In high school I studied Japanese as my foreign language. The textbook had characters with different interests to talk about and our teacher had us all create our own characters as well to explore a wide vocabulary, but especially encouraged us to choose different ages and genders to practice the levels of politeness and grammar Japanese has that’s not as strict in English.

We made our own personal business cards to trade with classmates while we had conversation time and for the 40 minutes of Japanese class each day I became an 89 year old man named Arashi (storm) who was allowed to be blunt and rude because I was the oldest. I used “ore” instead of “watashi” and introduced slang the textbook didn’t have and doted on my grandchildren (classmates who chose to be younger than their true age).

I loved being a grumpy old man.
