please do tell us about the joe keery dream. pls.

So in the dream my husband passes away and leaves me a mansion in his will. The mansion is not a creepy mansion, more like a gigantic summer house with a lot of big windows and yellow walls, but it is extremely run down and in need of repairs. For some reason Joe Keery really wants the mansion for his next big renovation project. I do not want to part with the mansion because it's the last memory I have of Stephen, so Joe Keery suggests that we enter into a loveless marriage and become co-owners of the mansion, and in return he'll renovate it for free. Cut to some unspecified point in the future where we are married and it is indeed loveless, although he is very nice and friendly to me. I spend my days walking the corridors of the mansion, holding candles and mourning my husband and crying, but Joe Keery is happily painting walls and sanding the floors and shit. So as long as he's happy I guess?

Anyway, I have that dream at least four or five times a month, and to my credit as a wife I always wake up very upset.

Update on CYOA: I won't be able to update tonight as I have a bad headache and I'm going to lie down, so have another snippet instead.

James Potter: why isn't she in yet? is she alright?

Lily Evans: She's great, she's been in the restaurant all morning doing menu development and she might pop in later depending. I told her she should go home and rest after because we've got a busy week ahead, but she's eager for me to tell her all about Paris in person.

James Potter: can't believe you went to paris btw

Lily Evans: I know, what a disgrace.

James Potter: we fall out for a few days and you go running off to france? FRANCE? who raised you?

Lily Evans: Clearly I had no kind of upbringing.

I’m actually SCREAMING at Euphemia saying she and Monty get it on every Sunday because I used to have older neighbors who let everyone know that Sunday morning from 8-9 am the doors were LOCKED for them to bone 😭😭😭

When you're busy running a culinary empire you need to make sure you schedule regular time for romance!

I've already read the phone conversation 4x since you posted. I know you said you were fiddling with it to make sure you got it just right, and boy YOU DID. It was sooo good.

I was so invested in trying to parse between the lines and figure out what Lily was really thinking; how her imagination had been running wild with thoughts that James was in love with Skylar, and then he just blurts that he doesn't even LIKE her. And omg them exchanging the 'platonic' i love you's at the end, even though they both mean it so much.

Clarifying question - did James actually lie to Remus about the reasons he didn't want Lily to know about Skylar, or did Remus lie on his behalf to cover up the 'undying love' piece of things? If the former, did Remus know it was a lie?

Thank you so much!!

Lol poor Lily. For a minute there she genuinely thought the "I don't like Skylar" revelation was going to be followed up with "I like YOU instead," which of course is not what ended up happening. That conversation was a bit of a rollercoaster ride for her.

RE: Remus, he lied on purpose. The instruction he got from James was "If Lily finds out, tell her A and B" but James didn't explicitly share C aka the real reason. What Remus assumed off the back of that was that James did not want Lily to know that he'd fooled around with Skylar because he still had hope for a romantic relationship with her and therefore didn't want this other girl to be a factor in Lily's thoughts. Which is also true, to be fair.

What a beautifully written chapter. For some reason I hadn't expected James to be so honest with Lily about what had happened, but it was so powerful to read them being so human with one another.

The line "he will not cut her out of his life because she will not deign to live her own within a mold of his creation. That is not the man he is", really got to me. I hadn't even consciously thought about it in this way, but as soon as I read it I realised how much I had needed James to get to this realisation. I think you do such an amazing job of highlighting the underlying toxicity of some of the tropes that go unquestioned in romance stories.

I wondered if this was always how you imagined this conversation happening or whether you had any other versions?

Thank you so much, first of all!

I'm actually so excited for James's chapters from here on in because he's finally going to come to some good realisations and make some much needed changes in his life. Falling out with Lily for a few days was the best thing that could have happened to him, even though he doesn't see it that way. More on that score later but suffice to say I'm really happy with the path I've carved out for him from here on in.

To be totally honest with you, re: the phone conversation, I knew that I wanted James to explain that his deepest shame was re: his general disinterest in Skylar as a person, and I knew that I wanted to end it with a mutual exchange of platonic "I love yous," but other than that my approach was to start and let it flow without any sort of structure to it. It was also originally going to take place in Lily's hotel in France but I ultimately felt that she would feel more open to being open if she was alone and comfortable in her own space.
