Hammer of the Swift

Rob Sheffield for Rolling Stone Magazine (July issue)

With her new stadium tour, Taylor has officially entered the post-hits phase of her career - and it couldn’t be more fun.

When Taylor Swift first showed up, in 2006, she was a teenage girl with an acoustic guitar, which she could play, and a Southern accent, which she couldn’t play at all. She used to just stand onstage with her tear-stained guitar every night and introduce herself: “My name is Taylor. I write lots of songs about my feelings. I’m told I have a lot of feelings.” She’s glammed up the show since then, but the premise is the same: her complete and utter refusal to tone it down a notch. In the tradition of great pop cranks like Prince and David Bowie, she constantly sheds her celebrity skin, refusing to repeat what she did last year even when everyone’s begging for more of the same. She’s got the fanatic urge to re-earn her crown every night.

Catherine can’t win

*announces pregnancy*: “she keeps producing babies and nothing else”

*has HG*: “she’s faking it because she doesn’t want to work”

*works more after becoming full time royal*: “she feels threatened”

*appears 100% polished outside Lindo Wing*: “she gives unhealthy expectations to new mothers!”

*takes maternity leave*: “if she loves her children that much then don’t become a royal! my mom worked when she was pushing me out from her body so why does Catherine need it she isn’t special”

*goes to polo with her children*: “she’s staging it because she doesn’t want people to forget about her”

*goes to engagements during maternity leave*: “she wants to hog the limelight”

*doesn’t appear during maternity leave*: “she has 1000 nannies why can’t she appear just for a short while”

*wears shorter hemlines*: “so inappropriate! even the Queen doesn’t wear like that!”

*wears longer hemlines*: “she looks matronly and outdated”

*holds William’s hand in public*: “omg have u ever seen the Queen and Prince Philips hold hands?! so unprofessional!”

*doesn’t hold William’s hand in public*: “they’re not in love anymore”

*worked for Party Pieces prior to her marriage*: “it wasn’t a real job! she just waited for the ring! she doesn’t have her own money we know this because we have looked into her bank account(s) before!” ……cough

*doesn’t tell the press about her charitable involvement prior to marrying William*: “she has no interest whatsoever in charity”

*doesn’t comment on political issues*: “she has no voice of her own! so unfeminist!”

People are surprisingly so consistent I’m shocked they haven’t run out of ideas yet. They can keep hating while Catherine chills out with her beautiful loving stable family at KP watching tennis and making pizzas.

Well said!!

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge getting the giggles in the Solomon Islands

I just love this set of gifs for some reason, they’re just too cute.

Anyone who says these two don’t really love each other, refer them to this gif set right here. They aren’t even speaking or really making eye contact but they are definitely communicating and sharing something. I love this.

I see that today is another installment of “Idiotic Mental Gymnastics” by fandom hypocrites

Think of it this way. In the UK it is a legal requirement that the first six in line to the throne have to have their nuptials officially approved through the signing of an Instrument of Consent. Imagine William didn’t bother to get that and didn’t go through any of the other requirements. Now imagine he still insisted on himself and his children being in line to the throne despite the fact it’s clear in the law that they can’t. These people would be furious at William for that shit. They would kick off like you wouldn’t believe. Kate having knees is considered a travesty so their brains might actually explode at a law break like that. But Madeleine flouting the legal requirements in her country is fine? Why? What makes it ok for Madeleine to break the law? It’s almost like it’s not about the substance of someone’s actions and more about whether or not they are William/Kate. But hey, that’s none of my business…

I mean the hilarious thing is that even William getting HM’s approval is a thing they have accused William of not doing 🤦‍♀️😂

“So um, I don’t know if anyone else here knows this, but something that’s really special to me about being back here is that, really early on in my career, when a lot of people didn’t necessarily think that we could fill stadiums together, Gillette Stadium was one of the first places that booked me to fill a stadium. So this was back on the Fearless tour, which was ages ago, I mean, and I was wondering about this crowd tonight, because you’re kind of like, I would call you like a super-crowd. And so I was kind of wondering, and trust me, there are no wrong answers here, but was anyone here in the audience tonight, was anyone at the Fearless show here? Really? Good to see you again! thanks for coming back! Was anyone here tonight at the Speak Now show here? Was anyone who is here tonight at the Red Tour show? Was anyone here tonight at the 1989 Tour show here? And was there anyone here tonight where it’s your first time seeing me play a show? Nice to meet you! This is a super crowd. It’s so exciting to be the people who’d want to come see this show for the first time, it’s also very exciting to me that some of you have come back over and over again to come and hang out with us, that’s so cool you guys. So after the 1989 tour when we played here, I took a bit of a break. Like I’ve kind of been on a very predictable schedule in turns of touring and album stuff, ever since I was 16, and I’m 28 now, which is wild, and so my life would kind of go, you record an album, put out the album go on tour, record the album, put out the album, go on tour, and it kind of went like that over and over again, until I finished the 1989 World tour, and I just felt liek I really needed to stop for a second, think about who I would be as a person if I broke that kind of cycle of just constantly making something and putting it out, like if I stopped to reflect, what kind of life would I have if there wasn’t a spotlight on that life. And I was a little afraid to do that, because I was like, ‘What if they don’t want to hang out with me anymore? They’ll forget about me, they’ll move on, they’ll find someone else in super sparkly dresses,’ and I was just so honored and pleasantly surprised that you guys were so supportive of me taking a break. You guys are so empathetic, you were like, ‘Go be happy, we just want you to be happy,’ and now that I’m back wth reputation, you guys have filled this stadium three times over. I am so grateful! And when I was making this album I was thinking a lot about the concept of our reputation, and how when our reputation seems to match who we are as a person, we don’t think about our reputation as much. We’re not like, ‘Man our reputation is amazing, everyone thinks well of me,’ I don’t think we ever really dwell on that. I think we’re only tormented by the thought of our reputation when we feel like it doesn’t match who we are, and that can be pretty scary, when someone says something about you behind your back, and you’re like, ‘That doesn’t feel accurate!’ and there’s this disconnect that happens. And we hate feeling disconnected. We want to feel connected, and that’s why I love looking out into the crowd and hearing you singing the words, because we all want to feel connected. All we want in this life is connection, and I don’t think that’s bad, we all want love and friendship and connection. And the trick is finding something real and figuring out how to keep it, and that is the delicate part.”

I’m seeing a lot of posts saying that H&M are more in love than W&K all because they kissed at a polo match today, and like I’m struggling to find the correlation? 😂🤔

Hi! I’ve noticed you’re very knowledgeable as far as the royal fandom is concerned, that’s why I decided to turn to you with a question. Some people that clearly dislike Kate, claim Meghan has been working harder and has been doing a better job as a royal already than Kate at the same stage (or even in general, I don’t remember their exact words). As I’m new to the fandom, I can’t really tell. What’s your take on this? Thank you in advance.

Hello anon :) That’s very kind of you. I like to work in facts. Meghan’s been married in for 66 days. In those 66 days she’s done one short tour with 22 engagements in total. In the first 66 days after her marriage Kate did 24 engagements and started a long tour. But it’s important to remember context. Meghan is full time which Kate wasn’t so she should be doing more. But Kate started a major tour during those 66 days which ups her engagement count. So from my perspective they’re pretty much working at the same right and have both had some hiccups. I don’t think that either one significantly outperforms the other at this stage. I think it’s just people taking those numbers and doing what they can to manipulate them to fit a certain narrative.

It sounds stupid to some but many know how important it is to have a loving family, I've been thinking of killing myself every single day because I fucking hate my parents and my life. So yeah to you she's a dumb lazy privileged woman and her "pet charities" are useless but to me who's mentally ill, has to struggle with an eating disorder and has non supportive parents I think I can say that I find her work amazing and wish it got more attention and praise because she really deserves it.

Firstly I’ll just say that I’m so sorry to hear that you’re going through this. I’ve been where you are. I’ve attempted suicide, I’ve been hospitalised. I’m always always here if you need to chat to someone who understands some of what you’ve experienced. I’m so mad that people could make you feel like your experienced have been erased. No one has to think Kate’s mental health work is great if they don’t want to but to make statements about subjective things without considering how other people would feel is not ok to me.

I get really frustrated when people say that she doesn’t know anything about mental health. I’ve talked for a long time about the flaws with the Royal Foundation and Heads Together but Kate is really respected, liked and valued within the sector. If people don’t want to believe me when I say it- which is fine, it doesn’t bother me- then they could at least learn. I’ve done 92 different posts covering Kate’s mental health engagements, many of which contain multiple quotes from people who’ve actually met her and spoke to her about mental health: http://duchessofostergotlands.tumblr.com/tagged/katemh/

Here’s a selection of quotes and anecdotes from service users and the most respected experts in the country:

  • She was twice awarded by the NHS as a “health hero”
  • Anna Freud CEO Peter Fonagy: “She has caused a national shift in terms of acceptability of mental health as a problem that we all need to deal with….”
  • And Fonagy again (FYI he’s one of the most respected psychoanalysts in the world): “particularly proud because I have come to recognise just how knowledgeable she is in relation to what is a complex and difficult issue that so few people genuinely understand.”
  • The Founder of The Art Room: “the Duchess’s continued commitment and endorsement of our work has been an invaluable asset in securing the foundation and laying the path for future growth of The Art Room.”
  • Dr Fiona Pienaar, Director of Clinical Services at Place2Be: “having met Catherine on a couple of occasions, she’s so knowledgeable about mental health…I’ve been in situations where she’s in a small group asking questions and it’s clear that she understands the impact of mental health and early intervention.”
  • Chance UK trustee Ruth Puttick: “She was lovely - very friendly, smiley - and knew her stuff. She was very warm and engaging.”
  • Action on Addiction CEO: “you can tell a lot from people’s questions and she asks really good questions. They’re not routine stuff, they’re questions of someone who wants to learn.”
  • Service Manager for the M-PACT programme Sarah Kendrick: “she is personally and passionately interested. I know her passion in her patronage of both organisations and that speaks volumes.”
  • Chair of The Art Room: “she’s genuinely interested in what we have done. There is a commitment on her part and we feel very privileged to have her as patron.“
  • Professor Tanya Byron said Kate specifically brought up the prefrontal cortex and its role in emotion regulation during a conversation with her

If you find her work personally resonates with you then don’t let people undermine that. It has flaws but it really has changed the conversation- what it intended to do- and Kate spearheaded that. And if it means something to you personally because of what you’ve experienced, no one else has the right to try and make you feel badly about it
