Character Maps of the Triangle Love among Duck, Prince and Rue

Here are two character maps of the triangle love among Duck (Princess Tutu), Prince Mytho and Rue (Princess Kraehe). I attempted to analyze the triangle love via Nutcracker (original story & ballet), Swan Lake (ballet) and Siegfried of The Ring of the Nibelung (Opera). I drew these charts for submitting to the 20th anniversary Autumn events (Sep. 25th) held by Princess Tutu staff on September 17 2022. And I decided to post them on Tumblr and my blogger.

Kinkan (Golden Krone in english version), the town in Princess Tutu, was highly inspired by Nördlingen in Germany but not only. Here are the comparisons between anime scenery and real places:

The gate to the dance school is very similar to the gate of Munich:

Kinkan dance school was inspired by the Hospital of the Holy Ghost in Nuremberg:

The swan fountain can be seen in Hohenschwangau castle:

The triple archway in the background of the end scene with Mytho and Rue is very similar to the one in the singers room in Neuschwanstein castle

The curtain in the opening is identical to the one of the Mariinski Theater of Saint Petersburgh

Drosselmeyer’s clock is the one from The Nutcracker ballet (at least in some versions, an owl is represented)

Part 7. Whew! There are a lot of angry ballerinas in Akt 16, with only a few seconds of screentime each. I matched them to some common variations in the competitive ballet circuit, but these are really just my best guesses. I’d love to hear other suggestions, if anyone else has any ideas.

Here’s the cover of the Princess Tutu’s manga in Traditional Chinese version in Taiwan.

I asked some fans who had the English version to make sure whether the English version included interviews in the end of the both volumes. And the answer is YES.

I know lots of people (including fans here) getting confused of the manga in plot, character settings etc. If you want to gain some answers, you could read the interviews in the end of the both volumes.

1st volume’s interviews: 

  • the director of animation, Junichi Sato
  • Japanese voice actress of Duck, Nanae Katō
  • the author of the manga, Mizuo Shinonome

2nd volume’s interviews:

  • the director of animation, Junichi Sato
  • Japanese voice actor of Mytho, Naoki Yanagi
  • the author of the manga, Mizuo Shinonome

* I don’t defend the manga. I only consider the manga a relating official information to help me understand the project of Princess Tutu.

Additional information:

  1. The anime was first-broadcast from August 16, 2002 to May 23, 2003.
  2. The manga was serialized from October 2002 to July 2003 on a Japanese magazine called  “Champion Red (チャンピオンRED)”.
  3. The author of the manga, Mizuo Shinonome, was not the staff of the anime Princess Tutu, like the author of the manga of Revolutionary Girl Utena, Chiho Saito, who was also the staff of Revolutionary Girl Utena .

This is how I understand:

  1. The manga was serialized during the first-broadcast of the anime Princess Tutu and Mizuo Shinonome didn’t gain enough information of the anime.
  2. Mizuo was not the staff of the anime, so she couldn’t know the details of Princess Tutu, especially the secrets and plots behind the characters and The Prince and the Raven.
  3. There would be a risk to spoil the plots or settings that hadn’t been broadcast in anime if the manga spoiled first.
  4. The ideas of Princess Tutu is definitely difficult to express even in anime.
  5. I learned that they didn’t have enough budgets and time to do the anime. If you consider how the Prince thanks to Duck in episode 25 being rough or not good enough, well, that’s the evidence.
  6. So, the production of Princess Tutu might not have enough budgets for the manga. And the manga might be only a propaganda of the anime. If they want someone to tell a better story than the manga, they have to pay more and examine the manga first before it is serialized.
  7. About the last name of Rue and Duck, they were used in the early project but taken away in the anime. I knew it because I read the early project in Princess Tutu’s small exhibition in April 2018. (They translated the project to English to look for potential foreign partners to do the anime) But I don’t know why they gave Mizuo Rue and Duck’s first name.

After reading @nocturnal-impala​’s feedback (https://nocturnal-impala.tumblr.com/post/621459881218736128/ ), I think she has some good points and I haven’t thought deeply before because I only consider the manga an additional official information of the anime. Perhaps I was too blind to feel awfully disappointed after I read the manga.

P.S. About the time problem, the director Sato admitted that  "we only recorded with the anime on episode 2." (seiyuu= Japanese voicers)
