Hello everyone! We’re excited to announce applications for a 36-artist 11x8.5″ calendar celebrating Good Omens! This project will be organized by J (@nim-lock), Aiden (@pentakillies), and Nicole.
The Theme
We’ve assigned 12 colors of various hues of the rainbow to the months, which should be featured in your art in a major way. Info is provided in our application form! In spirit with the rainbow theme of the calendar, our proceeds will be donated to a LGBTQIA+ charity! Ship centric illustrations are not mandatory and gen content is very much allowed.
This calendar follows the exact same format as @huemanity2019 run by J & @carrioncrowned last year, if you’re looking for inspiration!
The Content
We’re looking for 12 month, 20 spot, and 4 postcard illustrators. The calendar will contain 13 full page illustrations (12 months and the cover), as well as 20 spot illustrations.
All participants receive a copy of the calendar + postcards.
In science fiction, AIs tend to malfunction due to some technicality of logic, such as that business with the laws of robotics and an AI reaching a dramatic, ironic conclusion.
Content regulation algorithms tell me that sci-fi authors are overly generous in these depictions.
“Why did cop bot arrest that nice elderly woman?”
“It insists she’s the mafia.”
“It thinks she’s in the mafia?”
“No. It thinks she’s an entire crime family. It filled out paperwork for multiple separate arrests after bringing her in.”
I have to comment on this because this is touching on something I see a lot of people (including Tumblr staff and everyone else who uses these kind of deep learning systems willy-nilly like this) don’t quite get: “Deep Reinforcement Learning” AI like these engage with reality in a fundamentally different way from humans. I see some people testing the algorithm and seeing where the “line” is, wondering whether it looks for things like color gradients, skin tone pixels, certain shapes, curves, or what have you. All of these attempts to understand the algorithm fail because there is nothing to understand. There is no line, because there is no logic. You will never be able to pin down the “criteria” the algorithm uses to identify content, because the algorithm does not use logic at all to identify anything, only raw statistical correlations on top of statistical correlations on top of statistical correlations. There is no thought, no analysis, no reasoning. It does all its tasks through sheer unconscious intuition. The neural network is a shambling sleepwalker. It is madness incarnate. It knows nothing of human concepts like reason. It will think granny is the mafia.
This is why a lot of people say AI are so dangerous. Not because they will one day wake up and be conscious and overthrow humanity, but that they (or at least this type of AI) are not and never will be conscious, and yet we’re relying on them to do things that require such human characteristics as logic and any sort of thought process whatsoever. Humans have a really bad tendency to anthropomorphize, and we’d like to think the AI is “making decisions” or “thinking,” but the truth is that what it’s doing is fundamentally different from either of those things. What we see as, say, a field of grass, a neural network may see as a bus stop. Not because there is actually a bus stop there, or that anything in the photo resembles a bus stop according to our understanding, but because the exact right pixels in the photo were shaded in the exact right way so that they just so happened to be statistically correlated with the arbitrary functions it created when it was repeatedly exposed to pictures of bus stops over and over. It doesn’t know what grass is, what a bus stop is, but it sure as hell will say with 99.999% certainty that one is in fact the other, for reasons you can’t understand, and will drive your automated bus off the road and into a ditch because of this undetectable statistical overlap. Because a few pixels were off in just the right way in just the right places and it got really, really confused for a second.
There, I even caught myself using the word “confused” to describe it. That’s not right, because “confused” is a human word. What’s happening with the AI is something we don’t have the language to describe.
Anyway what’s more, this sort of trickery can be mimicked. A human wouldn’t be able to figure it out, but another neural network can easily guess the statistical filters it uses to identify things and figure out how to alter images with some white noise in exactly the right way to make the algorithm think it’s actually something else. It’ll still look like the original image, just with some pixelated artifacts, but the algorithm will see it as something completely different. This is what’s known as a “single pixel attack.” I am fairly confident porn bot creators might end up cracking the content flagging algorithm and start putting up some weirdly pixelated porn anyway, and all of this will be in vain. All because Tumblr staff decided to rely on content moderation via slot machine.
TL;DR bots are illogical because they’re actually unknowable eldritch horrors made of spreadsheets and we don’t know how to stop them or how they got here, send help
“all powerful entity falls head over heels for the first shit ass mcnobody who dared to call them a bitch to their face” is, perhaps not the absolute best trope but it’s definitely up there I’d say
Janet slid one lingering finger down her half-opened blouse, deliberating revealing her female presenting nipples. Deryk groaned, “I’m going to have to review those!”
“Flag me Deryk! Flag me as hard as you can!” cried Janet, as he plunged his real-life human genitals into her sensitive content until his post was no longer visible.
“Well that’s better and more positive” they both gasped, and they spoke transparently and freely about their personal journeys in line with the Community Guidelines until they fell asleep in each others pixelated arms.
‘Queer’ was reclaimed as an umbrella term for people identifying as not-heterosexual and/or not-cisgender in the early 1980s, but being queer is more than just being non-straight/non-cis; it’s a political and ideological statement, a label asserting an identity distinct from gay and/or traditional gender identities.People identifying as queer are typically not cis gays or cis lesbians, but bi, pan, ace, trans, nonbinary, intersex, etc.: we’re the silent/ced letters. We’re the marginalised majority within the LGBTQIA+ community, and‘queer’ is our rallying cry.
And that’s equally pissing off and terrifying terfs and cis LGs.
There’s absolutely no historical or sociolinguistic reason why ‘queer’ should be a worse slur than ‘gay.’ Remember how we had all those campaigns to make people stop using ‘gay’ as a synonym for ‘bad’?
Yet nobody is suggesting we should abolish ‘gay’ as a label. We accept that even though ‘gay’ sometimes is and historically frequently was used in a derogatory manner, mlm individuals have the right to use that word. We have ad campaigns, twitter hashtags, and viral Facebook posts defending ‘gay’ as an identity label and asking people to stop using it as a slur.
Whereas ‘queer’ is treated exactly opposite: a small but vocal group of people within feminist and LGBTQIA+ circles insists that it’s a slur and demands that others to stop using it as a personal, self-chosen identity label.
Why?
Because “queer is a slur” was invented by terfs specifically to exclude trans, nonbinary, and intersex people from feminist and non-heterosexual discourse, and was subsequently adopted by cis gays and cis lesbians to exclude bi/pan and ace people.
It’s classic divide-and-conquer tactics: when our umbrella term is redefined as a slur and we’re harassed into silence for using it, we no longer have a word for what we are allowing us to organise for social/political/economic support; we are denied the opportunity to influence or shape the spaces we inhabit; we can’t challenge existing community power structures; we’re erased from our own history.
Pro tip: when you alter historical evidence to deny a marginalised group empowerment, you’re one of the bad guys.
“Queer is a slur” is used by terfs and cis gays/lesbians to silence the voices of trans/nonbinary/intersex/bi/pan/ace people in society and even within our own communities, to isolate us and shame us for existing.
“Queer is a slur” is saying “I am offended by people who do not conform to traditional gender or sexual identities because they are not sexually available to me or validate my personal identity.”
“Queer is a slur” is defending heteronormativity.
“Queer is a slur” is frankly embarrassing. It’s an admission of ignorance and prejudice. It’s an insidious discriminatory discourse parroted uncritically in support of a divisive us-vs-them mentality targeting the most vulnerable members of the LGBTQIA+ community for lack of courage to confront the white cis straight men who pose an actual danger to us as individuals and as a community.
Tl;dr:
I’m here, I’m queer, and I’m too old for this shit.
I know I keep reblogging posts like this, but it matters to me. “Queer is a slur” is a TERF dogwhistle, and a lot of the younger generation is falling for it. Please pay attention to history and ask questions about who’s behind social media campaigns that undermine the inclusivity of your community.
scyphoza
Queer is an excellent word, especially when your identity doesn’t fit neatly within one little label. Queer is also an explicit rejection of normative expectations sexuality and gender. It’s radical as fuck.
I don’t own the copyright to this, others own the show. All I have is this saaaad little computer and a sketch pad. ^-^ Please don’t sue! I don’t need anymore stress!

WELCOME BACK! For those who logged off, this is what you missed.
1. @staff made a post pretty much saying “Your stuff isn’t getting deleted, just hidden from everyone but you” and “Yeah we know you hate the term “female presenting nipples” but we ain’t gonna stop saying it”
2. If a blog has a pixelated icon that means they got hit by the ban, you cannot view that blog outside the sidebar. You cannot even view their archive. Allegedly if you follow the advice in this post it’ll be fixed but only if it was an accidental flag (aka a real sfw blog)
3. The post Staff made including examples of what was ok to post. It got flagged.
4. Yes, the bots are still here. Yes they are still stealing posts and putting porn links on them. Yes there are still ads with stuff more sexual than they allow in posts. Yes innocent things are still getting flagged.
5. So yes, the site is still here and staff are still morons.
I’ll be joining the protest and logging myself out until (at least) Dec 18th! I’m not going to delete my tumblr blog (yet) since my other social media accounts aren’t organized enough at this point, so I’m not just gonna disappear :) - if you do need to reach me urgently, you can find me on my other social media accounts:
I’m kind of happy what creative heads make out of this upcoming tumblr apocalypse. At least this is a good result. Go, creatives! (and shhhh, show female nipples…)
Well… Can’t say I wasn’t expecting it but I had been almost hopeful…
This was the response to my @tiddie-protest post of my MALE chest, pre and post top surgery - which you can view here. Tumblr flagged it the exact moment I posted it and this was the response I got to my appeal. It has been reviewed and confirmed as “”sensitive”“ and is now only viewable to people who are not using safe mode, but after 17th december it will be hidden from everyone.
This goes directly against Tumblr’s new guidelines. My photo was not of a female chest and was not intended to be sexual and there is no way to interpret it as pornographic in any way!
I was incorrectly hopeful that Tumblr would at least adhere to it’s own guidelines, and this is why they are bullshit -
Firstly - I will argue till the day I die that my nipples, those of A MAN, are not female presenting and never have been, even pre-surgery. This entire focus on “female” rather than just all nipples is both perpetuating the idea that female bodies are inherently pornographic (what century is this??) and invalidating to trans and non-binary and other genderqueer people. This is especially hurtful given how long Tumblr has been a safe space for both women and queer people.
“Female presenting” aside for a moment, for argument’s sake, I have not one but TWO other exceptions under their guidelines - gender confirmation surgery and political speech.
I would even argue, given that before and after photos of surgery can be very helpful and educational to others, that it falls under educational too. Which they also say is allowed. But I guess they mean by “certain types” not trans people?
Given that my post, personally, is also related to my journey as a trans person - one that has been supported by Tumblr and it’s amazing communities so far - it is utterly disrespectful that it be deemed “sensitive” in this manner.
Essentially, proving the sentiment and statement in the below, is utter bollocks. This is not how you strike a balance, this is how you invalidate people and their experiences.
All of the photos being posted for the #tiddieprotest are in fact A PROTEST! Not just a protest against Tumblr’s new guidelines, the way it has been handled and verbalised by tumblr in a inherently misogynistic and transphobic way, but what that represents in a wider context. Tumblr is spearheading another round of shaming of female bodies and invalidating of gender non-conforming people whilst claiming to be working toward a better, more positive Tumblr.
They note Tumblr is “proud to have inspired a generation of artists, writers, creators, curators, and crusaders to redefine our culture and to help empower individuality.” But state “we’ve given serious thought to who we want to be to our community moving forward and have been hard at work laying the foundation for a better Tumblr.” And that doesn’t include most of those in their first paragraph - no thanks body positive women, trans people this isn’t the place for you, but thanks for your previous efforts in empowerment and redefining culture.
We all knew this was going to fuck over trans people the moment we read the ‘female presenting nipples’ phrase, but it’s still infuriating to see it officially confirmed even before tumblr’s TOS changes come into effect.
old enough to remember when smut was called ‘lemons’ but young enough that i had absolutely no business knowing that smut was called ‘lemons’ at the time
I have the zine-planning bug which always hits when I’m wrapping up anything I’m currently organizing
adsjfkasjfdjasfjdasklfjdasklfjaislfjdlaksfs I need a co-mod.
….. Solas ….. (more official screaming later; if this runs the apps will open in March for a delivery date in time for the holidays 2019, unless somebody gets there first. Actually, is anyone planning on running a Solas-centric zine next year, because project running is a hell lot of work that I don’t really HAVE to do. I can just help you with spreadsheets and motivational egg doodles).
