The Art Of Javier Gimenez Ratti

So I became a dad two weeks ago. I now live in a city but i will soon move to a coastal city in Uruguay near the beach. I've been thinking about how much I will enjoy the waves with my daughter when she grows up, and I’d really like her to be the kind of girl that gets back up when she gets knocked down. The water in punta del este is pretty heavy, so this will happen a lot! Thinking about that I made a very little girl that looks like my wife having fun with the waves. I love using sequential images in illustration and comics, some artists like frank quietly are really good at this, so i wanted to give it a shot. I'd like to do more stuff like this, telling a small sequential story in an image. Have you ever been tumbled around by a wave?

These kids should just follow the map! I was practicing tree trunks and I started wondering how graphic I could get until they could be tree trunks or…. Something else! The more I think about doing comics the more I feel like playing with narrative aspects that can lead to small moments like this one. What is your favorite fictional spider?

My first attempt at a short comic. What do you think? I started thinking about quarantine and what it would mean for all those pigeons in the parks. Who feeds them now? I thought it would be funny to see them take matters into their own hands. How about you? What crazy story did you hear during quarantine?

You are still alive right?

yes! Just stupidly busy!!! But I’m getting a new camera that will make shooting videos super easy pretty soon, and I’m writing a list of new videos to make, so 2019 should be a pretty busy year! Any Requests?

I love your YouTube channel! If you’re still planning on doing tutorials, do you think you could make one about facial hair?

I will when I get back to making videos, but I don’t know when that will be!!!

I love your channel Javi! Do you think you could do a tutorial on light and coloring?

Yes! It’s on my list for when I get back! When will I get back? Well, I thankfully have a lot of work so whenever I get the chance!!!

what is your advice for someone who wants to draw people but is intimidated to learn anatomy?

Yes! Andrew Loomis’ figure drawing for all it's worth. It is the definite drawing people book. It tackles anatomy but in a simple, understandable way. It is how I learned!

may i ask a strange question? how does one sketch? ive tried, but i cant seem to parse the shapes properly as i draw the guidelines and such, and when i try to make it clearer, i end up catching myself drawing the "final product." due to this tendency ive found myself trying to draw by sight, but i really would like to learn how to sketch something without losing my entire mental picture in the process. forgive me if this is an overly complicated query!

Think about drawing as zooming in a small image until it’s big. if you are drawing on a big page, do it from a distance, with your arm extended, try to work on very broad, loose strokes and very big shapes. Once you are satisfied with that, work towards detail slowly. Like a blurry image that gets clearer. If I’m not being clear enough, check this video out:

Javi I love your tutorials! I renewed my art skills after a long pause with your help, thank you ! You inspire me!

That’s great to hear!!!!! Sorry I took so much to answer this, I’m in a bit of a pause with the whole youtube/tutorial thing, but I promise to come back!

Hey Javi, do you ever have a lack a motivation for drawing and if yes, how do you deal with this? I followed a lot of tutorials and think I learned quite a lot (from you included) but I seem to have lost my goal and fun on the way. I would appreciate some advice :) It's impressive how many tutorials you did so quickly. Greetings from Germany! J

Most of the time I’m drawing for clients, so deadlines trump over motivation. At the same time, forcing myself to draw many hours a day to complete client work made me automatically able to draw for hours everyday, even if there is not much work to be done.

Still, even if unmotivated, just doodle. doodle while you watch tv, doodle in bed, doodle in the bus. From doodling you will start forming ideas and those ideas will turn into something you are actually motivated to draw. Do it without aim and without pressure. The objective is to enjoy yourself and get better. Don’t compare yourself to other artists, you don’t know their struggle. You only know yours, so if every day you doodle a little, you will see that you will get better. Slowly, fast, it doesn’t matter. You are getting better.

TIPS ON COMPOSITION

Composition can be hard, but learning about it can make the difference between making a great illustration or polishing a turd for not solving initial problems. So here are some tips to help you with that, of course you can always watch the video, and if you like this and want more, you can support me on PATREON
