like if you were a “pokemon fan” what does that mean? do you play the games? do you like the anime? do you like pokemon go? do you like the card games? do you like the toys? do you just like pikachu and dont care about anything else? pokemon i dont think has the level of division like MLP does (gen preference aside) but my point is you can have a very different experience with a single franchise depending on how you prefer to engage with it

i guess a reason pokemon isn’t as divided as mlp is because they never do a hard reboot, they just add on to what already exists. people may not like swsh or whatever, but swsh existing doesn’t take over the entire franchise. pikachu and all the kanto pokemon are still there, the other pokemon are always going to be present. even with black and white where it was more reboot-y, it didn’t “take over”. when MLP reboots it changes EVERYTHING which can cause division. it’s very likely we will never see any previous ponies be mentioned ever again. so if you like a certain character, you have to stick with the generation they came from

swsh also had the pokedex fiasco but like.. that doesn’t matter? lol the pokemon still exist. they still make merchandise and exist in other games. until the pokemon company hits the reset button (which they wont), pokemon is just gonna keep going and going. we’re about to hit 1000 pokemon soon. meanwhile mlp is like… when a gen ends its DONE. some characters carry over, but when was the last time we had seen port-o-bella? 2003. baby graffiti? 1987. long forgotten by their own company. g1 and g4 fare better in terms of bringing back characters for merch but obscure picks are out, g3 is out aside from like, rainbow dash and pinkie pie, g2? forget about it

As Per My Last Post...2!

if we were to apply the logic that “mlp is a cartoon” like bronies often do, and we interpreted every small style change as a gen, that means midnight castle and catrina were g1, mlp movie and mlpnf were g2, tales was g3, g2 was g4, g3 was g5, g3.5, was g6, g4 was g7, 2017 movie was g8, PL was g9, so, logically, we’re on G10 now with “a new generation”. because tales was g2. you might be able to split up g3 even more with the quality difference between free media releases and the DVDs, and then again with core 7, finally with G3.5

bronies want to classify tales as g2 because “g1 already had a cartoon” i guess? i do NOT understand their logic when tales LOOKS like g1 and was airing while g1 was still in production. tales was what, 1991? 1992? g2 was 1997!!!!! but anyway where i was going with this is if every gen only gets ONE piece of media, that means every time the media changes slightly, its a new gen

even if its a SLIGHT difference. so i was wondering what the FUCK is going on with the littlest petshop sphere. why the fuck is it divided up into SIX GENERATIONS. and WHY DOESNT IT EVEN INCLUDE THE FIRST ITERATION OF LPS?? is 90s lps like “gen zero” or something ???

“g2″ of lps uses the same exact moulds as “g1″ (g1 being the 2005 reboot) lps, which is something MLP wouldn’t classify as a new gen. all that’s difference is the style? “g1″ lps is more natural while “g2″ lps has more fantasy markings? funky eyes and flowers everywhere. it’s more of a “phase” than a full-on reboot imo.

then you have “g3″ lps which gets rid of the funky eyes and goes back to being... like g1? same exact moulds.

image

there are some “g2isms” here and there, SOME releases get patterns but not all, SOME releases have funky eyes but not all, its overall very.. g1

image

like these are such minuscule changes to the brand compared to “g4″

image

which is yes, THIS is a reboot. THIS is a new generation. there has been a COMPLETE overhaul here. new moulds, new style.

image

i would consider “g5″ to be a new generation too. its completely different from g4. not only is the style changed, but also they’re giving each animal full first and last names, these are sort of “characters” now instead of just being an animal with a number attached to it.

image

“g6″ i would also consider a new generation. the style again has changed, but they’re keeping the concept of naming each “character”. the eyes again are visibly different, but when you have 3 gens that are the same thing with different paintjobs, that doesn’t mean much. the style of the moulds are different from the other gens as well, they’re very round and very.. “playskool” lol

so like whats the deal with this naming scheme, was it determined early on and now its too late to change it? i dont know how you’d split up g1-g3 but they’re so minuscule in style. like yeah you can tell the difference between g1 and g2 but g3 is pretty similar to g1, which i guess you would split it up from g2 which was “so different”, so it would HAVE to go to “g3, because youre moving forward, you can’t add on to “g1″. no qualms with how the other gens are split up. they’re very distinct from each other

like during the “favourite friends” phase of g3 they were toying with TAF ponies like winter minty and the 25th anniversary core 7 releases, painting clothes on ponies instead of having accessories, etc, why aren’t those classified like... g4 lol, it’s a SLIGHT difference in design philosophy, no? just like how g2 lps also had the same exact moulds, it’s just different paint.. ??

gens categorized... by paint ????? instead of moulds??? PAINT ??

Reblog this if you think that the Brony fandom and the MLP fandom are two seperate fandoms.

I wanna test something.

definitely. bronies tend to only care about FIM and if they do show interest in the rest of the generations its almost always through a lense of "how does this relate to g4".

Another big difference is bronies focus on the media of MLP.  Even if they like other gens, it’s always framed as “MLP & Friends actually had some fun lore” or “watching G3 is like comfort food.”

Whereas “general” MLP collectors are like “Yeah, the cartoons and comics are nice, but also who caaares, gimme the horse toys with the high quality hair.”

people have warmed up to g5, but its still a continuation of g4, therefore, it still holds bronies’ attention. it’s g4 2

g1 is probably the most brony-respected gen after g4 (not counting g5 for it being g4 2) since it has ““the original mane 6″“ with firefly, something something lauren faust. so it still has connection with g4

g3 has little connection with g4 aside from pony names, no reason to care about it. also it’s Girl and Pink (bad and Cooties). no reason to care about g2 either.

...which was tales! tales is g2. except it isn’t, because if we were to apply the logic that “mlp is a cartoon” like bronies often do, and we interpreted every small style change as a gen, that means midnight castle and catrina were g1, mlp movie and mlpnf were g2, tales was g3, g2 was g4, g3 was g5, g3.5, was g6, g4 was g7, 2017 movie was g8, PL was g9, so, logically, we’re on G10 now with “a new generation”. because tales was g2. you might be able to split up g3 even more with the quality difference between free media releases and the DVDs, and then again with core 7, finally with G3.5

a gen of MLP consists of the entirety of MLP within a span of years, a “generation”. toys, marketing, cartoons, other media such as books and games, etc. if you were a kid growing up and liked MLP there’s a chance you also had dinnerware, clothes, bedding, washcloths, had an MLP themed birthday party, whatever. in a way MLP could be like pokemon where theres multiple ways to enjoy it. i think you could be an “MLP fan” while not collecting the toys... you can consume all the MLP-related media, have an interest, have respect for it, without owning anything physically. whereas “bronies”/g4 fans/g4 purists tend to only like g4/g5. their knowledge of past gens tends to be “firefly was the mane character of g1″ and “pinkie pie was in g3″ and thats about it. no interest in other gens, no desire to learn about anything else in it. they just care about the modern cartoons

so then you might be able to split up MLP even further, with “collectors” being another demographic. “MLP collector” being different from say, a “brony collector” as bronies often do NOT buy hasbro products, rather focus on 3rd party things like funkos, kotobukiya, and ESPECIALLY fan-made stuff. an “MLP collector” could do those things of course but they focus on hasbro-made products such as the brushable ponies, which bronies would rarely touch. an “MLP collector” could also hypothetically have no interest in the characters, world, or other media of MLP. it could simply just be “i found these little horses at the flea market, aren’t they cute, i think i’ll get more”.

you also have fans that have never ever ever watched FiM, have no interest in doing so, have no interest in MLP as a franchise at ALL but still likes the brony fandom. there are people who have never consumed official MLP content but still listens to brony music, looks at G4 fanart (may or may not include porn), and might even have a ponysona or OC. they like brony culture more than the franchise itself. not sure what to call these guys but theyre definitely more “brony” aligned.

i mentioned “g4 purists” previously which yes, there are fans that firmly believe every gen that isnt g4 sucks, you still get people crying about g5 and saying “this isnt MY mlp MY mlp has twilight sparkle. make season 10 or im killing everyone in this room and then myself”, likewise, there are genwunners within mlp as well, who, at best, have no interest in other gens and at worst, thinks mlp should’ve ended in the 90s and that hasbro is actively killing the franchise with more installments. everyone has their favourite gen or preferences to style of pony, but some people skew more towards one gen versus another, so you could say “g4 fan” or “g1 fan”. for me, i feel like the term “MLP fan” is more universal and more tolerant. like you HAVE to like mlp in some shape or form for every gen, as you like “my little pony” and my little pony is always changing. even if you're critical g4.5 or 3.5, etc, you aren’t trying to erase its existence and you’re staying on board like “yeah i’ll pass on this gen. i’m not feeling it. maybe there will be something to look forward to later” compared to “hasbro is KILLING my little pony i HATE hasbro i HATE my little pony die die die die grrrrr”

we tend to define “brony” as “man who only likes FiM and nothing else and over analyzes FiM lore and *rainbow dash jar*” but technically a “brony” is just a fan of MLP. for some people this is interchangeable and people will choose to identify as a brony/pegasister to this day despite everything. i’m not as appalled by the term as a lot of people are (though i still understand its.... Impact) since i really liked the early brony fandom and at one point ID’d as a pegasister. 2011 was fun! but also as someone who was in that space, i can also say that yes, its VASTLY different to how oldschool MLP fans consume content. brony culture is about the TV show and memes surrounding it, fan-driven, but in a way that’s still, like... based in canon? analysis of lore and world building and stuff, stuff that already exists in canon. old MLP doesn’t have much aside from giving you the characters, so from there, you’re just playing dollhouse, you can do whatever you want with whoever you want. you can make up whatever you want and you can’t be wrong. in the FiM fandom there are definitely still “OCs in an original world” and fics focusing on random side-characters like the way an oldschool MLP fan would write (in the sense that a random background character in FiM has as much depth as a brony-termed “hasbrOC”, aka toy-only characters, aka, the way MLP always was prior to g4), so there’s overlap between the two there (sorry if this paragraph is sloppy it was hard to articulate lol)

if you want to be ABSOLUTELY TECHNICAL from a very vague outsider perspective, anyone who likes MLP in any way can be considered to be an “mlp fan” however, MLP is a franchise that reboots and reinvents itself every few years and since g4, people have been engaged in a variety of different ways which results in a vastly different experience, person to person.

like if you were a “pokemon fan” what does that mean? do you play the games? do you like the anime? do you like pokemon go? do you like the card games? do you like the toys? do you just like pikachu and dont care about anything else? pokemon i dont think has the level of division like MLP does (gen preference aside) but my point is you can have a very different experience with a single franchise depending on how you prefer to engage with it

edit: OP i was going through the notes and a lot of people seem to be on the same page of “bronies are MLP fans but MLP fans arent bronies”, everyone else gave a simple answer meanwhile here i am writing an essay LMAO not necessarily giving you a simple answer poll-style like you may have intended but rather like... things i know based on experience as to “why” people feel this way

Speaking of shelf space, how are your guys’ Targets doing for G5 MLP?

My Target has shockingly little shelf space devoted to them. They have a spot for the 3″ poseables (like Zipp with skateboard) and a space which “Rainbow Reveal” 6″ Sunny and the poseable playsets (like Izzy’s critter creation set) have to SHARE, which I’ve never seen before.  Like the 6″ Sunny and the poseable playsets are in the exact same “slot”.

On Saturday I was near another Target so I checked it out and I couldn’t find any shelf space devoted to G5s.

It’s very weird because Hasbro has been doing a huge push for the G5 movie, which was in the top ten Netflix shows for like two weeks.

not tarjay since we dont have one, but walmart’s pony section is pitiful. it was decent around august, but now its down to nothing but sunny plushes, styling pipp and styling zipp.

isn’t it weird/sad? this is a huge new generation with a big shiny cgi movie and no toys came out for it. along with the mane 6, the 2017 movie got:

  • a castle playset
  • a carousel recolour playset
  • a smaller playset (the seapony jail)
  • FiM collection canterlot castle
  • brushable of skystar in seapony forme AND hippogriff forme
  • 3″ figure of novo
  • various brushables of tempest shadow as well as a BAB of her
  • various brushables of songbird serenade as well as a BAB of her
  • blablabla parrots
  • blablabla storm king
  • that one hippogriff guy that wasn’t even in the movie
  • capper’s here too i guess
  • characters such as big mac and muffins in the new moulds
  • baby seaponies
  • baby hippogriffs

what does g5 have? uh.. sunny starscout… sunny starscout… izzy.. izzy… pipp…

  • 3″ poseables with molded hair of haven, ruddy sparks, shuttersnap, dazzlefeather, and zoom zephyrwing, but no brushables
  • 6″ “brushable” of sprout, the main villain, and i think this is the only piece of merch we even have of him atm, also only his tail is brushable
  • impossible to find hitch, the only one really available in stores was the walmart exclusive and walmart doesn’t carry that anymore. the single hitches are very hard to find
  • single brushables in general are hard to find, and unless you got that walmart exclusive with the mane 5, you don’t have brushables
  • that set with pinkie and twilight and rainbow dash brushables, but you only get pipp, izzy, and sunny in that set. so if you need a 3″ zipp brushable, you’re SOL*
  • it’s just the mane 5 and by mane 5 i mean just sunny and izzy
  • zipp has been the best selling pony over here in terms of plush and no one wants sunny and izzy
  • we got ONE playset
  • argyle and phyllis are ponylife recolours, no 3″ figures
  • alphabittle doesn’t have merch at all im pretty sure
  • notice the 2017 movie list has New Exciting things that aren’t just mane 6 and everything ive listed here is just mane 5, the only saving grace is that amazon-exclusive gala set with haven and co

*i HAVE seen the single brushables at HEB, and ive seen the moulded mane singles (not crystal adventure, the nonposeable ones) at kroger. you have to look in weird places and you’re probably not going to be able to find them bc ive heard no one else having such luck

better luck for year 2?

i also recognize supply has been a pain lately but i feel like even if everything was normal we still wouldn’t have anything. i feel like this is all hasbro was going to put out no matter what, this small variety of sunny and izzy and No One Else. had everything been normal, it just would’ve been better stocked i think. still no argyle or sprout or anyone that isnt sunny and izzy and maybe pipp

Anyone who worked at Target around 2017 has ptsd from having to rezone this twice a shift

KEEPER OF THE LEGENDARY SONGBIRD THAT NO ONE WANTED TO FUCKING BUY

the target here had her for over two years. they got rid of the box they displayed the other ponies in but left her. she was by herself for two fucking years in the pony section along with the capper and rarity sets that gathered dust. then covid happened and i haven’t been to target since so i’d like to imagine she’s finally gone. let her be free

you can tell this mould was made for G4s bc there’s so much forehead. all that room was supposed to be for their freak basketball size eyeballs

i hope its never explained how ponies in g5 can just hold things. its so funny i miss horses being able to pick up and hold things in their hooves like tales and g3. its even better that they dont grow "thumbs" or "mitten hands" or anything its just tacked onto their flat hoof

may be controversial but must be said.

this is a pro-”early”/”backcard” g3 pinkie pie, anti-movie g3 pinkie pie blog

(obligatory disclaimer “hate” is a strong word and one i would use jokingly but in my sincere and honest opinion she is simply not enjoyable in the movies and has always been the weakest pony compared to minty or rainbow dash)

i put this out without saying the controversial part bc i was gonna “get back to it later” but havent found the time for it LOL

this extends to mintyxpinkie. >:) i dont like mintyxpinkie >:)

reasons: i was there when g3 launched. i got those ponies that summer of 2003. i had the books, i read the backcards. pinkie pie is characterized very differently in those than in the movies. pinkie was like... a kid. like the little sister to all the other ponies. i dont know how pony ages work, i dont know HOW much younger she was supposed to be, but in my mind she was the youngest. her backcard is about how she’s curious but cautious and wont do anything unless someone else does it first. “pony party” she comes off as kiddish, “pinkie pie’s spooky dream” she comes off as kiddish, “ponies on ice” she comes off as kiddish. there’s probably more books i can’t think of or havent read where she’s characterized similarly, but you get what i mean? she’s less mature than the other ponies. all of the other ponies are vaguely “adult” while she’s vaguely a “child”. and although nothing is canon, it’s still weird *to me* to ship pinkie and minty, based off of my own experience with the character

that said i also like this “backcard/book” version of her better, she has more of a purpose and is more interesting i think. she’s cute and endearing. in the movies whats her personality? ooh im pinkie pie look at me??????? ?? im pink????

i got a g3 cd. it has some pretty bad songs (unfortunately) on it. but it also has the entirety of “a charming birthday” on it. but just the audio. so im listening to it, right? without the visuals i just have the words to focus on. so razzaroo’s introducing all the celebration ponies one by one, she gets to pinkie pie last. as a kid i thought, oh, pinkie is last bc she’s the youngest. she might get left out a lot of the time or forgotten about bc of her age. and razz goes on (going off of memory for this quote here since i watched this ALL the time as a kid):

“Pinkie Pie knows a lot about a lot of things. On her birthday, she gave us a lesson on how to properly blow up and tie a balloon. A good tip, but since we already knew how, we pretended we didn’t. After all, it was her birthday!”

and of course as a kid i thought oh, she’s just a little kid showing off things she knows how to do, and the adults are humouring her. and thats just what i thought up until i listened to this. i put this into perspective of pinkie’s characterization in movies after this one, as well as what she says next.

pinkie is one of the only ones who has any sense in this movie, until its convenient that she doesn’t. she’s the first one besides razz to say “hey isnt it stupid that we’re all giving kimono bracelets all at once” (again going off of memory for these quotes):

“Eight charm bracelets is, well.. it’s just a lot of charm bracelets... ...When you add my balloon charm bracelet, to me, that adds up to eight. And if Kimono gets eight charm bracelets, which one is she gonna wear first? ...We need to nip it in the bud... ...Right now we have to go ask the wisest pony in the land... ...I’d hate to spoil the fun, but KIMONO is the wisest pony in the land.”

she comes off as kind of “the boss”, she talks with so much Authority here. and she DOES end up becoming “the boss”, or i guess, “the leader” later down the road. couple that with her demonstration on “how to blow up and tie a balloon”, something fairly simple to fellow adults, something everyone at the party clearly knew how to do. pinkiesplaining??? ooh im pinkie pie you’re doing it all wrong let ME show you how its done. like whenever the ponies have a problem, like in the ladybug short, everyones like oh boohoo we’re incompetent please pinkie pie please save us, youre so smart and cool and so fucking pink, and pinkie pies ok let me squink ^_^ she even has her own terminology that everyone expects to know. to make things worse shes voiced by janyse jaud and has the same exact voice as sarah from ed edd n eddy, which makes her sound especially bratty (at least it did to me when i was a kid since ed edd n eddy was my favourite cartoon along with spongebob at the time)

yet another reason not to respect movie pinkie.... (another obligatory disclaimer that the above paragraph is exaggerated for comedic effect. i dont HATE pinkie, i dont ACTUALLY think shes a douchebag but she’s just... SO boring as a character. she has nothing going on)

this is a pro-”early”/”backcard” g3 pinkie pie, anti-movie g3 pinkie pie blog

this is also a pro mintyxrazzaroo, mintyxkimono blog. minty deserves better, she needs to be with someone who is either not a child nor whatever movie!pinkie has going on. plus minty is Weird and needs to be paired up with a straightman (comedy term) for optimal results

another thought, since i dont want to make another post and its related, re: pinkie’s age (headcanon time). if she’s the youngest in the group and is regularly left out of stuff, i think that’s where the “core 7″ comes into play. pinkie pie just goes out and plays with friends her own age. rainbow dash messes things up a bit but you could make her be a “mentor” of the group or whatever, since she IS canonically the eldest in the group as of g3.5.
