Hey remember when US and Russia was all like “We’re the best!!! We’ve won the space race!!!!” But India sent a kick-ass space probe to Mars and the whole mission was fuel efficient, costed less and a roaring success in the first try and then they were like “…..wait no that can’t be true” and still have the audacity to call us “underdeveloped” or only view us as a ‘third world country’? :)

For anyone who needs more info, the probe was called Mangalyaan (which literally means space probe vehicle) or Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) and you can also get more information here and here

Remember when NYT mocked India for this very thing and an TOI (a major indian newspaper) responded with this? :)

They were being racist asf and we were till respectful literally fuck you if you think ‘third world counties’ can’t be better than you

white people can and should reblog this

and shout out to the women engineers integral to the launch

“Indian staff from the Indian Space Research Organisation celebrate after the Mars Orbiter Spacecraft entered Mars’s orbit.

On November 5, 2013, a rocket launched toward Mars. It was India’s first interplanetary mission, Mangalyaan, and a terrific gamble. Only 40 percent of missions sent to Mars by major space organizations—NASA, Russia’s, Japan’s, or China’s—had ever been a success. No space organization had succeeded on its first attempt. What’s more, India’s space organization, ISRO, had very little funding: while NASA’s Mars probe, Maven, cost $651 million, the budget for this mission was $74 million.

This was not the only success of the mission. An image of the scientists celebrating in the mission control room went viral. Girls in India and beyond gained new heroes: the kind that wear sarees and tie flowers in their hair, and send rockets into space.”

No one’s saying this so I guess I’ve gotta: no more shirtless scenes for men if the actors gotta starve himself. Its just as bad as woman being forced to lose weight for a needless sex scene/photshoot what have you. If it endagers the health of the individual it should not be encouraged.

Protesting is a FELONY in Tennessee now…Facism at it’s finest (x)

I’m sorry, but people need to know this. This is LITERALLY the most blatant telltale sign of totalitarianism and this needs to be spread like wildfire. DO NOT LOOK AWAY.

In case you don't know, this literally happened in Brazil. One of the first fatal victims of COVID-19 was the maid of an upper-class woman who had just arrived from Italy and knew she had the symptoms.

These are some infos that I read in the comments:

The original artist is Ademar Vieira. He has a Facebook and an Instagram (ademar_vieira).

The maid's name was Cleonice Gonçalves and she had worked for the family for decades. If anyone wants to read about her case and the larger Brazilian issue, here's the LINK

in case you didn’t know, The Dixie Chicks, an extremely successful country singer trio in America, recently changed their name to The Chicks, as ‘Dixie’ is apparently a nostalgic name for the Civil War-era South.

They have also released a new song and video, which is what I really wanted to bring up - I would never have known about it, because I am in no way involved or subscribed to country music, but my mum learned about it and passed it on to me and I’m so glad she did - it’s called ‘March March’ and is absolutely worth listening to but 100% MORE worth watching. It REALLY doesn’t matter what music genres you love or hate I really think you, like me, if you believe in activism and progressive change, will at least feel a little moved by this music video. It’s very well done and quite powerfully edited. Here’s the youtube link.

awesome other stuff to know about them, thank you @littleredruns and @dancingatbraebent

No, seriously, you need to watch this.

Give it a watch.

This isn’t what most of us think of country these days- the nationalist pop songs where the twang supposedly makes it country. This is some proper old school Johnny Cash sort of music and it’s got something to say.

in 2019, Ken Burns and PBS just did a really fascinating retrospective on Country Music.  And one of the things that resonated with me was that if you were interested in the folk tradition, or female singer-songwriters in the 90′s, chances are you listened to country.  Because that’s where the women who were forced out by the pop machine ended up.

9/11 changed that in one fell swoop.  Almost overnight, I went from listening to, and buying, a LOT of country music, to feeling alienated and frightened by it.  The aggressive, jingoistic, and very, very masculine wave of post 9/11 country music swept away a lot of excellent artists, and left us with the ‘bro country’ that we’re still dealing with today.

BRB, off to dust off a few cds.

Their music really is great. I grew up listening to them! Here’s their Essentials CD. I wonder if their old stuff will keep their old name? Or if they’ll try and ‘edit’ it?? Give em a shot!

Anonymous asked:

Sorry if I am being ignorant, but what exactly is wrong with the word "obesity"? It was CW'd on that Korean video

The term “obesity” medicalizes fat bodies, typically in the absence of any evidence of actual disease.

For example, if you see your doctor for a physical and they assess your weight and height, you will be diagnosed with “obesity” if your body mass index (BMI) is over 30. This diagnosis will be made without any additional testing to determine whether you actually have a health condition. It will be made even if you report that you feel healthy and have no concerning symptoms. This, despite the fact that the BMI is a weak and inaccurate predictor of future health (forget about using it to predict current health).

From there, the diagnosis of “obesity” can be used to deny healthcare. It is classed as a pre-existing condition by many insurance companies in the US, for example, which is why so many fat activists are gravely concerned about legislation aimed at allowing insurance companies to legally deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions, an act that is currently illegal under the Affordable Care Act.

Once applied, the diagnosis of “obesity” fuels dangerous medical discrimination by encouraging doctors to attribute any and all symptoms of ill health to fat people’s weight – after all, our weight itself is a disease per the “obesity” framework.

This and other forms of medical discrimination directly harm fat people by leading us to avoid medical care, often at a detriment to our health, and by leading doctors to overlook symptoms of actual disease, often until it it too late to intervene.

And then they turn around and say we died of “obesity,” despite the wealth of evidence demonstrating that anti-fat prejudice itself makes fat people sick.

For these and many other reasons, many fat people hate the  term “obesity” and do not trust the intentions of people who use the term, especially thin people.

My friend from Lebanon wrote up a really good thread on Twitter I thought I should share here, just to clear up some of the inaccuracies floating around:

And here are some of the links they provided:
