Why. 
They hates that he asks that, because how can they even begin to explain it? Dove’s mind is a mess of longing and grief and anger, so much anger, that they doubt that they can find the right words to explain it. Truth is, she’s not sure. She’s not sure why, she just knows that she can’t do this. But Dae deserves an answer. An attempted explanation, at the least.
She just wishes that he’d gotten angry at her in stead. That she can deal with. This, though? This just fucking hurts.
“It’s just too much.” It sounds weak, and Dove hates the way they sound as they speak those words. She puts her mug down, rubs at her eyes. If anyone is allowed to see her like this –– fragile, frightened –– it’s Dae. Still. “I can’t do it, I –” These words are empty and they know it, and Dove would prefer to just keep their lips sealed and let him figure it. Cruelty isn’t something they’re unfamiliar with, after all, but Dae deserves better. Than her. Than this. “This war, Dae, it’s fucking me up. I don’t – I can’t do it.”

anger doesn’t come to him the way it comes to dove. his anger is not visible. but it is just as poisonous. if left untreated, his anger could do just as much damage as he thinks dove’s anger is capable of. for now, the emotion he feels strongest is confusion. hurt. they wish this was a dream. but all the telltale signs of reality are plain as day, there’s too much detail, he feels too much.

their answer feels like a cop out. it’s too much. dae shuts his eyes tight, hoping it’ll wake him and when he opens his eyes he’ll be in a universe where dove still smiles at him. still, they don’t dare to look at her, eyes locked onto the cup they won’t be picking up. “ so. you’re struggling. and you’re pushing me away?”  it makes perfect sense and none at all, all at once. it’s overwhelming. “ i... i don’t understand.”

the look in his eyes is one she knows all too well. it’s one of fear, of worry that she has something on the one looking. it’s a question, a self-doubt. it fills her with a sense of pride. the ability to elicit such a reaction is one she is immensely proud of. she pauses, sips at her coffee, and grins ever wider. “home safety? that’s a new one. i’d have thought a few charms alone would do the trick. what does the muggle tech add, exactly?” she asks, her rush entirely forgotten. susan can wait - she’s not going to lose her job. she knows that much, at least. “oh, no more important than any other day. international affairs don’t always need an instant response. we can make bulgaria sweat, a little, i think.”

he smiles, not from a sense of humour over the situation, it's a defense, a trait he notices in his father. “ it has the ability to catch some people off guard. the kinds of people that can't be held back by a few charms.”  they shrug, eyes darting to the crowd on the streets consistently, clearly not relaxed to be standing in such a busy place but making no move to relocate. “ international affairs—”  it leaves their mouth before they can catch it, but they can't stop now. dae refuses to fumble in front of paris, it would be like a gazelle offering it’s neck to a lioness. “ don't you go mad talking to.. people like that all day?”

“ thanks. my fragile ego has been mended.”  he teases, but there's truth in his poorly chosen words. a truth he hides haphazardly behind big smiles and a loud voice. archie shrugs, sporting an air of nonchalance, like he isn't overthinking everything that leaves his mouth. “ fair enough. bet you would have killed it, though.”  sometimes he wonders if he'd put a little effort in, maybe he could have been playing professionally instead of living off his brother. “ plus, how many quidditch players are there in your family now? i guess they don't need another one, you're all famous enough.”
