like if you were a “pokemon fan” what does that mean? do you play the games? do you like the anime? do you like pokemon go? do you like the card games? do you like the toys? do you just like pikachu and dont care about anything else? pokemon i dont think has the level of division like MLP does (gen preference aside) but my point is you can have a very different experience with a single franchise depending on how you prefer to engage with it
i guess a reason pokemon isn’t as divided as mlp is because they never do a hard reboot, they just add on to what already exists. people may not like swsh or whatever, but swsh existing doesn’t take over the entire franchise. pikachu and all the kanto pokemon are still there, the other pokemon are always going to be present. even with black and white where it was more reboot-y, it didn’t “take over”. when MLP reboots it changes EVERYTHING which can cause division. it’s very likely we will never see any previous ponies be mentioned ever again. so if you like a certain character, you have to stick with the generation they came from
swsh also had the pokedex fiasco but like.. that doesn’t matter? lol the pokemon still exist. they still make merchandise and exist in other games. until the pokemon company hits the reset button (which they wont), pokemon is just gonna keep going and going. we’re about to hit 1000 pokemon soon. meanwhile mlp is like… when a gen ends its DONE. some characters carry over, but when was the last time we had seen port-o-bella? 2003. baby graffiti? 1987. long forgotten by their own company. g1 and g4 fare better in terms of bringing back characters for merch but obscure picks are out, g3 is out aside from like, rainbow dash and pinkie pie, g2? forget about it
As Per My Last Post...2!
if we were to apply the logic that “mlp is a cartoon” like bronies often do, and we interpreted every small style change as a gen, that means midnight castle and catrina were g1, mlp movie and mlpnf were g2, tales was g3, g2 was g4, g3 was g5, g3.5, was g6, g4 was g7, 2017 movie was g8, PL was g9, so, logically, we’re on G10 now with “a new generation”. because tales was g2. you might be able to split up g3 even more with the quality difference between free media releases and the DVDs, and then again with core 7, finally with G3.5
bronies want to classify tales as g2 because “g1 already had a cartoon” i guess? i do NOT understand their logic when tales LOOKS like g1 and was airing while g1 was still in production. tales was what, 1991? 1992? g2 was 1997!!!!! but anyway where i was going with this is if every gen only gets ONE piece of media, that means every time the media changes slightly, its a new gen
even if its a SLIGHT difference. so i was wondering what the FUCK is going on with the littlest petshop sphere. why the fuck is it divided up into SIX GENERATIONS. and WHY DOESNT IT EVEN INCLUDE THE FIRST ITERATION OF LPS?? is 90s lps like “gen zero” or something ???
“g2″ of lps uses the same exact moulds as “g1″ (g1 being the 2005 reboot) lps, which is something MLP wouldn’t classify as a new gen. all that’s difference is the style? “g1″ lps is more natural while “g2″ lps has more fantasy markings? funky eyes and flowers everywhere. it’s more of a “phase” than a full-on reboot imo.
then you have “g3″ lps which gets rid of the funky eyes and goes back to being... like g1? same exact moulds.
there are some “g2isms” here and there, SOME releases get patterns but not all, SOME releases have funky eyes but not all, its overall very.. g1
like these are such minuscule changes to the brand compared to “g4″
which is yes, THIS is a reboot. THIS is a new generation. there has been a COMPLETE overhaul here. new moulds, new style.
i would consider “g5″ to be a new generation too. its completely different from g4. not only is the style changed, but also they’re giving each animal full first and last names, these are sort of “characters” now instead of just being an animal with a number attached to it.
“g6″ i would also consider a new generation. the style again has changed, but they’re keeping the concept of naming each “character”. the eyes again are visibly different, but when you have 3 gens that are the same thing with different paintjobs, that doesn’t mean much. the style of the moulds are different from the other gens as well, they’re very round and very.. “playskool” lol
so like whats the deal with this naming scheme, was it determined early on and now its too late to change it? i dont know how you’d split up g1-g3 but they’re so minuscule in style. like yeah you can tell the difference between g1 and g2 but g3 is pretty similar to g1, which i guess you would split it up from g2 which was “so different”, so it would HAVE to go to “g3, because youre moving forward, you can’t add on to “g1″. no qualms with how the other gens are split up. they’re very distinct from each other
like during the “favourite friends” phase of g3 they were toying with TAF ponies like winter minty and the 25th anniversary core 7 releases, painting clothes on ponies instead of having accessories, etc, why aren’t those classified like... g4 lol, it’s a SLIGHT difference in design philosophy, no? just like how g2 lps also had the same exact moulds, it’s just different paint.. ??
gens categorized... by paint ????? instead of moulds??? PAINT ??
