after dying god informs you that hell is a myth, and “everyone sins, its ok”. instead the dead are sorted into six “houses of heaven” based on the sins they chose.

We arrived first at the House of Lust. “House” is a misleading term. It was more of a camp, spread over acres and acres of lush forest. There was a white sandy beach (nude, of course) full of copulating couples. There were little cabins sprinkled all along the path, from which orgasmic moans regularly came belting out. Men with six pack abs and women with perky breasts strolled by without even noticing me and God. They only had eyes for each other, tickling and pinching each other with flirtatious giggles.

“What do you think?” God asked as we passed a nineteen-way taking place in a pool of champagne. Little cherubs flitted overhead armed with mops and cleaning supplies, thankfully. “Lust is our most popular sin.” I eyed the supermodel-like figures of a couple passing nearby, and could easily see why. “You can look however you want. Hell, you can be whatever gender you want. No fetish is too taboo, and no desire can be denied here.”

It was quite tempting, but I wasn’t ready to make a permanent decision here. “Let’s see the others,” I told God.

We carried on to Greed. We passed rows and rows of mansions, each more opulent than the next. Some of them were so large that they would have had enough bed rooms to fit my entire hometown. And so many different styles: one second, we were in a beautiful French vineyard in front of a gorgeous chateau with the Alps in the background. The next second, a warm tropical beach with a modern mansion atop breathtaking cliffs. After that, a ski chalet in Colorado with a roaring fire in a hearth large enough to fit an ox. Each one had various Italian sports cars and Rolls Royces parked in front, with the occasional smattering of boats, helicopters, etc.

“Any material desire you ever wanted,” God explained. “Your own world, where you can have everything. You want the Hope Diamond? You can fly to Washington DC in your own solid gold helicopter and buy it from the Smithsonian. Hell, you can just buy the Smithsonian.”

Also tempting, but I decided to keep looking.

Gluttony was next up. Tables and tables of the very finest foods: beautiful steaks cooked medium rare; butter-poached lobster tail; fresh oysters on a half shell; exotic wines in dusty bottles that had been hiding in the cellars of the world’s finest restaurants. Everyone had a glass of champagne in hand and simply lounged on couches and chairs near the tables, eating endlessly. As soon as the inhabitants took a bite, the food just instantly came back. My mouth watered even watching them.

“In every other House, the food is practically sawdust compared to Gluttony,” God explained. “You haven’t truly experienced heaven until you’ve been to Gluttony.”

I shook my head, and we kept moving.

Sloth was as you’d expect. An endless sea of the softest mattresses, stacked with cushions and pillows that made the story of the princess and the pea seem minimalist. Little angels visited each resident, giving them massages that made them all melt into their blankets.

Wrath was… well, a lot like what I’d expect Hell to be like. Fire, brimstone, whips, torture.. you know, the works. Except here, you weren’t the one being tortured. Every enemy you’d ever made in your real life was now under your thumb. “Lots of people choose their fathers,” God explained. “Lots of grudges against parents in general, you know. But you’re not limited to that. Someone beat you out for a big promotion back on Earth? Take your pound of flesh here.”

Then we arrived at Envy. It looked… well, a lot like home.

“Go on in,” God said, gesturing toward the door. I turned the knob and walked in… and found Emily waiting inside. She ran forward, wrapped her arms around my neck, and planted a kiss right on my lips. “Welcome home, honey.”

I looked back toward God. “Oh, don’t be coy,” he said. “You have no secrets from me. We all know that you were in love with your best friend’s wife.” She didn’t seem to hear him at all; she went back into the hall. “We all know that you just settled for your own wife while secretly pining after her. Well, this is your chance to live happily ever after.”

I peered into the kitchen. Emily was baking something, wearing nothing but an apron. Her curly black hair fell softly over her shoulder as she whisked ingredients. She turned back, noticed I was observing her, and an enthusiastic smile spread across her face.

“It’s what you’ve always wanted, isn’t it?” God whispered in my ear.

I wanted to take it. God damn did I want to take it. But I shook my head.

God seemed puzzled. “You need to make a decision,” he told me.

“I haven’t seen Pride yet.”

He scoffed. “No one ever wants Pride, trust me.”

“Well, I want to see it.”

_________________________

Pride was boring. Just a row of workbenches in a bare white room.

“I don’t get it,” I told God.

“Yeah, no one does,” he answered. “That’s why no one ever chooses it. Doesn’t cavorting in Lust sound better than sitting here building little trinkets for the rest of eternity? Wouldn’t you rather gorge yourself in Gluttony? Or spend time with Emily in Envy?”

I considered the options again. “I pick Pride,” I finally told him.

He narrowed his eyes. “What? Look at it!” He gestured around the room again. There wasn’t much to look at. “Why would you choose this for the rest of time?”

“Because you don’t want me to pick it,” I told him. If he was really God, he’d know what a contrarian I can be. And I knew he was hiding something, trying to pretend like Pride didn’t exist. There was something special about it.

God scowled back. “Fine.” He led me over to one of the workbenches. In the center, there was a black space. A blank, empty void that went on forever. “Here’s your universe,” he said. “You’ve got seven days to get started.” He took his seat at the bench next to me and went back to tinkering in his own world. After a long pause, he finally spoke again: “You know, it might be nice for me to actually have some company for once.”

Hoooly shit, what a great ending.

YOURE SO LUCKY TO BE AT YURI ON CONCERT OMG ;w; TELL US ALL ABT IT WHEN ITS OVER????

Avatar

As I mentioned, IT WAS AMAZING. I mean, of course we knew it would be, but I didn’t quite expect it to be THIS good??

They sang SO many songs, though there were a couple I’d have traded for others, like I would’ve rather heard Partizan Hope instead of Intoxicated but FINE.

The stage was very nicely arranged with the full Ensemble Fove orchestra, and these people were DAMN good at their jobs. Even the conductor–composer Matsushiba-san–played the piano for several pieces and was just on fire.

Also on fire: the stage, LITERALLY. During Otabek’s FS performance, they went FULL THROTTLE METAL and included smoke and flames as if the doom-and-gloom choir singing wasn’t intimidating enough. I’m 500% Yuri Plisetsky stage directed that performance.

SO many points were so moving, too. Kudou-san sang Stammi Vicino as one of the very first songs, and god, he’s so amazing a singer, just FILLED that room with his voice and belted out every note high and low pitch-perfect. It literally brought me to tears, as that’s my favorite song in the series.

The only thing that topped it was his performance with Matsubara-san singing Duetto in gorgeous outfits as the actual exhibition performance streamed on video screens behind them.

These people were amazing.

Another thing that moved me to tears: “At the Airport”.

This is already a movie track, though not very long. But as with the other songs, while the orchestra performed the music, the video screens streamed relevant scenes.

Let me tell you: if you’ve never watched the airport reunion with no audio while playing “At the Airport” in your music player of choice? DO IT NOW. Do it, and just look at their body language, the way they look at one another, the expressions on their faces. It’s phenomenal how in love they are, and so, so obvious in that one scene when distractions like voices are stripped away and there’s nothing but that soft soundtrack to guide the scene.

The other performers were all amazing. One fun thing: Linus Norda was there to sing his song, Theme of King JJ, which he did a GREAT job with, it was SUPER fun and the audience was totally into it. However, that wasn’t the only song he sang tonight! He also sang two others, one of which I KNOW he didn’t sing in the series, and another I’m pretty sure he didn’t: Shall We Skate (Phichit’s SP) and Serenade for Two (Michele’s FS). If you’re concerned he didn’t do either of these justice, FRET NOT. He did so well with them both, I honestly wasn’t sure if he was or wasn’t the original singer. He had such fun, and it showed in his singing. A great job with the one he had been “assigned” originally as well as with the two he picked up!

One of my favorite parts of the show, and why I desperately hope there’s SOME release of the content, is how much BRAND NEW MUSIC there was. Almost EVERY SINGLE SONG had a new verse or a new intro or a solo of some sort that just made it an even MORE amazing song than before. Ai ni Tsuite: EROS in particular was my FAVORITE new riff, as the guitarist (world-famous flamenco guitarist Oki Jin, who’s won national awards IN SPAIN, BEATING OUT NATIVE SPANIARDS) did an A-FUCKING-MAZING new riff to open the song that had our jaws dropping. He tore that guitar UP and I would have loved to have seen that as part of Yuuri’s SP performance *_____*

Here are some pics of the concert as it was happening (source):

[the Eros performance; you can see Oki-san on the guitar in the bottom right]

[Matt Cab singing “Still Alive”]

[Aisha singing “A Tales of Sleeping Prince”]

[Ai ni tsuite ~ AGAPE being sung by an amazing boy soprano whose name I’ve forgotten (the same young man who sang the song for the show–he was ABSOLUTELY FLAWLESS AND SO PRISTINE AND PURE IN THAT VOICE)]

Cannot overstate how great this show was. I so hope others can see it too some day! Matsushiba-san was VERY keen on doing it again and excited to learn that there were lots of foreigners in the audience as well (which was really weird to hear mentioned, since he outright asked people in the audience to shout out where they were from, very difficult in a room of 13,000; makes me wonder if they aren’t planning something overseas…).

He also was sure to mention that he and Ensemble Fove were hard at work on composing and rehearsing the music for the YOI MOVIE, so expect the same amazing level of music for the movie from people who already love and understand the series!

If there are any other questions, I’m happy to field them!

Lilia Branovskaya a tribute to Maya Plisetskaya ?

Although this was never mentioned anywhere, ever since Lilia Baranovskaya was introduced in YOI, I couldn’t help but to think that she could be a possible tribute to Maya Baranovskaya.

If you haven’t heard Maya Plisetskaya, you should definitely check her out. She was a legendary   Bolshoy Theatre Ballerina, who unfortunately passed away at the age of 89 last year.  At age 18, she joined the Bolshoi Ballet, soon becoming a leading soloist, and was later proclaimed Prima Ballerina Assoluta by the Soviet government.

Plisetskaya ended her career as a ballet dancer in 1990, being at the age of 65, but continued to dance from time to time at some evenings until 80.

Lilia Baranovskaya is the former prima ballerina of the Bolshoi Ballet and is implied to be quite famous.

Either way, I don’t think it’s a coincidence, and we can all agree that YOI made a beautiful gesture to Maya Plisetskaya.

Also, Plisetskaya is the feminine diminutive of Plisetsky.

This is one of the many reasons I love Yoi so much, for giving tribute to many amazing athletes :)

Yuri on Ice interview translation - Animage 2017/01 (p14-17)

I bring you a new and long seiyuu interview! It’s 3 different, separate interviews with Toshiyuki Toyonaga (Yuuri), Junichi Suwabe (Victor) and Kouki Uchiyama (Yurio), published on the Jan. 2017 issue of Animage (not really on the magazine but in an insert all dedicated to YOI). While we have seen lots of interviews with Toyonaga and Uchiyama so far, for the first time we get to read about Suwabe’s opinion too, and it’s really interesting! Not to mention the interviews cover up to episode 10 included, which is more material than previous ones.

Also, in this interview there is proof that Yuuri bought both rings and not just one in episode 10 (I’m mentioning it because it’s a personal pet peeve, as I disagree with the widespread theory of Yuuri only buying one). Now you have official material to prove your point, lol.

It’s kind of sad that this will be the last “translation posted before a new ep”. I wanted to post it earlier but it’s so long it took me ages to finish it. You can use it to distract yourself while you wait for episode 12. Enjoy!

Yuri on Ice BD booklet translation (with Mitsurou Kubo interview) - Volume 1

The BD/DVDs were available in stores today, 3 days earlier than the official release, so of course I went to Animate to get my copy even if this meant waiting in line for almost 30 minutes, hah. I’m sure screencaps are being posted all over the net already, but I haven’t watched the BD yet because, guess what, I was translating the booklet.

The booklet has 3 parts: 1) Character introduction for Yuuri and Victor, which is mostly information we know already except for a few extra info (for example, I don’t think it was ever mentioned so far that Victor is fluent in French?). 2) “Topics”, in other words random curiosities. This is the same as above, information we already know plus extra tidbits. 3) Interview with Mitsurou Kubo, from which among other things you can understand that she is probably having fun reading all kinds of fan theories found on the web, lol (though mostly the Japanese ones I think).

Have fun reading, while I finally go watch my BD…

P.S.: I was actually meant to post the translation of an interview with Georgi Popovich’s seiyuu Wataru Hatano, but after being obscured by Victor’s birthday he also managed to be obscured by the early release of the BD… Poor Georgi. I will post that tomorrow or on Thursday possibly.

He is a Kyushu boy who is actually very competitive. The source of all his problems is his lack of confidence, but he has made up for it by training hard and is currently the ace of Japanese male figure skating. Since he tends to gain weight easily, he has decided that he will only eat katsudon (900kcal), his favorite food, when he wins a tournament. His romantic history is top secret.

Christmas is celebrated all over the world as the birthday of Victor Nikiforov.

YURI!!!’s TOPIC

TOPIC 1: Poodle Looking at the pictures of Victor and Makkachin, Yuuri also decided to get a poodle and named him “Victor”. His nickname was Vicchan. Now both his smartphone case and background picture feature poodles. His dog Victor lived out his natural life span when Yuuri was at the GPF, but Makkachin came to Hasetsu together with Victor! Yuuri’s first thought when he sees Makkachin is “so huge!”. Indeed, even though their faces are identical, Victor was a toy poodle, and Makkachin is a standard poodle. The size is completely different.

TOPIC 2: Blade The blades each athlete uses are different depending on their personalities. Yuuri’s blades are a standard type. Yurio’s are a new lighter model said to make it easier to perform jumps. If you look closely, the shape of the parts under the sole that support the blade is different. Victor’s blades are golden. Even the sound he makes when he glides the ice is beautiful. The personality of each athlete can also be seen in the color of the edge case used to cover the blades when the skating shoes are not used.

TOPIC 3: Hasetsu City A castle town by the sea in Kyushu. …Or so it’s called, but the castle is actually fake and has a ninja house inside. It’s famous for its marine products, however due to the decreasing population it’s somewhat of a lonely place. The monument in front of the station that Yurio found gross portrays the local “yuru-chara” (mascot characters), a squid and a sea urchin, which are not very popular among the locals either. The popular menus of Yuuri’s house, daytime onsen “Yutopia Katsuki”, are squid sashimi and katsudon. The sweet potato shochu “Makai e no Izanai” was also appreciated by Victor.

TOPIC 4: Russian yankee Yurio’s fashion style is Russian but it also corresponds to the style of Japanese punks (“yankees”). Or the style of old ladies in Kansai. His favorite design is leopard print and tigers are his favorite animal (he owns a cat). His meticulous aesthetic sense, with shoes, clothes, edge case, suitcase and even disguise mask all in the same style, makes his fans a little uneasy. However, his most hardcore fans “Yuri’s Angels” consider him a fashion leader.

TOPIC 5: Ice Castle Hasetsu Skate rink at the base of Hasetsu Castle, one of the few in Kyushu that are open throughout the year. It’s the place where Yuuri started skating and also his current training base. Thanks to his friends, the Nishigoori family, working as staff, he is allowed to use the rink to train even outside normal business hours, which is very helpful. It’s rare for a Japanese rink to have light coming in through a window, and to Yuuri this is one of the most beautiful places in the world. The names of the mascot characters are Ikahime and Ikadono.

Original plan / “name” (manga storyboard) / character plan Mitsurou Kubo interview

A story where Yuuri seizes things with his own hands.

The first time I met director Yamamoto, 2 years ago, she told me that she wanted to create an anime about the deep bond between a coach and an athlete. How to concretely shape the story is something that we decided after carrying out extensive research on figure skating and studying it. The director taught me a lot and I also checked out stuff on my own, while at the same time keeping in mind the feelings of an amateur, as it’s important to understand what would catch the heart of someone who doesn’t know anything about figure skating and has their first approach to it through an anime.

-The feelings of the creators emerge in their work-

The director doesn’t follow single athletes, she really watches everything, ice dance, single, pair, and she has respect for everyone, both past athletes, current athletes and even young ones. For example, she always calls all athletes with the “-san” suffix (common Japanese honorific), including the junior skaters. And not only in front of them, she does it when she speaks with me too. I think it’s the small things like this that emerge in your work. I believe that it’s important to act freely within our creation, while treasuring the feelings of respect and support for the athletes and without feeling superior. However, you don’t really feel like enlivening the story with someone getting hurt. At least within the anime, you want everyone to stay safe from injuries. Since in real life it actually happens often…… But then, when the series started airing, I saw people worried that someone might get injured or die, and I realized that maybe it’s actually that kind of things that people look for in fiction. If it were a long serialization it could have been possible to accurately portray someone going through that kind of hardship, but this time we only had one cour. That is why we chose to limit the worries of the protagonist Yuuri Katsuki to his talent and his psychological weakness, instead of having the people around him put a lot of pressure on him or having someone that disapproves of his choices. We wanted to show someone who has trouble progressing while being surrounded by kind people who don’t step too much into his territory, thus diminishing the enemies. I was careful because I didn’t want to make a story where he would put the blame on someone. I was very happy when, after the show aired, I saw people comment that they can watch it over and over because they don’t hate any characters and so they don’t feel stressed.

-Having viewers get accustomed to the characters-

Indeed, what’s important is that characters are alive within this work. The first thing I thought when I found myself creating a story about sport is that if a saw a person completely unrelated to me that skates, no matter how well they skate I probably would not feel them “close”. If a person that isn’t really interested in real world figure skating watches it they would just think “oh, some skilled guy is skating”, like watching from a distance. I realized that if the viewers don’t become familiar with the characters they will never feel personally involved watching them in a tournament. That’s why we didn’t jump to the matches right away but we spent 3 episodes getting the viewers accustomed to the characters as much as possible. If you can get familiar with the characters and personally experience how it feels when an athlete you really like is participating in a tournament, then you can finally be engrossed in the world of the series. I hope this mechanism works well. I really did my best, because I’m sure that the fiction will not strike a chord in the viewers’ hearts if we don’t create the necessary premises first.

-Is it the same for Katsuki-kun?-

Based on my experience working with shounen magazines, Yurio wouldn’t make for a good protagonist. He shines the most as a rival, but if you use him as a protagonist he is not going to push the story forward, he would probably send it more in a tragic direction. Yuuri Katsuki really pushes the story forward, he’s helped me more than once. Yuuri is indeed the type that doesn’t have confidence, but when you see the interviews of lots of athletes from the real world, who have developed through many battles, you see what a strong personality they have. When you see a skater who is very passionate about training say “I don’t really listen to what my coach says”, automatically you think that maybe Katsuki-kun too doesn’t really listen to his coach when he’s focused. When a kind and sensitive-looking skater says that the judges should “watch me more” in a very blunt way you think that maybe Katsuki-kun too, deep down, has that kind of thoughts about the judges. I like it when real athletes say things that I would never come up with. Still, I use what I hear as a reference when deciding how the characters would behave, but the decision is ultimately based on the personalities that I created for them. Also, I didn’t want to make it so that Victor as a coach would give and teach everything to Yuuri. The driving force of this story is how Yuuri Katsuki seizes things with his own hands. When you have a coach that twists you around his finger you necessarily have to change yourself or to change something to understand how to move forward….

-The difference between manga and animation-

It’s the first time that I’m involved with animation, and first of all, in manga you cannot show music and movements together. Obviously. Recently I’m realizing how much manga actually rely on the imagination of the readers. If you draw someone saying “what an amazing performance!” and then spend a few frames to draw the pose in an impressive way the reader might actually be convinced that they’re indeed doing an “amazing performance”. I draw my manga adding details until I’m satisfied and consider them “completed”, but now I think that might not be true. I feel that this work, that was born from the joint effort of animators, voice actors, musicians and many other people, is now standing on its own. I reckon that there are people who think “since real life skaters are so wonderful, there must be something deep in the world of the anime too”, and so they imagine new things. Among many different languages, sexualities and discussions, there are many people who are bringing out their creative ideas, and I guess to every one of them this work is becoming something special. When I take a look at people’s impressions there are so many things that surprise me, for example how different people will interpret something in completely different ways, and how some people look for deep meanings I didn’t even think about. I have come to find it really captivating that these characters have left my hands and are existing somewhere else. When I see things like that I really feel like I would never get tired to hear the thoughts of people who say they love this work. And at the same time, the feeling inside me that makes me not want to lose to anyone has also become stronger. I didn’t create these characters alone with my own power of course, but more then ever I feel that I am responsible for making these anime characters grow stronger than anyone else! Like Victor, I found motivation.

Yuri on Ice as Seinen, Or, Why I Love the Skating Anime

With the anticipated and dreaded episode 12 nearly upon us, I figure it’s time to make this post. I’ve been wanting to make it for a while : write something about why I love this thing so much, about the things it does.

I’ve always found it pretty jarring to see comparisons between Yuri on Ice and other sports anime like Haikyuu or Free, and that’s mostly because in my head, YoI comes from a very different place than most other sports series. Sports anime, for the most part, belongs in the shounen genre and comes with all the genre codifiers : passion, teamwork, diligence, friendship, the exhilaration of having dreams and realizing that you might be able to reach them for the first time, the exuberance and heady rushes and sweat and tears and uncertainties of shining youth. How much any given series exemplify this depends on the series. Some focus more on the human drama. Some focus more on the heartpounding rush of the competition. Still, most of the time, those ideas are what sports anime run on.

Yuri on Ice’s central concerns, on the other hand, are pretty seinen.

/post/154717055673 sry i don't speak a word of italian but you said it was a male and female singer, and i read elsewhere that the grammatical gender of certain words in the song indicated the guy was singing about another guy (in the solo ver) so i'm just wondering if that's true

According to the people I’ve talked to and this post I’ve read, yes, the song is using pronouns that refer to one male singing to another male. Why they would choose a female singer in this case, your guess is as good as mine, but I’m assuming that it’s just to have a more defined difference in the voices. Like, you specifically have an upper and lower range, as a musical choice. I personally think the duet sounds beautiful though so I have no complaints. :)

I’ve actually been thinking about this, and the thing that always pops into my head is to wonder whether they just didn’t have enough money to afford to use the song that they wanted / thought it might be weird for the skaters if they did.

Some context: for me, two of the most memorable skating programs that I have ever watched - the ones that really stuck with me - were skated to a song which, like Stammi Vicino, (1) is sung in Italian, (2) is about leaving for new beginnings with your lover, and (3) comes in two arrangements - one for a solo male voice and one a duet.  It’s likewise been skated by a single skater and by an ice dancing pair, with the solo skater (Sarah Hughes at 1999 Hershey’s Figure Skating) using it in competition and the the pair using it as their gala performance, specifically in the year that they took bronze at the Olympics.  I am speaking, of course, of Andrea Boccelli’s Con Te Partiro, which literally translates as I Will Go With You but has been sung in English as Time to Say Goodbye.  The duet singer is Sarah Brightman, it’s gorgeous, you should listen to it.  Unfortunately due to copyright issues, the linked version is some random singer and it’s kinda weird sounding.  But if you hear Boccelli do it, it’s gorgeous.  *_______*

Anyway, Kubo-sensei is old enough that she might remember these performances as well, so I wonder a bit if they didn’t stick with her, too.  Just a thought, anyways.

the stammi vicino duet

Omg the composition of this piece!!

It starts with the piano solo - which has always been Yuuri’s instrumental representation.  This is also the sequence which Yuuri skates alone.  Then strings sneak in.  And when the soprano joins, so does the chamber orchestra - which has always been Victor’s instrumental representation.   So it’s not surprising that this is when Victor joins Yuuri.

Not only that, the composers cut out the grandiose of the original (though who’s to say this wasn’t the original) song.  Gone are the full symphonies: the winds, the brass, the harp.  They’ve replaced it all with the piano, an instrument that traditionally struggles to be heard on stage.  The strings take up some of the lost sections, filling in the sound and blending with the piano.  The sound of a piano and small string ensemble will never be as awe-inspiring as a full symphony, but there is something powerful about the quietude in the piano and strings.  It’s beautiful, majestic, and private - a sound that suits Victor and Yuuri’s love.

It’s not just that Yuri and Victor pair skate on the ice.  It’s not just adding a soprano to the tenor and turning the opening song into a duet.  It’s not even the lyrics (”stay close to me and never leave me”).  Yuuri and Victor’s love is written into the very instrumentation of this piece, into every note and sound and beat.

And when the piano and strings play their soli, crescendo-ing together into this triumphant swell.  … I’m cry.  I’ve broken.  This song killed me.

Yuuri is self-sabotaging and love doesn’t magically cure your anxiety

Ok, I need to address the major fandom freakouts I’ve witnessed about episode 11. Basically, Kubo knows how to write anxiety, and specifically self-esteem related anxiety, extremely well. Frustratingly, painfully well. Still this

This is what we call narrative tension. Ending abruptly on this ambiguous line is meant to be a cliffhanger and make us suffer because we only have one episode left and we can’t go into the last episode with no narrative tension (say, Yuuri placing first and being super lovey-dovey with Victor) or else there would be no stakes. It doesn’t mean the series will end badly.

1. Yuuri messed up Eros because he wasn’t focused on love

As soon as Yuuri talked about changing the jumps and compared his program to JJ, I knew he would mess up. Yuuri’s performances rely on his mental state a lot, Eros in particular always has him adopting a very particular persona to pull through. We had none of that in episode 11. Yuuri is too focused on landing the quadruple flip and forgets to focus on love, and he ends up failing the jump but also losing presentation points. It’s why his score is lower than usual for a performance he had perfected before.

I also feel that the thing about Eros is that Yuuri’s original motivation is gone. Eros is about enticing and seducing a target and so far Yuuri’s focused all of that on Victor. Yuuri doesn’t need to seduce Victor anymore and he’s not trying to do that at all, so the message he’s trying to convey with Eros is not working anymore. He aimed too hight because of anxiety instead of focusing on delivering the same sort of perfect Eros performance we’ve seen from him before. In a way though, you could say he reached the limit of what he can do with Eros, but not with Yuri on Ice, which is why I believe he will ace his Free skate with a perfect Yuri on Ice performance next episode, thus surpassing himself and completing his self-improvement journey.

2. Victor and Yuri are not breaking up, but they are on completely different wavelengths when it comes to the relationship

Let’s get this one out of the way since it seems to be the major source of panic. “Let’s end this” is ambiguous, just so we can suffer the most. Yuuri can mean the coach-skater relationship, he can mean the romantic relationship, he can mean both. I would hope he means the first. If we follow through his thought process along the season however…he probably means both. In the sense that, he probably feels like ending the coach-skater relationship, as he intends to do, will end any sort of relationship he has left with Victor. So what he’s saying is that he wants to retire and let Victor go as a coach, but what he’s feeling probably goes beyond that, even if he doesn’t actually break up with Victor.

This isn’t new information. Yuuri has been unsure about his future in skating since episode 1. He’s been doubting his entire relationship with Victor and wether he will stay or not since episode 2. The types of looks we’ve seen Yuuri sending Victor this episode are not new.

Yuuri has always believed, as he expressed back in episode 4, that his time with Victor was a limited blessing. He believes that Victor will inevitably go back to Russia and skating like everybody around them says he should do. Yes, even after Victor kissed him on international television, even after Victor announced that they were engaged to be married, you can bet Yuuri still believes that Victor’s love is purely conditional and dependent on Yuuri’s skating performances and that this relationship is only temporary. Because Yuuri’s type of anxiety is that type that makes him hear “We’ll get married after he wins gold at the Grand Prix.” as “We’ll get married only if he wins gold at the Grand Prix and thus deserves it.”

There’s been moments he has believed otherwise, of course. The airport scene I’m sure calmed him down, most of episode 10 as well, he probably believed for a moment that maybe this was it, maybe it was real and he deserved this lasting happiness. But then he’s at the Grand Prix and messed up his Eros performance and watched Victor appreciate other skaters doing better than him, so he’s back to questioning everything that’s ever come to pass between him and Victor because right now Yuuri is very set on the “I’m not good enough for him and am just holding him back.” mindset.

Victor meanwhile? Having the time of his life! I mean I should hope nobody gets so caught up in Yuuri’s POV that we start to doubt Victor’s feelings when we had an entire episode narrated by him about said feelings. Victor was leading a lonely and empty existence where he felt like he couldn’t rely on anyone and like he was prisioner to his carreer. Until Yuuri came along, and now he’s finally enjoying life, he’s in love, he’s at peace, he’s free to see fellow skaters as friends and not just rivals. The tiny amount of Victor POV in this episode only reinforces this.

Victor is having a grand time and he’s so invested in Yuuri, so focused, so in love, so ready to marry him on the spot, which is why he doesn’t realize that Yuuri’s anxiety is not exclusively over skating performance anymore but over their relationship as well.

That said, they definitely love each other and they both want to stay together. So this is good. I mentioned this before, they desperately need to talk and let out all their feelings towards each other. This will make things better in the long run. Remember, Yuuri is making assumptions on what Victor actually wants. It’s time Victor tells him exactly what that is, because no matter what it will include staying with Yuuri. They need to discuss the future, together.

The rings were focused on once again in this episode and both characters are still wearing them in the preview for the next one. Add to that that Yuuri says he will “skate both his and Victor’s love”.

They won’t break up.

3. Yuuri is not out of character nor is he experiencing character regression

Yuuri has an anxiety disorder. I’ve discussed this before. Yes Yuuri has progressed very far, yes Yuuri has gained more self-confidence. That doesn’t make the anxiety go away. Victor’s love doesn’t make the anxiety go away. It flaring up at the Grand Prix, when he’s at the peak of pressure? Completely understandable. Especially when you consider his anxiety in particular is connected to his self-esteem and how you see the way his self-esteem works. Basically, Yuuri measures his self worth through his achievements and recently in his life, particularly through Victor. Remember, Yuuri believes Victor’s main interest in Yuuri comes from Yuuri’s skating. So messing up Eros, even if not much? Was a huge blow. Watching Victor happily watch and appreciate other skaters who are doing better than Yuuri? An even bigger one.

Yuuri still doesn’t know what really happened between him and Victor at the banquet last year. He doesn’t know any of the things Victor monologued about to us, the audience. For Yuuri, the only thing keeping Victor around is whatever special spark he saw in his skating in that video. So Yuuri feels he’s losing that spark since he’s underperforming, he feels like he’s not good enough anymore to keep Victor around. Victor didn’t say anything to Yuuri after his short program and then spent the rest of his time looking and even complimenting other skaters. In Yuuri’s head, Victor is disappointed with him.

Thus Yuuri also feels, most likely, that he’s hurting Victor and taking advantage of him. He feels guilty for keeping Victor to himself all these months. If Victor remains his coach he will be unhappy, that’s what Yuuri believes. Hell, he probably thinks he’s been forcing himself on Victor. He asked Victor to stay over the Hot Springs on Ice, he asks again later that he stays until he retires, he gives him the ring first, all of this is probably weighting down on him in the shape of terrible guilt because he loves Victor so much and he wants Victor to be happy.

So, there’s this panic response your brain has to extreme levels of anxiety, which is self-sabotage. Self-sabotage gives you the illusion of being more in control of the situation. Yuuri feels like the relationship with Victor, be it coach-skate or romantic, is doomed to fail, so he decides to end it, to free Victor himself before Victor loses interest and leaves on his own. Things still fall apart but he controls how they fall apart, which is less stressful for his anxiety muddled mind. That, and he gets rid of his crippling guilt over ‘holding Victor back’.

Everything about Yuuri’s actions and thoughts in this episode make sense. I want Yuuri to come out of this not letting anxiety and his insecurities conquer him. I want him to learn how to love, how to be openly vulnerable, in spite of his anxiety.

4. EVERYTHING WILL BE ALRIGHT

So way back before episode 7 graced us all with that kiss and canon status, I believed that we would only achieve said canon status in episode 12 and the way I thought it would happen would be through Victor skating “Stay Close to Me” to Yuuri, thus confessing his feelings. Then episode 7 happened and I was a bit confused about the scene. Because the scene is totally happening, we have the duet version of the song in the soundtrack, the opening scene in the anime is clearly half a flashforward to that scene, so I knew it would still happen but I didn’t know how they would make it emotionally significant. Now, I think it might be the ultimate reassurance Victor can offer Yuuri about his feelings.

Reassurance, that’s what.

Victor can’t make Yuuri’s anxiety go away, that’s not how it works. But this series is about love. Love wins, love makes Yuuri stronger. Anxiety may not magically disappear but it can be fought against, it can be overcome. So everything will be alright, they will be alright, Yuuri will be alright.

Speaking of music and how it works as meta-narrative in this series, if you still feel unsure, go listen to the Yuri on Ice track. Listen to it, think about how it mirrors the entire story of Yuuri over the course of the series, and note how it ends in a joyful harmony between the piano and the violin.
