I had a thought, and my brain could be fucking biased because i love the snake, but with all the sides we know, Janus is the one who’s wants for Thomas is for Thomas to just be happy and take care of himself.

Logan cares about Thomas’s work and physical health, friends are… uh, fine he guesses.

Patton just wants Thomas to be happy, but it is clear he struggles with internalized ideals that are not all that great.

Virgil wants Thomas to be safe but he goes a bit overboard and no one is happy.

Roman wants Thomas to achieve his dreams, but he has little idea how the real world functions so he kinda has his head in the clouds.

Remus just wants to be heard, and will bring forth feelings and mental images that are not pleasant to get to the underlying issue.

we don’t know Orange yet

But Janus sure he works in the shadows most of the time, but he knows how society works, knows how Thomas’s works and knows when Thomas is lying to himself about what he wants.

This is a bit rambly because this spurred a lot of thoughts, but:

No, you’re totally right. In Can Lying Be Good? Patton says that Janus acts with the “one intention of self-preservation”. The technical definition of self-preservation is: “the protection of oneself from harm or death, especially regarded as a basic instinct in human beings and animals.” This is exactly what we see Janus doing all the time, especially in SvS and SvS Redux/Putting Others First. And as far as dynamics between him and all the sides go, Janus is a necessary side of the scale of giving too much to others+not giving enough to yourself and giving too little to others+giving too much to yourself. In POF, both Janus and Patton talk about this, that you can take both selfishness and selflessness too far. Leaning too far into selflessness is what brought Thomas to the point he was by POF but we also see that taking too much time for himself by the time of Working Through Intrusive Thoughts can make him a mess - AKA the messy apartment and oversleeping.

I think what it really comes down to is this: for Thomas to be fully functional and not giving too much or taking too much, Janus and every other side needs to work together to balance the scales (and in a way, this almost harkens back to The Mind vs. the Heart where compromise between Patton and Logan, the mind and the heart, is what solved the problem) to make sure that Thomas is, 1. taking time for and listening to himself so he doesn’t find himself at a point of toxic selflessness or selfishness which also can better help keep Remus from manifesting as intrusive thoughts, 2. listen more closely to all of his sides (especially ones who haven’t been listened to very well for quite some time) and work with them to form compromises between them more again, and - going back to a developing theme - 3. the sides need to stay connected and keep communicating

Now, usually I brush off things that are only mentioned once, but when it’s been mentioned or displayed twice or more in the show, I take it into account as having significant meaning, and furthermore, communication and staying connected to each other has always been key for the sides and a core theme of problem solving throughout the entire series. Hell, one of the most memorable moments, arguably, of that communication and problem solving together as a group was Learning New Things About Ourselves. The first time this theme has been mentioned, however, in more of a foreshadowing sense is in the end card of Working Through Intrusive Thoughts where the shot of STAY CONNECTED is shown in bold print on the wall. And in that end card, you can still sense certain tensions - Logan still being upset from the day’s events and the orange side coming through, Virgil and Patton being at odds with each other, and so on.. the usual bickering of Virgil and Roman and Roman and Logan ensuing. The second time is in the Have I Grown? anniversary special where each side drops an answer to Thomas’s question of “what do you think is next for us?” Patton mentions that he thinks things are going to get better as long as they keep communicating. And even in tonight’s song cover of Over the Garden Wall, none of the sides are ever together except for Janus and Patton. It’s like they all just keep drifting farther apart from each other and into themselves - especially Logan at this point, and he’s been spiraling for a long time, trying to suppress any feelings at all cost. Things aren’t looking up yet, and they aren’t looking up because they’re not working together. The episode even before this cover, Thomas mentions this was the first time in a while that they were all in agreement with each other over something - literally just something so small as keeping the stuffed animal/plushies. They just don’t have balance yet, and that’s the cause of 98% of their problems right now.

TLDR: Janus is the necessary balance Thomas needs between his sides and also the self-preservation he has to take into account to function adequately, and in order for Thomas’s problems to be solved, Janus and the other sides have to work together and keep communicating.

^^^^^  This!

Not my absolute fav looking stunning, and singing a solo song, AND Patton and Janus having a normal conversation, listening to each other without shutting each other down.

And Janus showing he cares about Thomas!!!

I loved this so freaking much!

p.s. Thomas, pretty please add this version (conversation and all) to Janus’s playlist!!!!

A letter to the cast and crew of Loki

*updated May 2022 feel free to leave your honest opinions*

There has been a lot of chatter about the Loki series, so this is an attempt to converge all issue, hoping it’ll be seen, as well as explain WHY people are upset. Many of us felt harmed by the series portrayals, and have decided to group together and write. So I’ve written an open letter to the Loki series team. This message will be about the poor representation, trauma erasure, out of character writing, and plot holes. Please reserve opinion for the end, rather than wave us off prematurely. You don’t have to agree with all of this, but it something to think about…

(Written by a non shipper; who is a long term comic fan. Assistance on trauma and media repercussions, from Psych, English, Film, Gender Studies, and Theatre majors. Tysm for your contributions) Est 15-25min read time.

hate it when you go to bed with your silly little imaginary scenarios and you get stuck when it comes to plot like i've been lying here for the past three nights playing the same scene over and over because my brain just won't take it anywhere but also won't stop thinking about it. we've got fully fledged episodes on the back burner here sir, why don't we watch one of them instead please

janus-stanus

The fact that Thomas told the other sides what Janus said about them means that he interviewed Janus first. He wanted to talk to Janus first.

EDIT: okay technically there's also the sandwich joke which has janus responding to something patton's said so either they did janus's in multiple sessions or actually the timeline thing doesn't matter.

...i'm gonna take this anyway.
