It’s only when he turns to find a blade at his own throat that he realizes he has been careless—and far too naïve.

If there’s one good thing to be said of the war, it’s that Gorou would not have appreciated Chinju Forest in peacetime. A sanctuary behind enemy lines, it boasts clusters of Inazuman Cedars that lean together to black out the sky, offering excellent strategic cover; his detachment from Gorgasia II has already retreated to a tight circle of them, setting up camp amidst the tangles of blue-green grass. A ceiling of fog hangs low over the conifers, swallowing the smoke from their campfire.

Their only trouble came in the form of an errant bake-danuki attempting to lead them deeper into the forest. Gorou scared it away, then sent his deputy out with the scout to survey the surrounding area. He doesn’t expect any trouble; the locals tend to avoid Chinju Forest after dark, and the Shogunate has no reason to patrol here.

Thus, he’s surprised when his deputy, a young man named Akagi Ryo who’s skilled in tactics and swordplay, stumbles back to camp with the wind sucked from his lungs and his dark ponytail spilling from its band.

“Captain!” he splutters, his chest heaving from exertion, “Vision Hunt enforcers! A whole company of them!”

Number Three’s bones curl and lock around him, a cage with no key, and he can only watch Kou from between the bars.

After all of his boasting, after pleading with her not to let Teucer see him like this, she’d thought he would be halfway back to Liyue Harbor by now.

Instead, he’s unconscious behind some disconnected old piping and a crop of crabgrass with his hands caked in mud like he clawed himself there in a last-ditch effort to stay out of view. It’s so pathetic that it’s pitiful…

The City of Freedom’s prison lies in the bowels of the Knights of Favonius’s headquarters. Albedo has always known it was here, but he’s never had the occasion to see it for himself until now. He’s heard that the deeper one ventures, the more fearsome the inmates, but this room is a special cell, segregated from the rest, and he’s alone in it. In the age of the aristocracy, this is where political dissidents were held—enemies of the nobility who were themselves of noble birth. Perhaps it serves a similar function these days as well.

He isn’t surprised to have woken up here, lying on his back on a bed that isn’t his and caged behind a row of iron bars. If he’s surprised by anything, it’s that he woke up at all…
