and in the end...

...all that matters is

how kind you were to yourself and others,

how you picked yourself back up, and

how you kept yourself going.

you're capable of all of this. you've got it

Reading Les Mis is like:

This is Valjean, who loves books and reads all the time.

This is Javert, who hates books but will read because that's what Responsible Citizens Should Do.

And this is Victor Hugo, who is an author and assures you there are no biases whatsoever in these creative choices.

Being Jewish (or just not Christian in general) can make reading Les Mis such a funny experience. It’s such a catholic story. But I always forget that and I’m sitting there wondering why characters make certain choices and then I remember and I’m like “Oh right. Jesus.”

“She’s a star-gazer, a dreamy, sensitive soul. She’s a nymph taking refuge in her illusions. She wanders about in a garden, this sweet fanciful girl.”

Victor Hugo, Les Misérables (1862)

objectively, “I would know those rippling muscles anywhere…” is the funniest plot point in les miserables

romanticize learning, not school

The education system (in the U.S. at least) sucks! School sucks!

  • High expectations get set on you and you exhaust yourself trying to achieve them
  • Often, it promotes unhealthy competition and causes you to compare yourself to other students, even though everyone has different skill sets and circumstances
  • Being neurodivergent makes it HELL

School doesn't DESERVE to be romanticized. Burnout sucks. You're not going "above and beyond," you're trying to push yourself into unbreathable altitudes.

Rather, consider romanticizing learning:

  • Researching because gaining knowledge is fun, you like how it feels to understand the world around you
  • Teaching because you want to spread that knowledge to others
  • Finding your own engaging methods

Giving yourself control. Learning because you want to.

you wait till tomorrow to eat that candy, to put on that new sweater, to start that notebook, to use your best cologne, to read that book.

and suddenly the candy is five years out of date, the sweater is no longer matching who you are and how you wanna be perceived, the notebook has now yellow paper, the cologne lost the scent and only smell like alcohol and you already had enough spoilers about that book.

yet the tomorrow never came, the perfect day never happened. the sky isn’t getting any brighter, and then you realize a sunrise wont change your life.

there’s nothing more romantic than someone choosing to learn you. flipping the pages in your soul delicately and digesting your chapters with an open mind no matter how difficult or uncomfortable some of your moments read, treating each bookmark with no judgment, but pure love.
