Afternoons in Utopia

Fuck noromos. ;) Caryl, Mulder & Scully, Jaime & Brienne, Car Share. I ALWAYS have receipts.

A long time ago, when I was in an elementary school - I think it was around 2005 - you could just make yourself a blog. For free. In fact, you could have as many blogs as you please. It was a service from one of the most popular websites here. And boy, did we have a lot of those.

It was before I have learnt about fanfiction.net. It was way before Ao3. It was the place where the fanfics were born for us.

There was a popular fanblog for one of the most beloved franchises in my country. It even won an official contest for the best fansite. And it hosted their own contest for "a character's diary" type of fanfics. We were to write new stories and post it, first person POV, and they were choosing the best in their category.

I won in one and I was there, writing, for... not sure how long, but at least a year, having great fun. But it's not about me.

Thanks to that, I've found another blogs with fanfics. One of them - with a story exclusively of my favourite characters.

And I just want to say - it was one of the most formative experiences of my life.

I loved this story. I loved this story so much I was using all of the prepaid card money on my Nokia to read even a small glimpse of the newest update when on vacation and away from my PC (let me remind you, it was 2005!). I actually became friends with the author and we are in contact to this day.

This fanfic was so, so important for me.

Was it good? It was a story written by middleschooler for another middleschoolers. But for me it was the best. Was it popular? No, it wasn't. I mean... it was 2005. The "popularity" in today's terms wasn't really reachable for us. Why was it so big for me? Because it was about my favourite blorbos! For us, back then, it was the whole world. It was our happy place. It was my happy place.

What I want to say is - you never know, if something you write, however small, won't become this Very Important Thing in someone's life. Maybe not one of the milestones, but a comfort fic. A thing you remember when you get sad. Something significant- even for one person.

I don't know if anyone else remembers that blog and the story it held. It is long gone.

But I can still, 20 years later, recall all the names of the OCs.

That's the power you hold.

Keep writing.

Sometimes I see people say that a book reads like a well-written fanfic (derogatory) and I'm like oh, y'all really don't understand what I'm into. You're saying this has a heavy focus on character development, a slight overindulgence in commas that leads to an almost lyrical rhythm, a few too many fragments so the narration feels more natural/lived in, a couple too many metaphors (though I can never have enough metaphors), just enough world-building to buttress character arcs, and a nice dash of good-old fashioned fanservice? And that annoys you?

Do y'all just not like fun anymore?

Do you know what it means to not believe in God? Everything is pointless, no great beyond to thank or pray to. You lose hope and you got nothing but your shaky legs to pull you up. Do you know what it means to lose everything you ever cared for? For most of your life it was just rusty metal parts and people who spoke of peace as if it was a dirty word. A caress that echoed like a slap, the sting of leather on your back.

And then there she is. On the other side of the Atlantic, saving you again and again and again as if you're worth it. You, who denounced her like Peter did to Christ not because you don't love her but because you always thought that a rotten thing like you was doomed to never hold something blooming like her.

You found something in France. Yes, you did; like a castaway on a deserted island. You thought you were born to follow and for the first time you got to lead; not pretending to be something. That you're not; a weapon and an open wound at the same time. You saw a boy who never knew of pain and thought that if you kept him pure then maybe a part of you would heal.

And still, you didn't believe in God.

It only took her again to raise your eyes and thank the invisible. You forget about the blood in your hands, the next battle, the ghosts in your head. She is the miracle, you would fall to your knees for. And she is there, not in a dream but in front of you. A body to hug, a hand to hold, a shirt to grab on to. Real. She is bones and blood and a pumping heart.

No, you never believed in God and you don't think you'll ever will; but if this life has taught you something, if you believe in one thing, then it's her. It's always going to be her.

“There’s only TWO main characters going on a journey with a bunch of other characters”

Why is it so hard for so many people to grasp this? This was always the intent. Once Melissa returned, this was always what it was going to be.
