fuck it, i never ever do those “reblog for X, this one really works!” posts, but this one doesn’t have any of that BS, this is just straight up wishing us good things; and then the comment doesn’t even say any of that either. Zero claims on this post, all positive vibes

May you end this week feeling ever more certain of a future you’ll love

my cat needs an echo-cardiogram

hi y'all, my dear cat Henley, pictured below enjoying the physique of brad pitt, is in need of an echo-cardiogram because the vet believes she is experiencing heart failure:

henley is the most creature of all time and i love this beast more than anything. absolutely anything would help me at this time.

if it is of interest to you, if you are able to donate anything to help my girl with the procedure, i will write you a short ~100 word drabble on request. i can write for fight club, good omens or house md. happy to write ns//fw if you are an adult. this is "pay what you can" so i do not have a fixed price. anything helps.

i also have z//elle but please contact me privately for this

even if you cannot donate, i appreciate any reblogs. thank you.

Speaking of fanfiction.net, did you know that while it was seven years ago and therefore obviously well out of date (though given the declining traffic over the past few years, that's not the biggest issue), some insane person (positive) on archive.org managed to do the unthinkable and archive a full snapshot of the site despite its infamous unarchivability; I didn't until I went looking for if anyone had good tips on downloading from there easily and found a reddit thread from 2016. It's here. So while I continue to fret about how goddamn difficult archiving the website in full will ever be when it inevitably collapses on us randomly, at the very least we have a snapshot of it as of 2016, in fact.

Looks like fanfiction.net is gone. Probably should have backed up the fic I had there. Woops. Too late now.

Okay, this is very weird. The green leafy thing is what I’m seeing but apparently there are multiple people who can still access the site? I’m very confused right now.

I did not have access to fanfiction.net on my phone. Did have access to m.fanfiction.net. On my desktop PC, I’ve got access to both. Might be some sort of technical issue but if you have fic up there that you haven’t crossposted or saved, now is a good time to do it!

It’s somewhat difficult to download fics off fanfiction.net or even to copy-paste, so here is a link to a web-based downloader that will download fics from ff.net to your format of choice - it automatically downloads as an epub, but you can also get downloads for mobi, pdf, or zipped html. this side is also compatible with a number of other text-based fanfiction sites. this is what i’m using to archive my earliest fanfictions - 2002 and 2003!

Seattle Public Library is doing this awesome program called Books Unbanned that allows teens and young adults (ages 13-26) access to their collection of e-books and e-audiobooks from anywhere in the USA. All you need to do is fill out a simple form and you get their Books Unbanned card. Please share this information far and wide. I know they're not the only ones to have done this, but the more the merrier!

Hello, everyone. I'm asking for help from my fellow tumblr users in stopping proposed cuts towards the New York Public Library. In spite of all the importance and aid the library serves to NYC community, Mayor Adams and the City Council are now planning to subject the NYPL, Brooklyn Public Library, and Queens Public Library (together, “Tri-Li”) to $52.7 million in budget cuts. The library is already extremely underfunded and these cuts could take what is already a bad situation into a detrimental one.

Libraries for communities, especially those often invisible and forgotten by society, like the young, the homeless, the disabled, and immigrants. It provides both educational and safe services to everyone. The fact is there is a growth in people going to the library and demand has grown for library cards in the last year--with us dealing out 140,000 new library cards in 2022 and we are on track to issue 170,000 in 2023.

People need and want the library! It doesn't deserve to be dealt such severe cuts by the City Council!

So I'm asking everyone on tumblr to please sign this if you can and reblog it to spread it around. There is an optional donation if you'd like but it's not required. We just want your voices and signature! Anything you can offer on the list, whether it's a reblog or another name, can help!

The fact that Microsoft Word has to be a subscription is upsetting. I already paid for it why do I have to pay again

Yes please be mad about it, genuinely- You used to be able to purchase a single disk to install it and use it forever after that initial purchase of one key. It sickens me to see all this stuff which used to be a one time purchase be shunted under a subscription now.

"Why is pirating going back up?!"

This. This is why. People don't mind paying a high price for software if it's only the once, or every 4-5 years.

But having to pay a high price regularly? Especially in the cases where you lose access to your own work if you don't?

That's why people are pirating software.

It’s possible to buy a non-subscription version of Word; Microsoft just intentionally makes it very difficult to find (and also expensive).

However, I know a guy who knows a guy website: MS Office Pro for $50. If the link starts going to a Page Not Found, just search the site; they usually have some form of this sale available.

Worth noting: while $50 is still more money than $yo-ho-ho, that money is a great way to make VERY clear to Microsoft that we DO want one-time-purchase products, not subscriptions.

yooooo

this works!

choking on water is the worst because how do you stop choking? drink something? well ive got some bad news for you

Lean your head forward, preferably to knee level, and let the water kind of drain out of your mouth. When your are able to, take deep slow breaths. No heimlich maneuver or physical assists from somebody else should be used beyond this, otherwise you could vomit and escalate the issue. Its about keeping the larynx open. Hopefully this helps.

this is why its depressing to work in a pharmacy.

Avatar
iatrogenic

I was definitely a profit killer when I worked in a pharmacy (which honestly was my favorite job in the entire world, but it was short-lived and nowadays you can’t work at a pharmacy like that, it’s all tied in with corporate retail and no one should ever trust me with a cash register ever). It was not, however, actually a profit killer for the pharmacy, just for the drug companies, so no one cared. These days I do medical billing, which means I actually bill OUT from hospitals so I’m mostly spending my professional time taking money away from insurance companies.

I will now impart all of my profit killing resources onto you, in case you don’t know them. I think most of you know them, now. But just in case you don’t.

THIS IS US-CENTRIC. I’M SORRY.

1. GoodRx - this thing has an app now, so you can look up the best places to get your expensive medicines at the lowest possible prices without insurance on the go, and you no longer have to print coupons because you can just hand over your phone or tablet. Times have changed for the better with GoodRx. Definitely use it before trying to fill your scrip, because it will tell you the best place to go. (You can do that on the website, too.)

2. NeedyMeds - Needymeds is basically the clearinghouse of drug payment assistance. They have their own discount cards, but also connections to many patient assistance programs run by drug companies themselves. They are good assistance programs, too.

3. Ask your county - This is not a link. This is a pro tip. Most county social services will have pharmacy discount programs for people with no and/or shitty pharmaceutical coverage. You can often just find them hanging around at social services offices; you can just pick one up and walk off with it.

4. Ordering online - There are a few safe online pharmacies. I keep a little database in a text file on my computer. Most of them are courtesy of CFS forums, my mother or voidbat, so a lot of that is a hat tip to other people, but if you’re in need of a place to get a drug without a prescription … first I’ll make sure you 100% know what you’re doing for safety reasons and then I’m happy to turn over a link.

5. Healthfinder - A government resource that helps find patient assistance programs in your area. This might also point out the convenient county card thing. RxHope is something a lot of people get pointed to via Healthfinder that’s a good program.

6. Mental Health America - Keeps a list of their best PAPs for psychiatric medications, which can be some of the most expensive and a lot of pharmacy plans don’t cover them at all.

This is so important ppl.

Signal boost the shit out of it!

Booooooooooooooooooost

Good Rx Saved my family a hundred dollars a month while I was getting signed up for CHIP seriously it’s a life savor especially for ridiculously expensive drugs like abilify

Useful info, friends! ;)

Since many of our followers are on medications, I feel like this would be an important resource. -Luna

Also! Some drug companies have patient assistance programs where they send you the drug for FREE if you are uninsured, or if your insurance doesn’t cover that drug.

Do a Google search for “patient assistant programs” + (your med), or search the manufacturers website. Sometimes the info is online; other times you have to call.

Even some of the big name pharma companies have this. It’s certainly not all companies, or all meds, but it is worth a shot.

Before Obamacare, I lost insurance and couldn’t pay for my mood stabilizers (kiiiiinda important to have those when you’re bipolar.) I was on generic Lamictal, but I went to the official Lamictal website, filled out a form with a valid prescription, and they mailed my meds to me every month for free.

If you know anything about bipolar disease, you know that that was a literal life saver. Patient assistance programs ftw!

This is so important given the recent vote to repeal Obamacare. And the cartoon above is so on point They’re literally voting to kill people. Literally.

Some of my meds are no longer going to be partially covered by my ridiculously expensive private insurance. I just used the GoodRX website to look it up, and I can either spend $40 at Target to pay for one of them out of pocket–per month–, or I can get it at Sams Club for $4. No that is not a typo. The drug I need to take every single day to keep my allergies from spiraling out of control (yay auto-immune bullshit) is literally ten times cheaper at Sams Club. Holy shit.

Signal boost for my US buds

In the past 24 hours I have seen three separate video essayists I admire talk about how YouTube is currently screwing them over with bullshit content claims. Something fucky is going on here.

Ask a Mortician, a channel that posts educational content about death and the funeral industry, is getting content claimed under accusations of "display of non-graphic bodies without educational intent" and "violence with blood and gore," among other things, which is completely untrue.

Dead Meat, a channel that does reviews and analysis of horror media, is getting aggressively hit with copyright claims despite all their content falling under fair use review and critique. The most recent claim is over single tiny clip in an hour long video.

Kaz Rowe, a video essayist who talks about history and media, is dealing with the same thing, over a tiny clip included in their video about the Wizard of Oz.

All three of these channels are ones I really enjoy and admire, so if you're looking for new content to check out, go give them some love? They're all fighting uphill battles just to get their work seen and could use the views right now.

Jessie Gender is now also getting hit. She's a trans woman making videos about gender, sexuality, and pop culture, and her new video has been hit with a strike for "sex and nudity."

I know that YouTube is generally garbage and has been garbage for ages, but four big channels I watch all getting hit in the span of just a couple days? Weird. Very weird. Not liking it at all.

Folks in the notes have added several other channels getting hit recently, so yeah, something's definitely fucky. I don't know if it's more fucky than YouTube's usual level of fucky, or if I'm just noticing it more, but goddamn. :(

here's my yearly "donate to a website that matters" post

instead of donating to a site that willingly hosts cp of real life children and teens please consider donating to archive.org.

archive.org preserves any type of media you can imagine. books, music, websites, software, pretty much anything that can fit on a computer. it's nearly the modern-day library of alexandria.

archive.org has given me so many resources that i would otherwise not have access to, such as obscure books, obscure music, dead webpages, legacy software and way more. it's helped me find so many things that i thought were lost to the aether forever.

as you can imagine with the amount of data they have to store, keeping the site running is costly. much like wikipedia, they function on donations (as no one with mad money would be interested in anything remotely as beneficial as knowledge preservation).

It's so important to remember that tumblr is bad. Has been bad. And will likely remain bad for the foreseeable future. And that is vital to our survival. If Tumblr was a good website that worked, it would get turned into a corporate hellscape like every other site. It's so important that Tumblr is broken and poorly run and impossible to effectively navigate. It's all that's keeping us safe.

tumblr management know we feel this way though. They’ve just added trackers to sharing urls/links. The first step to targeted advertising, yay!

don’t get complacent about the possibility of tumblr becoming a corporate hellscape
