My piece for @octinary’s fic An Excess of Omelettes for @yenbigbang 2022! I’m very grateful to be its illustrator.

People do not offer you things; you take them. People do not give you space; you occupy it. People do not pause for you to speak; you shout over them. These are the rules. These have always been the rules. Anyone who says otherwise is selling something. But if you can’t get what you want by following the rules, maybe it’s time to try something different.
After leaving both Istredd and Geralt in Aedd Gynvael (for different but equally valid reasons), Yennefer refocusses her attention on her quest to cure herself of the infertility that Aretuza subjected her to and make herself whole again. She gets a good tip on a promising lead, but, aggravatingly, the path from here to motherhood seems cursed to cross her exes’. She finds herself in the unenviably position of trying to determine whether to retrieve her heart’s desire at the cost of her pride, or to go without but remain stubbornly inviolate.
Because that’s the only two options, right?

Egg Tree

Rating: T

Pairing: None (Gen Jaskier & Ciri & Geralt & Lambert & Coën & Yennefer & Vesemir)

Word Count: 4.3k

CW: Canonical character death (S2 & TW3)

Summary:  Ciri asks a simple question over breakfast. Jaskier overthinks it and panics. The repercussions of his fumbling answer are perhaps more enduring than he might have hoped.

Four Hours Ago

“Huh,” Ciri said as Jaskier gracelessly oozed himself onto the bench opposite hers at the table and fumbled blindly for cutlery. “Eggs.”

In the few days since his arrival, Jaskier had mastered the art of manoeuvring his mostly still unconscious body from his room to breakfast in Kaer Morhen’s great hall without really opening his eyes. It was, he thought, a clever compromise between his promise to himself many years ago, after his final finals at Oxenfurt, never again to wake up before the sun and the witchers’ insane insistence that breakfast was something that should happen in the early hours of the morning instead of around ten or so as the gods clearly intended. Even worse, Vesemir subscribed to the ‘most important meal of the day’ malarky (perpetrated by malicious early birds against the innocent night owls of the world), which meant that the breakfast served at Kaer Morhen was a hearty and substantial affair whereas lunch was a much leaner offering, more of an afterthought to tide one over to dinner than an actual meal unto itself. So all told, it was either get up to eat with the rooster's first crow or starve ‘til evening. In the face of that impossible choice, Jaskier did the best he could.

He was cutting it pretty close this morning, though—the only other person still at the table when he stumbled in was the Princess Cirilla, or Ciri as he was trying to remember she preferred being called—and so despite his valiant attempts to keep his mind as blissfully numb and as close to sleep as possible, the little pang of worry that he might have been too late and gone hungry had his consciousness close enough to the surface that the quizzical tone in Ciri’s voice could catch it, hook, line and sinker.

Anonymous asked:

I just sent you an anonymous ask asking how to participate...I meant to clarify how do I write for the event! If that makes sense? Sorry if I'm being confusing...

Hi! My apologies for the delayed response!

So, the first step would be to join the Discord! On the Discord, the prompt, the countdown and the link to the AO3 collection are all posted. There is also a Google calendar you can subscribe to with all of the flash fics which are scheduled for the rest of the year!

To write for the challenge, all you have to do is submit a fic to the AO3 collection before the challenge closes. (This is why you need to join the Discord or subscribe to the calendar, so you know when the challenge opens and closes.) When you go to the AO3 collection during an active challenge, there is a link in the top right to post to the collection. Here's a picture of what the button looks like from a past challenge. I highlighted the button in red.

When you click that, you'll get the normal AO3 posting page to fill out with the name of the challenge you are submitting to pre-filled out for you. Don't worry about making your fic anonymous or anything; that's all handled by the collection! Just fill out the AO3 posting page like you normally would and hit post.

And that's it! The fics will stay anonymous for one week so that everyone has time to guess who wrote what. The link to the Google form for guessing is posted in the Discord and on my Tumblr.

I hope you will choose to join us! I'm more than happy to answer any other questions to the best of my ability. :)

Ouroboros

Rating: T

Pairing: Deglan & Vesemir, Vesemir & Lambert

Word Count: 4.3k

CW: Injuries, Trial of the Grasses

There was a particular smell to basements and cellars, any man-made space that had been clawed from the bowels of the earth. It was a dark, damp scent, part earthy and vibrant, part musty and decaying no matter who owned the thing nor how diligently they had it cleaned. It was the scent of a transitional space, a battlefield of sorts, where the millions of tiny creatures that churned and teemed away mindlessly to till the fertile soil met the inexorable vacuum of a sentient species’ necessity and power to control their environment. And, like all battlefields, they attracted death-eaters: mildew and mould, the vulture and crow of the microscopic world.

They always made Vesemir slightly uneasy, an instinctive biological response to the scent trigger that bypassed his conscious mind and went right for his gut. He had heard it said that smell was the sense most closely tied to memory, and Vesemir believed it. One deep breath in and he was back in the cellars of Kaer Morhen lying in a pool of his own bodily fluids amongst the dead, the dying and the ‘lucky’ few who were being painfully reborn, all the while desperately trying to focus all of his nascent super-human senses on the comparatively neutral background of the basement instead. But one severely injured and one unconscious witcher were easy pickings out in the open—he needed to actually sleep, not just meditate, and Kreve only knew if Deglan was even going to wake up—so he wrinkled his nose, bit back the bile rising in the back of his throat, shifted the dead weight of his not-quite-dead-yet mentor on his one good shoulder and descended the worn stairs.
