asoiaf meme (minor characters): 2/2 places ~ highgarden

The great castle of Highgarden, the ancient seat of the Tyrell lords and the Gardener kings before them, sits atop a verdant hill overlooking the broad and tranquil waters of the Mander. Seen from afar, the castle “looks so much a part of the land one could think that it had grown there, rather than being built.” Many consider Highgarden to be the most beautiful castle in all the Seven Kingdoms, a claim that only the men of the Vale see fit to dispute. (They prefer their own Eyrie).

A child shall not be stained by stained by their father’ sins. The little Lady Boratheon was far from kin but he vowed to protect her, an innocent child among the horrors of Westeros. The weather declined and soon their chances of survival will be slim to none. Loras extended a hand to the girl, the other clutched onto the hilt of his blade. “I’ll protect you.”

A Song of Blood and Steel

The road from Highgarden to the North was longer and colder than he remembered. Perhaps the significance of the journey took a toll on his weary body. Regardless of his wounds, he was determined to reach Winterfell before dark, for the roads become perilous in the dark. He rode without rest and carried little, only food and water for the journey and the clothes on his back. The only remnant of his once lordly life was lost many moons ago. Even so he was still Loras Tyrell, last of his name and growing strong. 

Before long, the road slowly began to litter with vendors and town folk, indicating the near end of his journey. Alongside him rode another, golden hair, heavy armour and an unmissable iron hand. A Lannister in Winterfell. Loras froze, slowing his steed as to drift back in case of danger. He wondered if King’s Landing knew of his survival and if the Kingslayer had a part in it.

The stars did not shine that night. 

Loras woke abruptly to the eerie quiet of the forest after another terrible dream. The twisted things visit him often since Baelor; this time the subject of his torment was far too close to his heart to bare. Tired blue eyes fell shut as he focused on the rhythm of each breath, in and out, in and out. 

“Sister?” he whispered quietly into the dark, finding ground beneath calloused hands. She was his only comfort, his home and his protector, the one person he trusted more than anything. He needed her then, when the hour was dire. “...Marge, are you awake?”
