Guys, stop being crap to creators. You aren’t hurting Amazon. You’re stealing from writers.

This is an extremely frustrating trend to watch happen. Indie writers already work so hard, and there's nothing they can do. Amazon doesn't give a damn, they profit either way.

Please download Libby if you want access to free ebooks that were legitimately purchased by a library. Hurting people like this means they can't afford to write books.

fanfic writers, here’s a friendly reminder that you are not less of a writer if you haven’t posted anything in years, you are not less of a writer if your works aren’t as popular as other writers’, you are not less of a writer if some trolls left you rude comments (they either just want your attention or are simply intimidated/threatened by your talent), you are not less of a writer if you write short one-shots instead of a 100k novel-length fanfic, you are not less of a writer if you’re not satisfied with your writing (I promise you it’s so much better than you think, you should be proud of yourself), you are not less of a writer if you’re not comfortable posting any of your works at all.

you are always as valid as any other fellow writers out there.

another reminder: fanfic writing is not a competition, and it’s not a job. don’t put so much pressure on yourself. always remember, the point of writing fanfictions is that we get to have fun, escape reality into the world we create in which we can write anything we want.

it stops being a getaway and a safe place the second we treat writing fanfic as a job or a competition. no, you’re not writing for anybody. you’re writing for you. this world you create is just you and your blorbos. have fun. it’s your getaway.

Everyone always wants to talk about Hook or Pan. Everyone always wants to debate which one is good and which is evil - who we’re supposed to follow and who we aren’t. The Peter Pan mythos has pretty much shrunk down to nothing but Hook and Pan (Hook, SyFy’s Neverland, Pan, OUAT, etc). Occasionally Tinkerbell factors in (Hook, Disney’s Tinkerbell, OUAT, etc). There’s one character, however, that always gets sidelined - which is puzzling since they are the main character of both the play and the book. That character is, of course, Wendy Darling.

Peter Pan is Wendy’s coming of age story. Wendy who decides to run away from home. Wendy who realizes that she must grow up - and that there’s no shame in that. Wendy who sees Peter as deficient and sees Hook as empty and decides that, no, she doesn’t want to be a part of that. Wendy gets the adventure she’s always wanted and she turns away because she realizes that it’s lacking. She’s the only one who truly sees the hollowness of being young forever. Barrie even says “You need not be sorry for her. She was one of the kind that likes to grow up. In the end she grew up of her own free will a day quicker than other girls.”

People always debate on who the hero is. When they learn that Peter could be horrid they assume it has to be Hook. Of course, the answer is that neither of them are the hero. Wendy is the hero of the story. You’re not supposed to be like Peter, who kept every good and bad aspects of being a child and can’t tell right from wrong. You’re not supposed to be Hook, either. He let go of everything childish and loving about him and became bitter and evil. They’re both the extreme ends of the scale. You’re supposed to fall in the middle, to hold onto the things about childhood that make it beautiful - the wonder, the imagination, the innocence - while still growing up and learning morality and responsibility. You’re not supposed to be Hook. You’re not supposed to be Peter Pan.

You’re supposed to be Wendy Darling.

Random writing thought: the best stories are often the ones that only you could have written — but also the ones that you could only write at this one moment.

I couldn't write All the Birds in the Sky from scratch now if I tried. But the me of 2013 couldn't have written The Prodigal Mother either.

When people ask if I'd change anything about a book I've already written, I want to explain to them that I'm not the person who wrote that book any longer, and even if I tried right now I'd write a different one. Everything you make as a writer* is a combination of what you want to say and who you are at the time you are telling that story.

*possibly also as an artist or as a human being

I hate how fandom has become "if you haven't created anything in this very specific time frame after the release of the show/movie, everyone will have moved on"

And call me old fashioned, but that's just not me. I sometimes take ages to create and publish. And I will love a show or movie for such a long time (years, babes, years) that I just can't relate to the fast consumerism that's going on.

Because, let's be real, it can get really lonely in a fandom if most have simply moved on to the next shiny thing. Is what's created less worth, just because it was created outside the hype? Why is it such a taboo for this new fandom generation to love an old or "late" fic or art?

It's so tiring and I'm too old for the 30-seconds-hype-tiktok-shit. Just tired. So, so tired.

Not sure if you're accepting fanfic prompts? Or if not, this can be for discussion!

I wondered how would Jade's, Cat's, Beck's, Robbie's, Andre's, and Sinjin's bird scene would have gone because somehow I was out of imaginary juices. The only one I could envision was Trina's, where she probably did some dramatic scene, audience frowning and cringing. And at the end of it she would demand applause because she knows she's good and probably even passed on first try!

And if they were to do the bird scene in a class setting every week, taking turns to do so, won't eventually the person who went last figured out the answer to passing the scene? I think this would probably be Sinjin/Robbie because I could not imagine them standing up for themselves and say to sikowitz that they are proud of their own work.

Another way I imagined for a character who is unconfident and always needs other's approval that to pass this bird scene, they would have to do it too often to the point sikowitz got sick of it and just pass them?

I think I mentioned in my fic Replay that Jade, much like Trina, would have no problem passing with flying colors. They are both too confident and headstrong to think otherwise. Trina with a dramatic version as you mentioned and Jade with a shade of dark undertones added in. Maybe in the set design, clothes, and script. I would think that Cat would do a straightforward decent job and would get sad when Sikowitz told her it wasn't good enough and then he would pass her because he didn't want her to start crying. Beck seems to be pretty confident in his acting so he would pass, maybe after some questions on why he didn't then quickly figuring that he did a good job anyway and pass. Robbie would definitely just give up and have to try again multiple times. How many? I don't know. But I feel like Sikowitz's would either get tired of him or Robbie would react as Tori had and finally pass. Except I don't think he would have been as creative as she was. I think Andre would be disappointed the first time around and would have to do it maybe one more time before his confidence would kick in and he'd pass. Especially if he threw in a bit of singing to add a spin to it. If anything, Sinjin would either repeat it more than anyone because he wouldn't dispute the outcome, or surprise everyone and get it the first time. Because sometimes he can be a bit forward with what he wants so it's a possibility despite his meek personality.

I do sometimes accept prompts but lately I haven't really wanted to write. I don't mind discussing viewpoints though so I hope that helped!

thinking about middle aged gay love is like. we have a future and we have time

my mother divorced my father when i was 7. it wasn’t because she was gay, though she did discover this later (another reminder that it’s okay to find out who you are at 40, at 50, etc, and also for who you are to change) but because she had thought he was the great love of her life and he turned out to be a shitty person.

my mother married my ma when i was 11. i think they do have a great love. i think they love each other the way you can when you’re middle aged – having seen the world, being able to see each other’s flaws, knowing themselves. they see each other in full, and they love each other and the world for it.

they dance on the street to buskers (very embarrassing when you’re twelve; very cute when you look back on it as an adult). i shit you not – they pass me their purses and dance on the sidewalk, laughing. i thought was something that only happened in movies.

my ma makes my mother eggs every morning because my mother can’t cook for shit. my mother presses my ma’s work blazers for her because my ma still can’t figure out how to work the new iron.

when it was warm, high-school me would wake up on the weekends and wander downstairs to find them sitting in the backyard in the sun, drinking coffee together and splitting the newspaper in a surgical, exact process since they’d worked out who wanted which sections years ago.

my mother is happier than she’s ever been. my ma, too. there is a future out there for every gay person who’s always known they’re gay, like my ma, and for everyone who figures it out later, like my mother. there’s time.

they’re growing old together. i cannot express to you how much they are leading happy lives, loving each other, with a huge family surrounding them. i cannot express to you how much they have this beautiful future that they are living and will live.

i want you to know, if you don’t have any older gays in your life: they’re out there. and they’re living these full, happy lives.

sometimes i look to my moms and i think, i want a life like yours. and looking at them makes me believe i will get it.

Are you guys aware of chimney swifts??

They’re in the same order as hummingbirds and, in some positions, you can see the resemblance

But like… a hummingbird that’s cosplaying as a falcon.

Sleek. Efficient. Aerodynamic. Perfectly optimized.

Also they like to sleep in chimneys, hence the name, and when they perch they become very very flat

They also like to sleep in groups

Anyway 10/10 weird little beast. Love these little flat fuck hummingbird falcons
