[image description: three Christmas-themed squishy plush sitting on a mottled blue, white and black night-sky quilt cover. One plush is brown with white icing to look like a plum pudding; one is a tan reindeer with small tan antlers and a round red nose, like Rudolph; and the last is a grey bear with a red bow tie and a red and white Santa hat. All three plush have round dot eyes and curved mouths machine-embroidered in black thread.]

Christmas Squishy Plush - K-Mart, $4 AUD.

Variants: Plum Pudding, Bear, Reindeer, Santa (fourth not pictured).

Dimensions: 10 cm across (approx).

My local K-Mart has put out their Christmas decorations in their seasonal section--regular plush and squishy plush. The web listing above says “mini”, but these are the same size as K-Mart’s other house-brand squishy plushies.

These do have a fragrance, the same as their regular squishy plush--a sweet, bready sort of smell. It isn’t strong, but I’ve found that it lasts longer than the Squeezamals’ scent. If you can’t stand any fragrance at all, these may not be the best squishy plush for you. It’s mild enough for me, but the persistence is worth mentioning!

This is very early for a Christmas post, but I want to draw attention to these if you’re like me and want to pick through the boxes to find the softest plush. As usual, the softness ranged from “pleasantly squishy” to “how is that even foam”. Having three boxes new on the shelf meant I could choose the best ones--squishy soft with no dirt marks or stray threads. Unfortunately, because they are displayed in open boxes, it’s not always easy to find ones without marks, and many of them were far too firm for my hands.

While I’ve been struggling to stim as I once did, the koala from the original set has been my most-used toy in the months since purchasing. It has a small hole from wear and the plush is a bit flattened, but it’s held up so much longer than a foam squishy and it’s nowhere close to being too worn to use. Unless you dislike plush textures or need something completely odourless, I have to recommend K-Mart’s squishy plush--with the proviso that if you need the softest squishies, you should purchase these in-person instead of online.

I remember US-based folks saying that the original K-Mart squishy plush were available in your Target stores, so it may be worth checking there for these.

Also, can I point out that there’s a plum pudding? Food squishy plush!

How Stimming Changes Over Time

We all know for a fact that autistics stim to regulate our inner and outer stimuli and to express ourselves, but another thing we don’t usually hear about is that stims change over time. That can feel very invalidating when we track the patterns of our stims and see certain stims drop out of use, or stims we didn’t like before becoming more normalized in our behaviors.

What can change our natural stims?

  • A Physical Illness. If you are feeling physical pain somewhere in your body, you may stop or change certain stims to avoid the pain. That stim can permanently be altered even after the pain goes away. Another example is if you develop a physical disability, new stims may come along with it like popping joints out of your socket or feeling scars on your body. If you are blind, you may like the way light shines on your eyeballs. Losing your hearing may give you a love for musical bass because you can physically feel the music in your chest.
  • A Mental Illness. Sometimes mental illnesses may make you choose to self-harm, but even after you’re emotionally better, you may still self-harm as a stim. Mental illness causes more internal distress, which may require us to stim more to regulate. Autistics who are anxious may stim more and autistics who are depressed may stim less, because our moods easily affect our stims.
  • Environmental Change. If you used to live in a bigger place, but had to move into a smaller place and vice-versa ,your stims would most likely change to match your area. If, for example, you liked to pace a lot, but you could no longer do it, you might start relying on rocking more. It’s probable that living in a hotter climate, you may stim less outwardly to avoid overheating. Living somewhere colder, you may increase bodily stims to keep warm.
  • Ridicule and Abuse. This is one nearly every autistic has experienced. As a child, you may have been repeatedly punished or put down for engaging in a stim that someone did not like. Being in school, peers will have likely bullied you for doing something that they deemed “weird”. Even if we aren’t abused, we are usually self aware enough to recognize when someone thinks we are abnormal. They might make a remark that they think is harmless, but it actually causes problems with our self-esteem. All of these things can make us choose to suppress our stims to avoid further punishment and ostracizing.
  • Pride and Knowledge. On the other hand, learning to love ourselves and gaining pride and familiarity of who we are as autistics and what that means may cause us to feel more comfortable engaging in many different forms of stimming. A couple of weeks of learning could “change” us from doing hardly any stimming at all to doing a lot. This increase of outward stims does not mean we weren’t stimming before. There are so many subtle ways to stim that it’s 100% possible that we were still stimming back then and just didn’t consciously recognize it as such. (Continuing to learn about stimming and autism may help you figure out what those were.)
  • Growing Older. While growing older, our body may start to like certain stims less and other stims more, even if they do not cause pain. This could be for a number of reasons, but I believe it’s just our brain changing and adjusting with the increase of our life experiences. When you were younger you were probably working a lot harder to learn about life, and you were doing so many things for the first time and probably needed a lot more regulation than maybe you would while in your 40s, feeling very settled in your life and developing a hard set routine that hasn’t changed much in the last ten years.

There are a number of reasons why our stimming habits may change. There are ones that exist that I couldn’t even touch on and the ones I wrote about may not completely match up with your own experiences. The main point, though, is no matter if your stims have changed, increased, or decreased, they are still valid, and you are still autistic.

We have a new fidget/stim toy! It’s three rings connected with three pony beads. It has a nice bit of flexibility and the beads connecting the rings can spin. It can be bent and twisted around your fingers and is generally a very nice thing to fidget with.

Stock is low for the time being so order soon if you’re interested! The price is just $2 including shipping.

As of today, I’m starting a major medication change that has more-than-usual hazards in how it may interact with my other medications before I factor in the autistic-and-highly-sensitive-to-medication-changes deal.

(I wish, I wish folks had developed more medication dosages with the needs of sensitive DFAB autistic bodies in mind. I am fortunate enough to be now working with doctors who recognise that this is absolutely a thing we must take into account, but it narrows my options and makes everything so much more difficult.)

I am hopeful that (if there are no unendurable side-effects) we’ll eventually be able to get this new combination of meds to the same amount of serotonin and pain management I had at my most functional, because this combination is most likely to mirror it. But it’s also probable that this process will not be easy or fun for me.

I’ve spent the last six months stressed out of my mind. My psychiatrist thinks it’s a good thing in the sense that I am trying to do things even though my anxiety is through the damn roof, but there’s nothing that’s not overwhelming for me. I’m in pain because of it and I spend so much time trying to push back my anxiety and depression to do the minimum of what I want to do that I don’t have the energy to do "safe” or “fun” things. (I want to text my friends my new phone number. I haven’t even been able to do that.) Sometimes I find just enough energy for something new, but I fall apart right after doing so.

I can’t bear this, and smaller med changes have done nothing to help. So I’m going to be spending the next few weeks and months reducing one med and starting a new one (followed by a list of several other meds to try if this one doesn’t help).

I want to make this as easy for me as possible, so I’m putting this blog on hiatus. (I run several blogs, most of them aromantic ones, but the ones where I have to tag posts are hardest for me.) I may send posts to the queue if I see something and have the spoons to tag, but I’m not going to be putting time each week to find, tag and queue posts just to keep the queue going. There may be days without posts; there may be weeks without posts. I do hope to come back to something more regular eventually--I found a local equivalent for the Stretchy Squish Ball that I want to review for Aussies like me who can’t afford international shipping--but I can’t say how long that will be.

There are 3, 606 posts on this blog and I do tag as much as I can, so please remember that this blog is a searchable resource for information posts, reviews and tutorials on a range of different stim toys, even if it’s not updating as frequently.

Thank you so much for your patience and understanding, lovely followers.

Friendly reminder to invisibly disabled folks:

You are just as disabled as someone who is visibly disabled. You deserve to use accessible facilities and have your pain treated without discrimination. You deserve to have people believe you when you tell them you are suffering. Able-passing is a myth when you are still sick.

You are valid and you are enough.

New mermaid/flip sequin bags are now available

Photo descriptions: 3 pencil case style rectangular bags that are covered in flip or “mermaid” sequins, which can be turned over to change the color of the bag. Each bag has a silver metal oval shaped zipper pull, a black zipper that runs along the top and a strip of shiny silver material running horizontally across the bag just below the zipper. All are photographed on a plain white background. The first photo is of a light blue bag and a few of the sequins are turned over to show that the reverse sides are a deep purple color. The second photo is of a bag that is half mixed randomly distributed rainbow color sequins and half silver sequins. The third photo is of a bag that is half gold color sequins and half pink sequins.

I’m so happy and excited to play with my Halloween stim toys! Also the bat chewy is a lot smaller than I thought but I don’t mind!!! It’s super cute!!!! I even got a bracelet instead of the pen since I don’t really like the use of sugar skulls as Halloween decorations. Thank you so much!!! I’m so happy!!!!

Our new cactus chewable is made of soft flexible silicone suitable for chewing, fidgeting, sucking on or even brushing your teeth with! The 3 arms of this cactus chewable each have a different texture:

  • the long center arm features a soft toothbrush style brush on the front and grooves running the full length of the back
  • the right arm has a pattern of raised rectangles on both sides
  • the left arm has a low profile circle pattern on both sides

Photo descriptions: All four photos show a saguaro style cactus shaped silicone chewable on a plain white background. The center arm of the cactus is the tallest and has a toothbrush style brush on the front with a plain back side. The side arms are equally tall, coming up to the bottom of the brush on the center arm. The right arm has a pattern of raised rectangles at the top of both sides and the left arm has a pattern of rings at the top of both sides. The rest of the cactus is covered in long grooves running up the length of each arm from bottom to just below the textured areas. There is a hole pierced through the bottom of the stem.

Photo one is front view of a blue cactus chewable, photo 2 is a ¾ side view of a blue cactus chewable, photo 3 is a front view of a beige cactus chewable and photo 4 is a front view of a green cactus chewable.

ETA: I’d rate this for light to medium chewing with the front teeth and canines but it may stand up to more aggressive back teeth chewing. For reference, it is about as thick as the phoenix.

(also called snake twist puzzle)

This is a very compact version - small enough to fit in a pocket and the cubes have a slight bit of resistance so they snap nicely into place but are also very flexible.

Photo descriptions: Both photos are of a 27 block plastic puzzle in bright neon colors shown against a plain white background.

The first photo shows the blocks folded into a 3 x 3 cube of which two sides and the top are visible. The blocks are arranged in rows of 3 of the same color and the colors include pink, green, orange, yellow and blue.

The second photo shows the puzzle unfolded into a random irregular shape with the blocks folded and twisted at various angles. It shows how each of the blocks can fold in 3 directions relative to the block it is attached to. It also shows that the trio of blocks at each end are pink, with a yellow trio next on each side, then orange, then green, with a single trio of blue in the center.

I ordered these the other day and so glad they arrived today!!

I had requested cats on anything that had cat as an option, and I’m so super glad I got what I asked for (to be expected)!!!

To start: I love the bag, it’s going to be great to use when I go to the grocery store for little things since I have a place to store my stim stuff. :)

The pumpkin ball is much softer and has wAy more give than the pictures made it seem and I’m super happy with it. It’s definitely going on my computer desk.

The monster squishy is also awesome and super cute, assuring me that I would love any other slow-rise squishy i may buy in the future. Also going on my desk.

The little maze came apart in shipment, but I managed to find the ball in the box and put t back together no problem. I love the little cat button - it’s going on my lanyard for work. And the cat plush is a great stim not only for but for my partner too who also gets lost for periods at a time just flipping the sequins back and forth.

The bat chewy necklace is a great replacement for the one I bought back in college like. Four years ago.

The splats make me a little nervous as far as possibly popping, but the little ghost’s face make me smile, so its all good. The skeleton keychain is going to my partner, and the bendy alien is staying with me.

To wrap it all up, the stickers are adorable and I love the “just keep stimming” bracelet.

Thanks @stimtastic for great quality, and the fabulous value in the Halloween grab bag!!
