I think I’ve said it plenty of times already but Mortal Kombat 11 is a disappointment to me – and many others. To be honest, in order for me to ever want to purchase another MK game, NRS has to REALLY impress me. They can fix Sindel in MK12 but that STILL isn’t enough for me to buy it–definitely not for $60. Granted, fucking up Sindel was definitely the last straw for me with this game, but there are plenty of other problems that needed fixed.
What is probably most frustrating is that NRS can CLEARLY do better. This might be the worst they’ve done in regards to Mortal Kombat in my opinion. It’s a disaster, and it seems like it just gets worse as DLCs get added.
I am serious: I’m not impressed. I’ve very disappointed and regret buying the game. You have to respect your creations because if you don’t, then who will? You can’t develop characters and stories over time then just expect everyone to be ok when you change things up for the worst reasons.
I mean COME ON:
- Shao Kahn killed Jerrod, but then it was D’vorah, but then it was Sindel. This is blatantly bad writing! It’s lazy!
- Not to mention trying to understand both Kabals in story mode just….breaks my brain. His retcons make no sense.
- And again, why does Jacqui have such a depressing tower ending??? Kano gets a good tower ending. Sindel gets a good tower ending. Everyone gets a good tower ending except Jacqui who ironically gets a lot of unnecessary hate from racist, misogynistic fans. It’s almost like NRS gave her an ending where she is written out of the timeline on purpose just to appease these people.
- Little inconsistencies and random inexplicable thing everywhere that we’re just supposed to ignore/accept:
- Kotal and Jade are a cute couple but….why? Why are they together? This was shoehorned into MK11′s story for sure. Not sure why it had to be there? I mean…couldn’t they have thought of a better plot point or explained their relationship more efficiently?
- Erron Black is now more of a stereotypical cowboy than an actual gunslinger and mysterious mercenary. Not to mention his odd OOC dialogues with Sindel and in Baraka’s tower, it says Erron was hired by the tarkatans to hunt some animals for them, but he took HALF the payment and ran. THIS MAKES NO SENSE, NRS! For such a an easy job, even if he thought it was below him, you think he’s just going to take HALF the pay? What the fuck is wrong with you guys?
- Johnny Cage is kind of a mess in some ways with his dialogue in his intros. I feel like NRS isn’t portraying him as he should be by giving him both lines for his younger self and for his older self. It’s weird when you have an older Johnny skin and he says shit he would have only said when he was younger. It’s off-putting.
- Johnny and Sonya getting back together without any trouble despite how she was never there for Cassie, and Johnny was upset about this. He couldn’t stand to see Cassie grow up without a mother to be there for her. But for some reason, now that Cassie is grown up, everything’s ok? Sonya doesn’t need to make up for lost time or prove herself to be a good mom. She just…gets welcomed back? I don’t think so.
- Kabal had no purpose in the story, especially his past self. He could have been excluded and the story would have been fine. Same with Erron. His present self was barely in the game and we never saw him interact with his past self. In fact, it’s almost like NRS forgot to deal with present Erron and just threw him in at random times when they remembered.
- D’Vorah kills present Hanzo. Like, seriously? She kills Mileena, who doesn’t return to MK11 but Baraka does, and then she kills Hanzo? What is this shit? And with how poorly NRS and Ed Boon treat Mileena fans, baiting them with rumors of her return just to let them down, I think this exclusion of her in MK11 was deliberate. Talk about childish.
- A lot of the dialogue is sloppy for the intros: sometimes it’s just poorly written, there are inconsistencies, OOC comments…if you look at the MKX intros, they’re much better: fun, engaging, character-driven, entertaining….they seem to have had some effort put into them. In Mk11, the intros are just garbage at times.
Am I missing something? I’m sure I am but that’s the most of it.
Fans are at least writing better headcanons, drabbles and fan fics for MK than NRS is. In fact, NRS should just fire their current writers and hire the fans–people who KNOW what they’re doing. It’s ridiculous that we, the fans, have to fix NRS’ lazy mistakes and terrible retcons. We didn’t make these characters, so why the hell are we more responsible with them than NRS is?
I do hope that, at the very least, people are still enjoying the Erron content I put out there. I know some people were definitely turned off by his MK11 self, and I was very upset for a short time after the Sindel stuff was released (and I still kind of am sometimes), but I do try to portray him as he should/could be. I hope that maybe some Erron fans will start to like him again after seeing all these wonderful fan-made works out there!
Anyway, I’m off to bed. Uggggh. I am glad I got Nightwolf at least. Now I don’t need to bother with the game at all except to open it up and get screenshots in “Fashion Week Mode.”
