Bright Lights, Big City

The Strand-Reyes household always looked forward to the two weeks before Christmas. TK and Carlos had kept with tradition even in their newest positions as paramedic and detective and saved vacation for the week of Christmas and New Years. This year they were leaving the day after Christmas really early in the morning to go to NYC to visit Gwyn. It was the first time the family was travelling to NYC and there was a lot of excitement and a lot of anxiety. Carlos had never flown before and he was a little anxious about it if he were being honest. TK assured him it would be fine, but Carlos wasn’t sure he believed him. 

Christmas Day was eventful as always. Gabriel, Andrea, and Owen came over for breakfast and to watch the kids open presents. Later in the afternoon, the rest of the crew and Carlos’s partner came over for dinner and to play with the kids. Carlos and TK took the time the kids were occupied with their aunts and uncles to finish the last minute packing. “TK are you sure about this? Ryder hasn’t been feeling the best, airports are going to be so crowded, it’s snowing in NYC, and what if the flights are delayed or….”

Hello! Many apologies for being away for so long - I’ve been a bit ill and low on energy to write, read or post. I had this written before I actually fell ill, so I’m so glad I can post it now. I hope you all enjoy it. It’s by far the longest piece I’ve written so far. Please let me know what you think :)

This was requested by @queseraone. I’ve kinda set it based on the comment in the season 5 premiere about Jay hitting a fellow cop for harassing Erin (because c'mon; how hot is that?!).

It started innocently, or at least, that was what Erin made herself believe. She had no idea who he was when she met him at the crime scene Hank had called her out to in the middle of the night, dragging her away from her warm bed and even warmer boyfriend. Though all things considered, she couldn’t complain when she wasn’t the poor woman lying dead in her kitchen surrounded by three friends.

“Gruesome, huh?” Officer Malley, according to the name tag on his vest, commented as he led her through the house. He had looked familiar enough; tall, muscular, blonde, green eyes, but she hadn’t been able to place him, and if she really thought about it, she knew she wouldn’t. There were too many officers in the Chicago Police Department, and she barely knew the ones who worked out of the 21st let alone the rest of the districts.

“Not the worst I’ve seen,” Erin sighed, taking in the modestly sized room and the multiple pools of blood on the tiled floor.

“Really?” the officer asked in surprise, and she shifted slightly to look at him questioningly when intrigue took over his features. “What’s the wors-?”

Erin knew what the question was going to be when Hank cut him off by calling for her, but she merely offered a small, apologetic smile before following her boss’ voice. By the time they had returned to the kitchen, Malley was gone, and she hadn’t spared him another thought.

Aftermath Chapter 111: The Conclusion

It’s hard to believe that almost three years ago I met a beautiful soul in this fandom who would change part of me forever. Without @califleurnia support and firm push I never would have tried my hand at writing. I had no idea it would have such a huge impact on my life. I will be forever indebted to you beautiful lady.

Along the way I’ve met more dear friends who have helped shape my voice and create with me. Without them and the dozens of you who offer your encouragement and feedback regularly I never would have had the courage to not only write fanfic but also publish my first original work or start my first novel.

You inspire me.

You lift me up on the dark days.

This fandom could often be a difficult space to share feelings and opinions openly, especially if they differ from popular opinion, but there is one thing I will always be proud of: THERE IS NO SPACE MORE WELCOMING AND SUPPORTIVE OF WRITERS THAN THIS FANDOM. The sense of community amongst those who write and read fanfic is incredible. I have never experienced pettiness or competition from another writer, only encouragement and collaboration. And our readers know how to lift someone up like nothing I’ve seen. Not once have I experienced anything but love from those who read my stories. So thank you, to each and every one of you who has taken the time to read, review, like, make a request or dissect a scene with me. And mostly thank you for sticking around on this incredible and very lengthy journey that has been Aftermath.

On December 24th 2015 I clicked “publish chapter” for the very first time and launched this story. It’s been a labour of pure love for me, pouring much of my own life experiences into this story, and knowing so many people have been touched by it is an amazing gift. It’s been fun imagining how these characters could grow and develop.

I cannot thank @cb150681 @letitrainletitsnowbutdontletmego @mtngirlforever @runnin-on-sunshine enough. I never would have made it to the end without the unique ways in which each of you supported me and this process. I owe you ladies everything. The countless hours you’ve all generously given me in both creative support and friendship… I can never express what that’s meant to me.

I’m not sure what comes next for me with fanfic, that door is definitely wide open, but for now I’m going to focus on completing my writing courses and hope to publish more original works. I can’t say thank you enough.

I hope you enjoy the conclusion of Aftermath. I have stressed over this chapter for weeks, editing and adding things, hoping it lives up to all your expectations. Ultimately I decided it should end with a nod to its beginning, bringing everything full circle.

The first sentence of the author’s note made me start to cry, and the tears continued through this bittersweet ending. This story was absolutely beautiful and I’m sad to see it end. I love how you encapsulated all the feelings of the Halstead family about Jay getting shot and their parents retiring, it was wonderfully done.

Maybe you could do a fic of one shots of the life of the Halstead family when they had kids 😉 it would be amazing

Haha I can’t get over how many people have asked for this! I keep getting prompts sent to me. It blows my mind the support for this story. I’ve definitely been letting the idea roll around in my head. I’ll never get enough of linstead like this! It’s just finding the time... I have a crazy schedule I maintain (it’s probably pretty obvious from the sporadic nature of my updates lol) and some bucket list goals I really want to achieve this year but I’ll never say never! As @queseraone keeps reminding me LINSTEAD FOR LIFE!

This was absolutely beautiful. I love how you captured all these moments and it was adorable seeing how Jay and Gabe’s relationship came to be. I’m sad to see that this story is coming to and end but it was amazing
