Courtesy of the Cincinnati Art Museum, we have this gorgeous silk gown dating from 1862-1864. Really, right in that American Civil War time period.
There are precious few details about this dress from the listing, but I can see a few interesting hints from what we're looking at.
Obviously, this is peak crinoline time. The petticoats and structure needed to pull off this silhouette were a true technological achievement.
But that pop of bright mauve? That there is, I bet, Mauveine or Perkin's purple, an aniline dye that was discovered in the previous decade. This would have been very, very fashionable at the time. The ribbon embroidery pattern looks like an adapted Greek Key Box design, but feel free to correct me if you've got a better name for it (I tried and Google was not my friend). .
Lastly, there's a lovely border of black lace around the cuffs and mid bodice, and while you might say "too much" I don't think that's possible given the rest of the gown!
Trying to decide whether I should be hearing scooby-doo, loony toons, or ed edd n eddy sound effects
Characters being compared to dogs always use terriers or pitbulls or something for their metaphors. “They grab on and they don’t let go” “They keep worrying at it until it’s dead” etc.
Anyway, I want to see collies used as metaphors. Albert Payson Terhune style. “He was like an attack dog–making slash-and-run attacks, cutting them up worse every time, never staying in range long enough to get hurt but circling back over and over.”
@animatedamerican yes EXCELLENT.
“He was like a bloodhound–not actually that violent at all, but his reputation did the work for him.”
“He was like a corgi: by all signs unaware that a fight was even happening, just enthusiastic and delighted to be involved.”
“He was like a labrador– so known for being friendly and having a soft mouth that everyone forgot that he was actually quite large and had teeth.”
“He was like a poodle - much smarter than you’d expect for someone with such flamboyant hair ”
“He was like an Irish Wolfhound - he could do more damage being friendly than most people could do in a blind rage.”
He was like a beagle - AAAUUUUUOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO *breath* AUUUUUUUUUUUUOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

A bit of fanart for @demonoflight‘s adorable OC, Sekai, because it’s his birthday today! ...even though you can barely see him. ...W-welcome to the world, lil’ guy!
He’s very cute and has thoroughly stolen my heart.
Please tell me your headcanons about Arukenimon's peculiar love of drapes, if you do not mind. I just found out about that today and I am losing my mind a little.
Ah! I see, you've found translations of the Digimon anime official visual dictionary's Digimon profiles! Truly a treasure. There's even more stuff in there that makes these books even more of a treasure, but that's for people better than me at Japanese to translate. (Remind me to get a proper scanner sometime.)
However, I don't know if this will come as a disappointment or not, but I'm afraid that part of Arukenimon's profile was mistranslated. I have tracked down and purchased all six volumes of the visual dictionary, as well as the super visual dictionary that has the information from previous books + Frontier, and can tell you that this stemmed from the translator misreading the kana ブ (bu) as プ (pu).
So here's the scoop: Arukenimon's actual favorite thing is drives, as in going on drives. Considering how often we see her and Mummymon in the dune buggy, plus the truck and car in the real world later, it makes sense, doesn't it? I for one am very happy chilling in the dune buggy is a highlight of her day.
Of course, having lived with the mistranslation for so many years, I had to figure out what the hell that even means, and subsequently learned that regular ol' spiders really like hiding in dark places, including the folds of curtains and heavy drapes. I ended up headcanoning that sometimes when she's in a bad mood, Arukenimon goes to the Giga House to sulk in the curtains (particularly in the study). It's the only place big enough for a spider her size, after all.
There is literally nothing about any of this that could disappoint me. Drives. She likes drives. I’m not crying you’re crying.
I was just assuming that ‘drapes’ was in fact some kind of spider joke, so this headcanon is just as delightful. Especially since, once upon a time, I used to wake up to a spider chilling in my curtains basically every morning. Thank you. ;w;
