Since my Moscow metro post is still getting a lot of reblogs, I figured I’d make a post about another one of the lesser-known Moscow attractions.

Everybody knows about the Kremlin, and St. Basil’s Cathedral, but other structures within the complex get a lot less recognition.

"Kremlin" actually means "fortress," or "fortified citadel" (the Moscow Kremlin is only one of the Kremlins in Russia) and encompasses a fairly large area with quite a number of interior buildings.

These particular photos are of the interior of Terem Palace, one of the oldest royal dwellings still standing, and the first one made of stone. It was built at the turn of the 16th century (1499-1508) as a residence for Ivan III. Ivan IV, better known as Ivan the Terrible, lived and ruled in this palace in the mid-1500s. Only one floor survives from this period, as the rest was rebuilt by the first tsar of the Romanov family in 1635.

Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to visit the palace, except by special permit. It is currently an official residence of the president (yeah, as though Putin actually lives there), and is closed to the public.
