Protect weird girls. Ya know…. the ones that used to make up intricate games on the playground about ghosts and saving the world. The ones that used to have a whole BOX of fucking rolly pollies and worms. Those girls that used to have mason jars FULL of fucking god knows WHAT on their mother’s back porch. Protect… girls. Girls that daydream too much. Girls that could go out to Walmart dressed in cow girl boots, and a faux fur coat. Girls that invent whole other worlds in their heads. Girls that love too much. Girls that don’t love quite enough. Girls that don’t look, or sound the way society expects them to. Loud girls. Quiet girls. Angry girls. Sad girls. Support girls being themselves, and being unapologetic about it. The ones that get labeled “weird” for simply existing and being brave enough to not dim themselves down, just because society tells them, too. The girls that never lost their magic once they grew up. Support weird girls.

And yes, this does include trans girls.

the reason i want to be a writer is because sometimes i consume a piece of media, a book or tv show or movie, and i am so overwhelmed by how it touches me. sometimes, there is a character or a story line that stays with me, consistently, far past after i’ve finished it, and i become enamored by the idea that someone out there, a writer, created this. a writer gave me this feeling and made me fall in love with something that they wrote. and i want to recreate that feeling for someone else.

camp nanowrimo (july) ➳ day 1

~

Yayy it’s day one of camp nano!! Alright so I kind of caved, I was going to start Stay in the Car this nano season, but I thought that if I could bang out draft one of Sky of Sinners, I’d be able to start with a clean slate! So here’s a little excerpt I did that I actually really liked, so I hope you enjoy!

Oh wow, this was incredible. I was immediately immersed not only in the characters’ situation (obviously a precarious one) but also in who they are, in their philosophy of what it is to be human and how we face mortality. Wow. If I’m not already on a taglist for this wip, I would love to be!!

summer is here which obviously means most public schools are out. unfortunately, summer isn’t the best time for students who depend on school lunches as their main source of food. by texting “FOOD” to 877877 and entering your zip code, it will find the nearest location that provides free meals.

please share this around bc it really can help students get through summer without depending on school lunch.

for Spanish speakers you can text “COMIDA” to the same number (877877)

this program is nationwide!!

For anyone who is also looking for other resources, Sikh temples have a langar hall. Which essentially is where they provide free meals to members of the community as a part of the Sikh tradition to be generous and serve the community, especially those in need. The Sikh community is all about sharing their values and resources with other no matter your religion, race, or values. You’re always welcome, please take advantage, because that’s the entire point of the langar hall.

For anyone following me!

Acing pacing in your writing

I’ve read too many books and watched too many shows where pacing has ruined a good story. So, here are some of my tips for getting pacing right:

1. Don’t take too long to get to the inciting incident

  • Look, showing the ordinary life of your protagonist might be interesting if there’s something strange about their life, but readers want stuff to happen.
  • At least with genre fiction, you shouldn’t take too long to get to the action - the event that gets the story going.
  • If you can do it well and have readers invested from the start, you can start with the inciting incident. However, for most works I would recommend having it in the second chapter.
  • Your readers want to know what the story is about, not what the character thinks of his English teacher

2. Keep it moving, but don’t rush

  • Action is important. It drives the story and it’s interesting. You should make sure to put enough action in your work. Things should be happening.
  • BUT a novel is not a play or a movie or a comic. What makes reading a full-length novel so entertaining is the detail. The in-depth characterisation and description. The emotion and thought processes.
  • So, keep it moving, but don’t sacrifice the juicy details. Don’t skip from one action or dialogue scene to the next without taking your readers deeper into the intricacies of the story and characters.
  • It’s a delicate balance that can only truly be found by reading a lot and practicing.

3. Avoid a sagging middle

  • Your beginning is solid. Your end is exciting. But the middle is a chaotic mess that bores the reader. Trust me, it happens more than you might believe.
  • Sagging middle syndrome is a thing, and the only way to avoid it is to plan.
  • Look, I like pantsing, but planning the middle of your novel will help your pacing exponentially.
  • Make a rough outline of what needs to happen to get your characters to the climax. Add a few lighter/character-driven scenes where there are too many action scenes in the sequence. Remove events which are unnecessary. And make sure that everything makes sense!
  • This counts for second books in series as well. It should be good on its own, not just as a filler.

4. Don’t fast forward to the end

  • I’m looking at you, Game of Thrones.
  • If you’ve built up the story and set up everything for the final big bang, you have to deliver.
  • Keep the pacing somewhat similar to that of the rest of the story. Your readers have gotten used to it. And if they’re still reading at that point, they probably like that pace. Don’t write a relatively slow book and then have the climax be over in three pages.
  • I know you want the climax to be exciting. So, yes, make it a little more fast-paced than the middle. But not massively different.

5. Trust your characters

  • As with every aspect of creative writing, character is most important.
  • Is your character experiencing the scene quickly and choppily? Or are they slowing down and taking in everything?
  • If you stick with what your characters are feeling, you will get it right.

Look, exams have fried my brain. So, this isn’t the most well-formulated post I’ve made. But I hope that it can be helpful.

Reblog if you found these tips useful. Comment with your own pacing tips. Follow me for similar content.

Character arcs are a must too, especially through a series of books, movies or a series. I think if a character changes drastically from where they are in the beginning needs to be built up properly. If it doesn’t work at first, try it and see how it goes another way. That’s the beauty of writing

In this era, if you have fun slice-of-life stuff that is great but messes with the pacing of your story, you can just cut it from your novel and put it up on your website as bonus content for your fans. That way they still get to read and enjoy it, and you don’t have to worry about it making your plot drag. (Just make sure you don’t take a crucial character development moment with it.)

you know what actually pisses me off? when I finally start to feel a smidge of confidence in my writing ability and then some JERK POSTS A SINGLE LINE FROM A TERRY PRATCHETT NOVEL AND IT’S BETTER THAN ANYTHING I WILL EVER WRITE NO MATTER HOW MANY MILLENNIA I SPEND TRYING!

Terry was a professional writer from the age of 17. He worked as a journalist which meant that he had to learn to research, write and edit his own work very quickly or else he’d lose his job.

He was 23 when his first novel was published. After six years of writing professionally every single day. The Carpet People was a lovely novel, from a lovely writer, but almost all of Terry’s iconic truth bomb lines come from Discworld.

The Colour of Magic, the first ever Discworld novel was published in 1983. Terry was 35 years old. He had been writing professionally for 18 years. His career was old enough to vote, get married and drink. We now know that at 35 he was, tragically, over half way through his life. And do you know what us devoted, adoring Discworld fans say about The Colour of Magic? “Don’t start with Colour of Magic.”

It is the only reading order rule we ever give people. Because it’s not that great. Don’t get me wrong, very good book, although I’ll be honest I’ve never been able to finish it, but it’s nowhere near his later stuff. Compare it to Guards Guards, The Fifth Elephant, the utterly iconic Nightwatch and it pales in comparison because even after nearly 20 years of writing, half a lifetime of loving books and storytelling Terry was still learning.

He was a man with a wonderful natural talent, yes. But more importantly he worked and worked and worked to be a better writer. He was writing up until days before he died.  He spent 49 years learning and growing as a writer, taking so much joy in storytelling that not even Alzheimer’s could steal it from him. He wouldn’t want that joy stolen from you too.

Terry was a wonderful, kind, compassionate, genius of a writer. And all of this was in spite of many many people telling him he wasn’t good enough. At the age of five his headmaster told him that he would never amount to anything. He died a knight of the realm and one of the most beloved writers ever to have lived in a country with a vast and rich literary tradition. He wouldn’t let anyone tell him that he wasn’t good enough. And he wouldn’t want you to think you aren’t good enough. He especially wouldn’t want to be the reason why you think you aren’t good enough.

You’re not Terry Pratchett.

You are you.

And Terry would love that.

I only ever had a chance to talk to Terry Pratchett once, and that was in an autograph line.  I’d bought a copy of The Carpet People, which was his very first book, and he looked at it with a faint air of concern.  “You realise that I wrote that when I was very young,” he said, in warning.

“Yes,” I said.  “But I like seeing how authors grow.”

He brightened and reached for his pen.  “That’s all right then,” he said, and signed.

Fitting in with skateboarders means adopting an almost constitutional resistance to corny gestures. After all, skating, as a recreational act, is relentless, toilsome, boring—it requires a commitment to drudgery and community that quickly weeds out those with impure motives. In a sellout era, it may be one of the few remaining subcultures that has resisted being swallowed by commercial appropriation.

new writerblr intro ☀

I’m mads, 25, chaotic bi disaster, and have been writing for years but just recently getting confident enough to where I might be published (some day). I’m still new to the writerblr community and blown away by the new works, characters, and worlds I’ve been able to read!

I currently have two wips–  Both have queer women/women of color leads/relationships and heavy religious elements from my own studies of theology and world history.

  •  The Umbra and The Abha is a high fantasy standalone i’m experimenting with and devoting most of my time to. About two women on opposite sides, bad blood, and knowing each other inside and out.
  • Thunderfell is on a back burner in the meantime while I work on my style and structure so I can do the story justice over a four book series. It has shifted a lot since I began working on it originally as a graphic novel at age 16, but the characters have always stuck with me.  (this wip page is incomplete but I love yelling about it!)

Now that I’m home I’ll be posting snippets, edits, character sketches, and playlists for both as well as sharing writing tips and inspiration! The rest of my page is a bit of a mess until I settle on a tag system, etc.

my main is @jardani-jovanovic and twitter is @madsaialik !

Thank you so much to @mvcreates and her #violetvineyard for inspiring me to make my own writerblr!!!
