Gilmore Girls— “Let Me Hear Your Balalaikas Ringing Out” (2005) “We always played that Rory and Jess saw each other for what they were. That was the great thing about that relationship. She saw Jess for exactly what he was, and he really got her. So it just seemed like a natural thing [for Jess to pull Rory out of her funk] because you needed somebody to do it.” —Amy Sherman-Palladino

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel— “How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall?” (2022) “Part of what I love about [Midge and Lenny’s] relationship is he looks at her as his equal. He doesn’t look at her like a skirt or a conquest. And when they’re sitting and drinking in that bar, they’re doing so as two comics who are beaten down. They’re peers and they’re trying to help each other.” —Amy Sherman-Palladino

Emerging from the depths to say damn, this Taylor album has me in my feelings and all I want is to go back in time and give this album to the sad and anxious 19 year old me whose cousin had just died, who listened to safe and sound over and over again, who was overdramatically heartbroken by what she thought were lacking-in-depth bubblegum pop songs on red, who had no friends and only had fandom and spent her days on message boards hoping and praying and explaining why Taylor would make this type of album one day. This one is for you my dear former self.

What are your favorite tv shows atm ?

ooh, I mean there’s a lot…I adore the good place, I love the marvelous mrs. maisel, insecure, and transparent (too bad jeffrey tambor turned out to be shit). unbreakable kimmy schmidt is pretty fab. I keep up with speechless, fresh off the boat and brooklyn nine-nine and they’re all great but kind of hit and miss at this point with whether a given episode is good or not (but regardless, they’re all important for representation!)

after htgawm betrayed me I basically stopped watching dramas but recently-ish I watched anne (with an e) and strike which were enjoyable and even though it’s over, I absolutely adore broadchurch!

a revised and updated version of my Stages Almost Every Gilmore Girls Fan Goes Through in regards to Rory Gilmore:

Stage 1, young teenage fan: loves Rory Gilmore and wants to be her

Stage 2, older teenage fan: loves younger Rory Gilmore but hates older Rory Gilmore and doesn’t want to be her

Stage 3, young college age fan: dislikes Rory Gilmore altogether & doesn’t understand why the whole town loves her

Stage 4, older college age fan staring into the gaping maw of their own life’s impending existential crisis: Rory Gilmore Did Nothing Wrong

Stage 5, young adult fan: Rory Gilmore is a flawed character who made some serious mistakes when she was older but it’s understandable and ignoring bad writing choices she mostly grew as a person & was precious when younger

Stage 6, fan who just binge watched the revival: hates Rory Gilmore

Stage 7, fan who has elected to ignore the revival: hates ASP

circa early-mid 2000s Gilmore Girls fandom things, cause nostalgia:

- literati, sophies, narcos, JavaJunkies

- no one calling anyone’s shipping preference by “Team [guy’s name]” cause we weren’t plebeians

- fanfiction.net. disclaimer: I don’t own Gilmore Girls. if I did I wouldn’t have [some complaint about s6 or s7]

- 5,000 lit fic where Rory meets Jess on the campaign trail in Philly and they become emails friends then dance together and Luke and Lorelai’s wedding

- lit fic, lit vid, lit fan, everything was “lit” in the literati fandom in 2009

- everyone’s endless speculation and faith in the mythic “last four words” and if ASP had written season 7 and at the same time trying to come up with excuses for why ASP imploded the season 6 finale

- getting excited about that new Ausiello interview.  “is there going to be a movie?”

- owning all the DVDs, having no idea what the show looks like in wide screen, the endless lalalala soundtrack on the menu screen

- when that bulky kinda ugly huge new DVD box set of the entire series came out and I’m pretty sure almost no one actually bought it

- watching dozens of youtube clips from the series and having endless discussion and debate in the comments section cause comments sections on youtube were still something you dared to look at and even engage with

- fan forums and anti-forums and individual episode discussions & just forums

- gifsets of scenes being incredibly rare, but picspams being everywhere

- no one commenting or making jokes about how the show “felt old” cause it was literally yesterday and cellphones still mostly looked like that, honestly

Has anyone watched The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel yet?

My cousins and I got about ½ way through it today. We are finishing it next weekend. I know ASP likes to reuse her characters a lot. (And I am for that because she generally picks really good actors.) but she also definitely has a style of writing that while I LOVE, makes me miss Gilmore Girls a lot when I watch one of her other shows.

My cousins and I are big Big BIG Gilmore Girls fans. Like watched the entire season multiple times, reference it daily, know it backwards and forwards and with our eyes closed. So we know that characters and the writing super well. We compared a lot of the charactors.

*spoilers and predictions ahead*

Joel - is a mixture of Logan and Christopher, he’s not going to amount to much. He will be the one who pushes buttons and while he is never the actual villian and will often not entirely mean the cause as much hurt as he does, he won’t be liked much and is more or less just there to mess with the plot

Suzie - she has a lot of Luke qualities, she wears the same hat and similiar outfit everyday no matter what. She supportive but nit picks. She complains but ultimately wants the best for Maisel. She hardly leaves the bar she runs. She puts up a tough front but is really soft. *she complains about jam hands!! I mean come on!!*

Midge- not as Lorelai like as I expected. She has some qualities, I feel like her relationship with her parents is kind of the same. She talks fast and has quick wit. She’s self confident and independent. She does what she needs to do to take care of herself and her family. They say similar things. Midge has young children she leaves behind WAY more then Lorelai would ever leave behind Rory. I know ASP doesn’t write children well at all but I wish they were a bit more involved

Midge’s parents - wealthy, set in their ways. Her father is stubborn but can be soft with her at times. He is always on his way to or from work. Her mother wants things her way and if they arnt she ignores the problem. She can be cold when things don’t go the way she wants. She tends to over react and get upset. She runs the house. Everything is neat, they have a maid and high expectations …. ringing any bells???

There are other charactors. Midge had a friend who is like Sookie, flightly and a bit self conscious but loyal and supportive. Joel’s parents are a bit involved. ASP has picked an entirely new environment, time, and family background but it’s still really good. I will finish it for sure. I may rewatch in a little while. It will never be Gilmore Girls. Nothing will ever top Gilmore Girls and giving the choice I will always pick Gilmore Girls over this. But this is still good and I recomend it to any Gilmore Girl lover or ASP fan.

I really, really loved it, which was surprising because I felt kind of ‘meh’ about the pilot until the end. Kind of like Bunheads, the pilot sets up a certain story and then veers off into a completely different (& better) direction.

There were so many similarities to GG, much more than I was expecting, especially with their family stuff. In a weird way it kind of hit all the right notes that I’ve been missing from Gilmore.

Joel is literally Christopher. All his lines could be said by Christopher and everything he does could be done by Christopher. You want to like him and feel bad for him but he’s literally just a piece of shit.

Susie is amazing and quite a bit like Luke. I feel like if Luke had been a woman as was originally planned, this is pretty much what it’d be like.

I love that Midge is her own character. She doesn’t really remind me of Lorelai, maybe partly because the actresses don’t seem similar at all to me, and partially because Lorelai was a lot more awkward and purposely tried to cause social chaos.

Sometimes Midge actually reminds me of Rory, with her organization and diligent studying of the things she’s trying to get good at. Once in awhile she’ll say a very Michelle-ish line, and interestingly, the more I watched the more I felt like the ASP character she reminds me the most of, in a way, is Sasha. Partly because the actresses look similar(ish) and have similar mannerisms, but the characters also align in a weird way.

Midge’s parents are great. Joel’s parents are even greater though IMO - they really bring something ASP hasn’t written into characters before. The way they deal with the kids is weird, but at least we can realistically assume Midge’s mom can probably take care of them when she’s not.
