New Intro Post!

Hello! I'm Katy L. Wood, an author/illustrator and disaster educator/researcher from Colorado. I write and self-publish fantasy adventure and survival thriller books, and create disaster education resources aimed at making information related to disasters and preparedness more accessible to everyday people.

My askbox is pretty much always open if you have questions related to art, writing, or disasters. I might not get to it right away, but I will get to it!

Here's a little introduction to all my books! You can find out more about each one on my art and writing website, including links for where to buy. You can also buy all my ebooks directly from my shop, and sometimes physical books too if I've got some extras lying around from in person shows!

You can also subscribe to my newsletter on that website, so you can get news about any new projects right in your inbox! I don't send it very often, just when there's new stuff going on.

My website also has a tip jar if you would like to send a little support that way. :)

🏳️‍🌈All books are super duper queer, but none of them are about BEING queer. The characters just ARE queer while getting up to other nonsense.🏳️‍🌈

📚🐎The Pits🐎

A fantasy western adventure, with an illustration in each chapter.

When Clarabella's girlfriend goes missing, she seeks out the only person who might be able to help: her outlaw older sibling Royal, who she hasn't seen in years. Royal knows more about the strange magic of their world than anyone. More than they should. More than the magic wants them to know.

📚⛺Camp Daze

A realistic look at trying to survive during a sudden apocalypse.

Conifer was raised to survive the end of the world, any end of the world. Except this one. When the bombs drop, she finds herself stranded in the mountains with over a hundred young campers, and only a handful of other young counselors to help her.

📚🌲Poison in the Blood🌲

A fantasy adventure with characters that you love to hate.

Three hundred years ago, the world changed forever when vampires came out of the shadows to feed on the sick and dying after plagues swept the world.

Ten years ago, Dustin Lockwood's little sister Shae went missing as their family fled across the desolate, abandoned portions of North America. He would do anything to find her, even now.

Shae Lockwood, living it up as a rare human actress, would do anything not to be found.

📚🔥Lie Down in the Ashes🔥

Coming soon! Releasing everywhere summer 2025.

A realistic survival thriller told through prose and epistolary elements.

Five teens go out for one last camping trip before school starts, only for one of them to accidentally start a wildfire that risks all of their lives, and the lives of many others. Their only hope is an old friend who dropped out of school to work at the local mine, in a truck he stole.

I have been fascinated with how we tell the stories of disasters, both fictionally and in non-fiction, for years. I think there is a lot we can learn from narrative methods when it comes to better sharing disaster related information, and I'm aiming to hopefully do a PhD to dig into it more! (Might have to move to Canada to do it at this point, but I'll fuckin' figure it out.)

All my disaster related work is collected on this website.

I create posters and infographics related to different disasters and disaster preparedness. The aim is to create easy to understand, easy to share resources to help people in various disaster scenarios. You can view all of them here.

I also do periodic giveaways for my evacuation wallet cards, a handy little resource that will help you remember what to bring in the event of an evacuation, with different sections based on how much time you have. I'll always post about it when I've got some to give away!

If you would like to support the giveaways of the wallet cards, I have a Ko-fi where you can donate to help me buy stamps and envelopes!

🔵My Bluesky. I use it off and on, but if Tumblr does ever go down entirely, I'll probably start using it more.

I've got TikTok too, but that is 100% gonna be dead here in a couple months, so I'm not going to bother to link it.

My new rosebush has buds! :D

Can't wait for her to grow. She's a lovely orange and yellow climbing rose, and I planted her right outside my office window so I'll be able to see the flowers while I work once she's all grown up.

Just applied for a Graduate Certificate at CU Denver and good god, could they have asked any more questions to get me to prove my Colorado residency? I don't know when I first had a car registration in my name, y'all. I can puzzle out the year, but the month? Fuck if I know.

"In a gesture of goodwill and neighborliness, Indian officials transferred 88 ambulances to Sri Lanka counterparts back in 2016.

Now, ten years on, this gift has turned out to be a lifesaving one for 1.5 million Sri Lankans who have ridden and received urgent care in the back of those ambulances and the ones added to the fleet in the following years.

At the time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over the ambulances and Sri Lanka was able to launch the nation’s first national emergency service—equivalent to our 911 or Britain’s 999.

“Today, the fleet size of ambulances has grown to 322. It is used to provide free emergency transportation services to the whole country day and night,” Sri Lankan Minister of Health and Media Nalinda Jayatissa told Modi in a communication last Saturday.

Jayatissa said that national statistics report that 2.44 million people have received care in these ambulances for things like cardiac arrest, stroke, and road accidents. 65% of these were in the “golden hour” where medical care within a few minutes can make the difference between life and death immediately.

“That is nearly 1.5 million lives saved up to now due to your generosity, and continues to save lives in Sri Lanka,” Jayatissa said.

Sri Lanka ranks well above other South Asian countries in the Human Development Index with an index score of 0.750, and out of 142 countries surveyed by the World Economic Forum, Sri Lanka cracked the top-third in terms of health industry. That was in 2011, before the ambulance donations arrived.

More modern estimates keep Sri Lanka ahead of other South Asian economies for health industry development, and the island has eradicated several infectious diseases ahead of established targets. Its life expectancy of 75.5 years at birth is 10% higher than the world average, and the country is ranked number 5 on the World Giving Index which ranks charitable behavior and gestures among the population."

I only hate certain types of fic the same way I hate mosquitos and ticks. Like get these nasty little buggers away from me but also I respect their place in the ecosystem.

Me, spraying bug spray: blocked.

Listen and sometimes? To enjoy running through a beautiful field of grass and flowers (ao3) you have to tolerate the fact that bugs (fics you don’t like) are there and maybe you will even encounter one, but you can use bugspray (filtered tags) to reduce the likelihood of that. Because the alternative is not getting to experience the beautiful field of grass and flowers.

Over the last 24-48 hours, TikTok has gone gloves off and basically said, "alrighty, you think we're a propaganda machine? Then we're going to be a fucking propaganda machine. Specifically, we're going to undo YOUR propaganda."

Dozens of Chinese manufacturers are getting pushed to the FYP right now and spilling all SORTS of tea about luxury brands and how much they actually cost and the factory conditions and how you too can just get stuff directly and even with the tariffs it'll still be cheaper than buying it here in the US.

Now, is this still propaganda from China, with things probably being glossed over and sweetened up? Of course. But it's still utterly fascinating to watch this unfold. The whole TikTok fight this year has been. Papers need to be written about this shit from cultural perspectives, sociological perspectives, economic perspectives, political perspectives, political perspectives, all the perspectives because we are in the middle of a literal digital war between two global super powers and the main battlefield is a social media app. It's wild.

Sleeping oh so peacefully like she didn't manage to annoy every wildland fire person in a several country radius very early on this Saturday morning.

You see.

My alarm normally goes off at seven during the week. At approximately one minute past seven this Saturday morning I was awoken by her screaming at full volume DIRECTLY in my face because I had not assumed the proper Morning Snuggling Position.

So I rolled into said position and decided to check my phone. And what did I find on my phone? A red flag warning for dangerous fire conditions for our area.

But. See. The dispatch center where I currently work is still closed on the weekends, because we haven't moved to our seven day summer staffing schedule yet. So no one was there to issue the notifications we send out to all fire personnel in the area.

So I had to do it. And I knew if I didn't do it right then, I was going to fall back asleep and forget about it. So I did it right then. Which meant every wildland fire person across several counties got a very early Saturday morning text message because of my cat.

She is unrepentant.

She also only snuggled for about ten minutes before leaving.

I want to own one of his prints SO BAD but they are EXPENSIVE and he only sells them twice a year and you never know which ones he’ll sell each time.

I have one of his prints that I bought for my Grandpa for his birthday in 2020. He died before I could give it to him, and it’s been rolled up in my closet ever since. I just don’t know what to do with it, it hurts my heart.

Awww. I'm so sorry. :(

I hate when you go to the grocery store and your choices are:

  1. Container that is just a touch smaller than what you need for your recipe.
  2. Container that is 3x the size of what you need for your recipe.

In unrelated news, I now have 2x the lasagna I had intended to make.
