anti-racism resource post for twilight fans

back when midnight sun was officially announced, i wrote a post talking about my experience as a white fan of the series, back when i was younger and as i’ve grown and educated myself and interacted with the fandom more and more. now that tumblr lets you pin a post, i wanted to make a new post for resources, because the original post is a lot to scroll through and i wanted the links to be more accessible + easier to find.

under the cut is links to learn about racism (both in general and specifically anti- indigenous, as that is the largest issue present in the twilight books), ways to help, and links to check out various indigenous creators that deserve your support. always open to suggestions of links to add, in any of the categories. if i have linked your post/blog/website/etc. and you do not want it linked, please let me know and i will remove it asap. updated often.

most important: the quileute tribe is currently working on their move to higher ground project. many of their lands are currently in flooding danger zones, and this project is (as the name suggests) working to move to safer areas so they can continue to thrive. if you are able, please consider donating to that project here.

Quick PSA, if you get one of those "Work scanned, AI use detected" comments on AO3, just mark them as spam.

Some moron apparently built a bot to annoy or prank hundreds of authors.

There is no scanning process, your work doesn't actually resemble AI writing, it's all bullshit. Mark the comment as spam (on AO3, not the email notification you got about the comment!) and don't let it get to you.

The spam comments have evolved.

They are now also linking to a site they claim is able to scan works and tell you whether they were AI written or not, and that you should do that before reading a fic.

It should go without saying that you should not, under no circumstances, visit a site advertised in a spam comment.

In this case, I'd say there's even a chance that the "scanning" site is actually used to scrape fics and use them for future AI writing. What it definitely doesn't do is tell you whether something was AI written or not. That's a bullshit claim.

Don't use that site. Don't believe these spam comments, whether you get them on your own works or see them on someone else's.

It's all bullshit.

Just got another one, so here's what they look like to anyone curious. They're never real users, either, just keysmashes for the display name.

As someone who works in education, actual AI detectors don't even work well and are rendered obsolete within weeks if not days. Please spread this around to spare your fellow writers and reader!

i feel like no one really wants to hear that sleep/exercise/nutrition/hydration are major factors in treating mental health issues bc we’ve all talked to that person who thinks your depression would be cured by one good session of goat yoga or whatever but unfortunately they do help and i’m chronically annoyed about it

Lotsa people in the notes like "i can't change these habits because im too broke/depressed" which, as a formerly broke and depressed person, is patently untrue, so here's some starting points:

-hydration: carry around a water bottle. a funky metal water bottle you can put stickers on is like $10 and if you can’t afford it just chronically refill a gatorade bottle or smth. Just having water nearby will help. And hydration really, really helps with energy levels for things like...

-exercise: my advice for this always is "find a sport you actually like", but if you're coming off of a years-long depressive sedentary period, start by walking. Like, TO places. The bus stop. A neat tree in your neighborhood. Is there a convenience store nearby? Go get a gatorade (see:hydration). Is there a library or other place where people gather? Even better. This is free and doesn't have to take any longer than 10 minutes at first. And don't go telling yourself "oh it was only 10 minutes it doesn't count" STOP! That is the depression talking! Literally any amount of movement is 100x more movement than you were getting on the couch! You're doing great! And once you're in a good exercise habit, it will help a lot with...

-sleep: ah, the white whale. But remember that literally just lying quietly in the dark is resting, even if you don't sleep (it's science!). Try to be in bed, no lights or phones, at the same time every night and just...chill. listen to some chill music. Try not to get up for a least a few hours. And then, the next day, when you’re wrecked?? Try to avoid napping at all costs. Your circadian rhythm should theoretically stabilize after a few nights of doing this, and resting should become easier. Human chemistry is SO routine based, just keep your schedule as best you can!

Nutrition: yeah this is depression hell. But it's not as expensive as it seems to "eat healthy". Apples, bananas, and oranges are all cheaper than chips and also require pretty much no prep, just shove em in your mouth (and don't give me that shit about caloric content; yes, I know chips are more filling, but they're not going to give you the happy chemicals you need to help depression. If you're so broke you will starve without 100 extra calories from a bag of doritos, your depression has environmental causes much deeper than lack of apples.) If you CAN cook even a little bit: frozen vegetables are cheap af and they slap with some butter and garlic powder. Throw some frozen peas in your mac and cheese. Kale and zucchini are cheap as hell in summer and they are delicious when flash fried with butter and salt. I know taking 5 minutes to cook seems insurmountable when you’re depressed but as my therapist always says, the cure for depression is doing the things depression doesn't want you to do. And it will improve your mood so, so, so much to get some fruits and veggies in you.

please notice that literally ALL of the above are about building HABITS. And habits are built by inches. A single serving of frozen vegetables will not cure your depression. But a single serving of vegetables, every day? a liter of water, every day? a short walk to see some trees or smth, every day? It really does help. And Don’t beat yourself up if you miss a day or seven days or fourteen days. Just pick it back up where you left off. 2 servings of vegetables in a month is better than 0 servings in a month, or a year.

Okay so like, this is hard because they're both SUCH people of their time but I honestly think no, but it would have a different likeliness depending on whether Edward was a teen in 2005 or Bella was a teen in 1918.

If Edward was a teen in 2005, he'd be gay, and I really don't think I'm being brave for this. I think he falls a little short of 100% Into Men but I really honestly think that if he'd had the opportunity to develop his own sense of self, he would have chosen to express himself as a demi- romantic gay man rather than the almost completely asexual hetero that he is in cannon. So no. Bella wouldn't be on the table. And honestly, I don't even think they would be friends. They have no overlapping interests and Edward is inherently smug and stubborn. Human!Edward is a mean girl, for sure.

If Bella was in 1918, I still think no, but the odds are evened up again. Compulsory heterosexuality is back on the table and in full swing. They're of a ~similar-ish~ tax bracket so marriage would be okay, maybe Bella would be marrying up a bit, but, anyway--

This would hinge on a few things: if Edward was obsessed with war still, it would be difficult. I think his self sacrificing nature means that he wouldn't want to fall in love with a woman and leave her behind. So if he met Bella before deployment and he liked her enough, he'd let her go, for sure.

If we aren't talking about the war, then it depends on how good of a woman Bella has learned to be. Because from her time in 2005 we get conflicting reports. On the one hand, she's a supreme carer to the point of neuroticism. She can cook, clean, nurse back to health, suffer in silence, etc. on the other hand, she's not great at Performing Womanhood. The little social graces illude her. Maybe she would be kind of a weird little recluse. Edward, on the other hand, would always be pretty popular in my estimation. And he would have no need to chase Bella because the blood and mind reading things aren't on the table.

tldr: no, probably not. In 2005 they might actively dislike each other. In 1918 I don't even think they're acquainted.

You don’t need to overcome your disability or mental illness to be “worthy”.

There’s a lot of focus on people “defying the odds” and showing that their disability “can’t hold them back”.

But here’s the thing... sometimes your disability does hold you back. Sometimes, no matter how much you want to, you can’t do some things.

Disabilities are disabling and you don’t need to pretend they’re not.

And it’s okay. You’re still worthy.
