans meant (but listened VERY well when I talked about it) and was absolutely up in arms about the wage inequality, and honestly any injustice in front of him. I'll let you guess which if them I'm still in touch with

Sky Full of Stars - Chapter Nine.

Huge thanks to those of you still reading this! It's so strange when I come to post, as in the writing we are well into part three of the story and currently six years ahead of this time, and so much is different to how it was back here! I can't wait to share that with you all :)

Waking up in her bed, for a second his brain tricked him into thinking she’d still be there, Adrien reaching to find nothing but an empty space. He sighed a little, looking at the time on his phone. Eight ten in the morning. It’d be one twenty-five in the afternoon in England, where she’d flown to three days before to begin filming, his own five-week stint in France to film Midnight in Paris beginning the following week.
