Dan wasn’t a morning person. He just didn’t understand the bizarre people who thought leaving the warmth and comfort of your bed just to be greeted with the harsh coldness of the air around you was enjoyable. If he could get away with it, Dan would spend the whole day laying in bed, ignoring all his responsibilities. He was good at that. But today, Dan knew, was different. He couldn’t spend all day in bed because it was an important day, not necessarily for him, but for one of his closest friends: Chris. PJ - his other closest friend, and Chris’ partner - had decided to throw Chris a surprise birthday party, and he needed Dan to help organise the finishing touches. Dan groaned at the sound of his alarm clock. He reached for the bedside table, hopelessly searching for the snooze button on his phone. He just wanted a few more minutes of sleep. Unable to find his phone with his eyes closed, Dan sighed and opened his eyes, squinting at the harsh, white light that streamed through his black curtains.
“Fuck.” Dan muttered under his breath. The time on his phone read 12:00pm, him and PJ had arranged to meet at the station in Brighton at 12:30. There was no way he would get there in time; it taking over an hour to travel there. He quickly dialled PJ’s number.
“Don’t tell me you’re going to be late, Dan” was PJ’s immediate response to Dan’s call.
“Uh..why would you think that? I’m on the train now.” Dan was always late, so lying to give himself more time had become his second talent. After sleeping. “I just thought I’d ask if you wanted me to pick up the cake on my own, and you can go home to Chris to make sure Chris isn’t suspicious.”
“Dan…” PJ wasn’t convinced.
“It’s a great plan!”
“Okay. But don’t be late.” PJ replied after a long pause.
“Don’t worry, I should be there in a bit, Bye!” Dan quickly hung up and scrambled off his bed. Half an hour later, he was at the train station, waiting for the next train to Brighton. The day so far had been pretty crap to say the least. He had run out of milk. The hot water wasn’t working and, on the bus to the station, the lady sitting next to Dan seemed to be having a rather serious, and loud, break up over the phone. On top of that, his hair was a mess; he couldn’t straighten out his hobbit hair properly, leaving wisps of curls annoyingly framing his face.
Dan was pretty annoyed at himself for being late. He didn’t want PJ to be upset and to put all his hard work to waste. This was the first birthday that PJ and Chris would celebrate as an official couple. They had met 2 years ago, when Dan and PJ were at the cinema. It was all a coincidence, and if it had been anybody else nothing would have come out of it, but Chris and PJ were soulmates.
There was a new movie released, starring Jennifer Lawrence, so of course Dan and PJ were going to watch it. During the movie though, PJ’s bladder decided it was full and needed to be emptied. Immediately. It was all rather funny to Dan. Him and PJ were incredibly awkward people, and disturbing a whole room of people to get up to go to the toilet was something neither of them could do without turning an alarming shade of scarlet. It didn’t help that they were obnoxiously tall either. However, it was an emergency and PJ soon plucked up the courage to ask the only person next to him - a man about his age - to excuse him. However, it didn’t work. You could see PJ struggling to make any sort of sound leave his mouth. PJ was confused and turned back to Dan.
“Why can’t I speak?” He had whispered to Dan, his ability to speak restored. Dan, engrossed into the movie, and now slightly annoyed at PJ, just told PJ to stop being a donut and go.
“No, Dan. Seriously” The tone of PJ’s voice has compelled Dan to listen properly. “I can’t talk to him.”
The two of them soon realised the situation and their eyes widened. Dan tapped the young man causing him to turn to PJ in frustration. He opened his mouth to tell him to shut up but, again, no words came out.
Of course, they were soul mates and blah blah. They began to meet each other regularly and were now officially together. Dan was introduced to the whole idea of soulmates when he was just 6. He was at school and two of the children, a cute blonde girl and a small boy, weren’t able to talk to each other. The teachers had to explain to the entire class the situation. They were soulmates, and soulmates lose the ability to talk when they talk to each other. They would only be able to start talking to each other again after they share their first kiss.
Dan arrived at Brighton an hour after boarding his train, needless to say, he was very late. So, as he walked into the cake shop where PJ ordered the cake from, he dialled in PJ’s number and put the phone to his ear. PJ answered very quickly.
“Hey, PJ” Dan greeted.
“Hi, Dan” The connection in the cake shop was actually spectacular. It was as if PJ was standing right behind him.
“Sorry to say this, but the cake shop hadn’t finished off the cake,” Dan played the second part of plan ‘don’t disappoint PJ’. “So I had to wait for them to do so. It should be ready in a couple of minutes.”
“Oh. Really?” There was something different in PJ’s tone. It was almost mocking, and not in a funny way. It put Dan on edge, making him shuffle his feet.
“Uh…yeah. Really.” Dan lied through his teeth.
“Are you sure?” PJ countered. This just made Dan plain frustrated.
“Yes, PJ, I’m very sure. In fact I-” Dan was about to continue when he felt two taps on his shoulder. “One second PJ.” Dan said before turning around. “Do you mind, I’m on the-” He stopped, for, there in front of him, was PJ, looking very displeased indeed.
“You were saying?” He said, shaking his head.
“Fuck. Sorry PJ, I didn’t want to-”
“Disappoint me? Annoy me? Make me want to punch you in the face? Because, guess what, you’ve done all of those things.”
Dan knew then that he had been stupid. Today was such an important day for Chris, which meant it was a big deal for PJ, and PJ had put so much effort into making it perfect, only for Dan to come and ruin it.
“PJ, I’m so sorry. I was running late, and I didn’t want to have to tell you that. You were already so stressed.”
“You should’ve just told me, Dan. I would’ve collected the cake and you could have done the other stuff. But now, I’ve had to collect the cake, as well as doing everything else. I thought I’d come and help you, only to find you weren’t even here. Now we are behind schedule and I don’t know if we will get everything done before Chris gets suspicious. He is probably almost finished having a bath, so I better get home before he does. He doesn’t know I left.” PJ looked at Dan expectantly, which was bad for Dan as he had absolutely no idea what to do.
“Is-Is there anything else you want me to do?” Dan felt stupid even for asking, but he didn’t know what else to say.
“Not really. Frankly, I’d rather not speak to you for a while.” PJ said, before picking up the damned birthday cake, and leaving the store, leaving Dan alone to contemplate why he even decided to leave the bed this morning.
There was no point. He always ended up letting everyone down, no matter how hard he tried not to. It just never worked. He was useless and he should have stayed at home, it was best for everyone. Sometimes he’d think that there must be someone who didn’t think that he was a waste of space, but it just seemed less and less likely and that just made him feel like giving up. Even the most tiniest things, like being late to something, made Dan feel like crap, and, no matter how hard he thought about the insignificance of the problem in the vastness of the universe, it only made him feel worse. In the vastness of the universe, what effect would it actually have if he died? Practically none whatsoever. No one would care. Yes, they’d cry for a week, but they’d get over it. And it was these thoughts that Dan was absolutely engrossed in when he felt eyes on him.
Dan had just realised that he had had a full on argument in a public place. This wasn’t good. This wasn’t good at all. Dan was possibly the most awkward person on the planet and he had already lost too much of his dignity, he couldn’t afford to lose anymore. But yet, he had done it again. Angrily, Dan turned around to face the music. He was met with a pair of startling, ice blue eyes with flecks of green and yellow. The person who had seen him at one of his most embarrassing moments had jet black hair styled into a side fringe, a long, oval face and pale skin. Basically he was just hot, and one thing worse than being watched doing something embarrassing by someone is being watched doing something embarrassing by someone hot.
Dan felt his cheeks warm up as he walked out of the shop as quickly as his feet would allow. He needed to forget about this and forget about it fast, so he thought it was the time for some hot chocolate.
Was it a crime to walk into a coffee shop and not order coffee? Dan didn’t think so. He walked into his favourite coffee shop and up to the counter.
“Hey, Dan!” The girl at the counter greeted him, her blue eyes as friendly as they always were.
“Hi, Zoe. I could really do with a hot chocolate right now.” Dan replied, running his hand through his brown hair.
“Of course, but you’ll have to tell me what happened.” She says before she speedily got to work. In about 5 minutes Zoe was ready with a steaming cup of hot chocolate and handed it to Dan.
“Now, what mildly interesting thing has happened?” Zoe asked with a smile.
“Not ‘mildly interesting’ at all, actually. Not so strangely enough, intensely horrifying and cringeworthy.” Dan said after a sip of the sweet chocolatey drink in his hands.
“Damn, Daniel.”
“That was not appreciated.”
“Sorry. Kind of. Tell me what happened then.”
“There’s kind of no one to blame but me. I woke up late so I spun myself a web of lies and PJ found out and we kind of had an argument type-thing in the store and a really cute guy noticed and it’s totally embarrassing and I want to forget about it.”
There was a slight pause before Zoe spoke again.
“Shit. It’s worse when they’re hot.”
“So much worse.” Dan agreed. “Anyway, I think I’ll just sit alone in a booth and contemplate the flop that is my life. Again.” This made Zoe chuckle.
“Okay, Dan. Try not to think of it too much. I don’t want to have to splash water on your face to snap you back into reality. Again.” Dan shook his head at the memory before sliding off the stool he was sitting on and walked over to the more comfortable seats by the window.
Zoe had become accustomed to being the audience of the never-ending funny anecdotes Dan wanted to share so badly, but she couldn’t help but feel slightly sorry for her friend. He was a nice guy who had some crappy things happen to him. They had become friends since Dan moved to London as he’d frequently visit PJ and Chris, and stopping by the coffee shop had become a ritual, as Dan without a bit of caffeine in a day wasn’t a Dan you’d want to meet. Over the couple of years they had known each other, Zoe had grown worried of how long Dan would go without interacting with other humans, even though it was normal for such introverted people like Dan. Sometimes you just need someone to talk about what to have for dinner, or someone to play video games with, or someone just open up to on a daily basis, and Zoe was someone who learned this the hard way. She was so much happier now that she had Alfie in her life and she wanted the same for Dan.
So when he speed-walked over to her after the shop bell rang saying,
“Jesus on a fricking tricycle, Zoe, that’s him.”
She had a plan.
“You’re right, he is hot.” Zoe stated. “And fucking tall.” Dan definitely agreed with both statements. Blue-eyes could be as tall as Dan, and, standing at 6’ 3", Dan was tall.
“Life just hates me! I’m such an embrassment.” Dan said, panic clear in his voice. Many probably wouldn’t understand, but, no matter how often it happens, embarrassing yourself is a pretty huge deal. “What should I do?”
Zoe laughed. “Just go sit down, Dan. I’m sure it’ll handle itself.” She quietened down to a whisper as the hot stranger walked towards the counter. “I’m serving him next, I’ll tell you all about him.” Zoe winked, in an attempt to calm Dan down.
Dan nodded, and sighed before walking back to his booth, hot chocolate in hand.
“Hi! How was your morning?” Zoe asked casually, as she would to any other customer.
He looked a bit surprised and unaware of what to do. Kind of awkward. Kind of like Dan. The thought made her smile.
“Uh-I, it’s been a good day so far, thank you.” He nodded. Zoe almost laughed out loud. He was kind of adorable. The first customer to actually think about a causal question.
“And what would you like to have?”
“One Caramel Macchiato, please.”
“Coming right up.” She said chirpily, before he smiled and walked to a booth.
As she got to work, Zoe took some time to fully take in the stranger that had caused so much ruckus for Dan. He seemed like a nice man, perhaps not very mature for his age, but that would perfectly balance out Dan’s over-mature nature, and he might even change Dan for the better! Make him happier and more open. The thought made Zoe want to jump up at down.
Okay, so she might be getting slightly too excited, but she could see it, and would at least try to give it a shot.
As she placed the lid on the polystyrene cup, she grabbed a sharpie from the counter and scribbled a quick note on a piece of paper:
Hi. You have nice hair.
It had to seem like Dan had written it, so of course it had to be awkward and random, but something seemed missing. It needed a little extra. His drink was getting too cold, so Zoe quickly drew the first thing that came to mind. Cat Whiskers.
“One Caramel Macchiato.” Zoe called. His head jerked up, looking away from his phone screen, and he walked to the counter.
“Thanks.” He said, sliding a few coins her way.
“Someone wrote a message for you.” Zoe added before he could leave. Surprise entered his blue eyes, as he looked down at the square of paper with the black scrawl. He smiled as he saw the whiskers.
“Uh, who did this?” He asked. Zoe felt kind of silly for not giving him this vital piece of information, so instead of forming any words, she nodded in Dan’s direction. Blue-eyes instantly seemed to recognise Dan, and his smile grew a little wider. He turned back to Zoe.
“Could you give me some paper? I think I should return the favour.” He said, looking up at Zoe.
Zoe’s heart jumped. She’d done it! She’d done it!
“Uh-of course,” she quickly handed him the sharpie and another square of paper. She turned away and pretended to wipe the coffee machine, occasionally glancing over, trying to see what he was writing.
When he was done he handed back the sharpie and sheet of paper, and smiled before returning back to his booth and nestling in.
Of course Zoe couldn’t resist reading the note before giving it to Dan, but before she got a chance, Dan had speed-walked over to her.
“What was that little-big encounter you had with blue-eyes?” He whispered as soon as she was in hearing distance.
“Dan, why are you whispering? It’s pretty loud in here, he won’t be able to hear you.” She shook her head.
“Zoe.”
“Okay. He wrote you a note.” Zoe immediately noticed a sparkle in Dan’s eyes. One she had never seen before. “I wanted to read it, but you decided to come swanning in-HEY!” Zoe called out as Dan had snatched the note from her hands.
“I want to see it.” He mumbled, already reading the black scrawl of blue-eyes’ handwriting. Dan smiled at it:
Hey, I like your hair. >•
It was a bit random, Dan thought, but it was nice. He even drew cat whiskers at the bottom. Random, but nice. A small compliment from the man who had seen him at one of his lowest points. Actually, that was a lie. Dan had had many moments that were lower than that.
“What’s it say?!” Zoe snapped Dan out of his trance, leaning over. Dan automatically hid it into his chest.
“It just says that he likes my hair.” He didn’t know why he didn’t actually show Zoe, but it was something he wanted to keep to himself. Something private. Something special.
Dan had decided to stay with Zoe that night, so he could help her at the shop. Of course it was just so he could be a good friend and not because of any other…distractions.
“Dan. The floor isn’t going to sweep itself” Zoe giggled. It was the next day at Zoe’s shop, and Dan hadn’t realised he was staring outside the large shop windows instead of actually helping out.
“Uh-Sorry, I was just wondering if the windows needed wiping.” Dan replied quickly.
“Really? Because I think you’re waiting for someone.” Zoe said, handing the next customer their drink.
“Ugh. Alright. I’m waiting for blue-eyes.”
“I knew it.” Zoe said triumphantly.
“I really should’ve asked for his name before he left yesterday, because I don’t really think 'blue-eyes’ suits him.”
“Well, his eyes are blue,”
“Yeah, but they are kind of green and yellow too.”
“Wow. Somebody has been paying attention.” Zoe smiled as Dan’s cheeks flushed pink.
“Shut up, Zoe! You’re distracting me. The floor isn’t going to sweep itself.” Dan shook his head and felt the warmth in his cheeks intensify as he heard Zoe chuckling behind him. At that exact moment the chime of the bell above the door echoed in the coffee shop. It was blue-green-yellow eyes.
Dan immediately felt his heartbeat race in his chest, and he quickly looked down, constantly reminding himself that he had only met him once, so he should really calm down.
He heard him ordering his drink, and thought about the exchanging of notes. It seemed wrong to stop the one-day tradition so early, so when blue-green-yellow eyes sat down in a booth, Dan swiftly walked to Zoe at the counter.
“The paper and sharpie is near the cash machine.” Zoe immediately said from the coffee machine, a smile playing on her lips.
Dan didn’t have the patience to pretend that she was wrong. His first note to the mysterious hot guy read:
Hello again, I think I should ask you your name. I’m Dan. >•
The cat whiskers just sort of happened. He folded the note up and handed it to Zoe.
“Don’t read it.” He said.
“I’ll try not too..” She said playfully, before walking over to blue-green-yellow eyes. He watched as Zoe pointed at Dan and he locked eyes with the stranger. Dan felt so awkward so he just waved. The stranger smiled back before looking down at the note. He chuckled quietly, his hand over his mouth, as he realised that they hadn’t given each other their names.
Dan noticed his smile was kind of crooked, and went the opposite side to his hair. Under his black space coat he wore a bright blue and greeny plaid shirt. He had a very different aesthetic compared to Dan’s BLACK everything. Even his fringe was the opposite side to Dan’s brown fringe.
“Dan. You’re staring.” Zoe informed Dan.
“Uh-wha-okay.” Dan fumbled for words and turned back around. “I want a coffee now.” He said, quickly changing the subject.
“Okay, what do you want?”
Dan ordered and sat down on a comfy chair, pulling out his phone. He wasn’t even aware of what he ordered, he just thought that the only way he would get a reply was if he had left the counter. He opened up his Star Wars game app and busied himself, all the while the thought of a reply plaguing his mind.
“Dan..” He snapped his head up as soon as the word left Zoe’s lips. A reply.
This time the note read:
Hey Dan. I don’t know. Maybe names aren’t that important… Just kidding…my name is Zac.
Finally, Dan thought. Blue-green-yellow eyes was a bit long. Zac. Hmm….It didn’t seem right. He didn’t look like a Zac. Dan shrugged. I guess that’s what they mean when they say not to judge a book by it’s cover, he thought.
He quickly grabbed a napkin from his table, and took out the sharpie he had out in his pocket.
Zac. Idk, you don’t look like a Zac. But it’s a cool name.
Zoe came back with a reply very quickly this time:
Whoa!! That’s so cool! Well..kind of disappointing. You caught me. My name isn’t Zac, but I wish I could pull it off! I mean come on, Zac. YOU wish your name was Zac. My name is Phil. Phil Lester.
Dan laughed out loud, his high-pitched laugh bouncing off the walls. He looked around and noticed people giving him odd stares, but then he looked at Phil, who seemed proud to have made Dan react in such a way.
This went on for as long as Dan could manage. He would come to the coffee shop EVERYDAY, and his heart would almost explode every time Phil walked into the shop. He would smile so big Dan was surprised his cheek muscles hadn’t given in, but, eventually Dan had to go back to London. He would stay with Zoe, but he didn’t want to over-do his stay at their house. So, unhappily, he decided to make one last visit to the coffee shop. One last time he would see Phil.
Just the idea of it filled Dan with sadness. He had grown a liking to the guy with strange hair, and seeing him had become the highlight of his day - as sad as it may sound. But, if he was going to go, he would have to let him know. So Dan trudged into the coffee shop the next morning with Zoe, and began the usual: helping Zoe until Phil came.
And it didn’t take too long.
As soon as their eyes locked Dan flashed a smile and turned away. Usually Phil would write the first note, but this time it would be Dan. He sat down. What should he write? Should he make it evident that he was sad, to make it seem like Dan liked Phil? Or should he make it seem casual, so Phil wouldn’t be too sad? Dan decided on the latter.
Hey Phil, Today is my last day in Brighton, I’m going back to my apartment in London tonight… Dan, >•
After Zoe had ensured Phil received the letter, Dan watched Phil carefully, waiting for a reaction. It wasn’t too long before he got one.
Phil’s smile turned upside down as soon as he read it. But before Phil could do anything else, someone sat in the seat in front of him. Dan frowned in annoyance and looked at them.
It was PJ. Dan had completely forgotten about everything with PJ and Chris. The birthday, even calling had completely gone over his head.
“Hi Dan.” PJ said with a half-smile.
* * * * *
Phil was disappointed to say the least. He had become almost attached to Dan, even though there had been no verbal communication between the two of them yet. He didn’t want Dan to leave so soon, he didn’t want to go back to his monochrome life. Yes, Phil too lived in London (he had only come over to see his friend Bryony), but if they both go back to London at different times, they’ll lose contact; London is a big place. Yes, he seemed to be a magnet for strange people and liked to keep a video diary about it and people on youtube seemed to enjoy it and it was exciting, and yes Dan did seen to love wearing monochrome, but his personality seemed more colourful than anyone Phil had ever met and, no matter how exciting his life may sound, Phil needed the colour from Dan, and Phil didn’t want to have that for 2 and ½ weeks and then it be taken away. Okay, Phil might have been developing a sort of crush towards Dan, and there might be a slight chance that Dan reciprocated, but he seemed so calm about leaving, like he didn’t care.
Phil looked up at Dan, and was surprised to see another man in the seat opposite him. Dan seemed happy to see him. They were laughing together, they seemed pretty close. The other man had short, brown curly hair with a side parting. He had a light but warm skin tone and was also quite tall. The two of them hugged. Phil felt like his heart had dropped. Dan seemed a bit too busy for a reply, so Phil grabbed his bag and walked out of the coffee shop, leaving Dan behind.
* * * * *
Dan was happy that him and PJ had resolved the petty argument that they had, they hugged it out. But all the while he couldn’t help but think about what Phil might have written. However, Dan was very confused to look up and see that Phil’s usual booth was empty. He quickly stood up and walked to the spot, only to see his note left on the table with no reply.
Dan was very disappointed to say the least. He was leaving that very same day, and there was little to no chance he would ever see Phil again, and this wasn’t just Dan being dramatic. Dan didn’t have the heart to answer PJ’s questioning looks. He just mumbled something about being late for his train, before brushing his hand through his hair in frustration and walking out.
Deciding that there was no longer any point in staying in Brighton until the evening, Dan instead travelled to London right then and there, arriving at his bare apartment by nightfall. He immediately collapsed onto his bed and tried to entertain himself with tumblr and funny dog and cat videos, none of which seemed to work. Dan wasn’t particularly close with his family (A/N: I know Dan’s family is dangerous territory to talk about but I promise I’ll be nice.) apart from his younger brother Adrian. This, along with his lack of friends, meant when he really should have reached out to someone to talk to, Dan couldn’t. However, the situation he was in confused Dan enormously and after a few moments of hesitation, he found himself on the other end of a line to Adrian.
“It’s been a while.” Was the first thing Adrian said after picking up.
“I know,” Dan replied, “but I’m in a situation.” Dan could hear a sigh on the other end.
“What have you done?” Adrian said with a laugh. The main reason Dan had a good bond with Adrian was how he could remove Dan from negativity just by simply listening to him and not judging him, and his willingness to help out a brother in need.
“I’m not entirely sure,” Dan began, “I was in Brighton for a while….”
Once Adrian was filled in on the details there was a long pause.
“So, I’m not entirely sure what you want me to do..” He replied finally.
Dan sighed and rubbed his face. His eyes were heavy and were begging for some sleep, exhaustion clear from the dark circles and bags under his eyes. “Neither do I, to be honest. I’m just so confused as to what to do. Phil was just someone I met at a coffee shop. I meet a lot of people at coffee shops-”
“Like bubble-gum girl.” Adrian adds. (A pretty horrifying almost-gf incident that Dan tried very hard to forget).
“Yes. But this time I can’t forget about him, and I don’t want to. Ugh, Adrian I’m so confused, I don’t know what to do or what this means.”
“Well, I think I can answer one of those questions.”
“oh really?” I say, a little hopeful. “Please say you know what I should do.”
“uhhh…no, I only think I know what this means. And I also may be the bearer of bad news.”
“ok-ay..” I reply, a little hesitant.
“I think you’re in love-”
I rolled my eyes and groaned, “Shut up Adrian, we haven’t even spoken verbally.”
“Hear me out,” Adrian said, I could hear him getting up and moving. “When I met my girlfriend, I couldn’t stop thinking about her, and now that Helena and I are in a relationship, I know I love her. Before though, obviously I was skeptical, but you have all the…symptoms or whatever.”
“Now you’re making it seem like I have an illness.” Adrian chuckled at this.
“You’re going to need to see the lurve doctor.” He said playfully.
“Shut the fuck up Adrian, you’re going to make me throw up.” I laugh half-heartedly.
“No but seriously,” all the playfulness left his voice, “if you’re never going to see him again, I suggest you do get cured by the love doctor, in other words, try to stop thinking about Phil. Thinking about him will do more damage than good.”
This was what Dan was afraid Adrian would say. It was like his whole world was crashing and falling apart around him. The bed below him felt as though it was shaking and Dan mentally willed for a black hole to appear from under him and take him away from this world that couldn’t seem to see him happy.
“Dan?” Adrian’s voice managed to drag him back into reality.
“Um, thanks Adrian, I think I should get some rest now.”
“Okay, Dan. I’m sorry.” Those last two words created a hole in Dan’s stomach and a lump in his throat. He wanted to throw up and cry all at the same time. The universe was against him, Dan thought. There was no point in anything anymore. Dan didn’t care who Phil was. He just wanted to see him again. And say goodbye properly. With Dan’s luck, it was pretty much certain that he had fallen in love with someone who wasn’t his soulmate, and the universe or even God couldn’t take that for once in his life, Dan was happy. Obviously this was bad and couldn’t possibly be allowed to happen, so the cause of this happiness, Phil, had to be taken away. Thinking about soulmates, Dan was also pretty certain that his soulmate would end up being some girl that cares more about money than anything else, with a shitty personality. These were the thoughts that kept Dan awake that night, making sure that he would be able to see the first few rays of sunlight entering his room, and hear the first chirps of birds in the early morning.
Not being able to bear the cheerful notes of the birds, Dan rolled out of bed and did his morning routine. Before long he was sitting on his sofa, on the crease that perfectly cushioned his spine, and opened up his laptop.
Time for some stalking.
Yes, Dan knew what Adrian had said about forgetting Phil, but that’s a lot easier said than done, and it wouldn’t hurt to do a little bit of intense stalking on the internet. It didn’t take long for him to find something. A gold mine.
Phil Lester was a rather strange name, and it really helped that HE HAD A YOUTUBE ACCOUNT. It was very popular too, he had 3,611,147 subscribers, which is insane. How had Dan never come across him?
Dan now made it a priority to watch every single video Phil had made, on every single channel Phil had. Dan learnt so much from the videos. How Phil loved animals, cereal and had a secret eating problem. Phil had a cheerful and happy personality, always wanting to make people laugh. However, on the video 'Sideways Gary’, Dan’s stomach rumbled, and it rumbled pretty loudly, distracting him.
Looking at the time, Dan saw that it was 2:41pm, and Dan hadn’t eaten breakfast or lunch. Reluctantly, Dan closed the lid on his laptop. He decided to have both breakfast and lunch at the same time, because why not? He was hungry.
First, breakfast. Cereal.
Dan took out his favourite cereal from the cupboard: Frosted Shreddies. (a/n: idc, it’s my favourite!!). He poured some in a bowl and went to the fridge, opening it to take out the milk. There was no milk.
“For fucks sake.” Dan groaned. “Now I have to go outside.” Dan slammed the fridge door closed, and put on his black shoes and jacket, before walking outside into the chilly autumn breeze. The day was pretty beautiful, orange and red leaves littered the floor, the trees bare from any leaves, the sun peeking out from behind a sea of clouds and a slight breeze making the branches of the trees sway.
Dan instantly reached for his phone from his front right pocket, but it wasn’t there. Panic rose inside of Dan as he checked all his other pockets.
“Seriously? Seriously Dan, you plank.” He mumbled to himself. Without his phone, Dan would actually have to look around him, and he would have no excuse if someone decided to strike a conversation with him.
Dan looked up and continued walking, when he realised how tired he was. His eyelids were incredibly heavy and his head was pounding. He had absolutely no sleep, and it didn’t help that he spent 7 hours on youtube as soon as he woke up. And he missed Phil. He could almost see Phil’s jet black fringe, his pale skin and blue-green eyes. His brightly coloured tops and tall figure.
No. He could actually see it. He could see Phil, a few feet in front of him, stopped at a crossing, wearing black jeans, a navy blue space t-shirt and a space coat.
Dan physically stopped in his tracks. Was he imagining it? Was this real life? If so, why was he here? What was happening??
Phil began to cross the road towards Dan, it was pretty clear that he hasn’t spotted Dan, as he took long strides in Dan’s direction, looking around obliviously.
All the breath went out of Dan as his brain scrambled for something to do. He was still unaware of what was happening when Phil walked right past Dan, and he saw his own hand reach out and grab Phil’s arm. Phil stopped, confused, until he spotted Dan. Dan saw his eyes light up, and it made his heart beat at a million beats a second. Dan knew he was smiling like an idiot, but he didn’t care. He was so happy. He opened his mouth to say something. But nothing happened. Dan grew confused and worried. Was he so shocked that he couldn’t speak or….
Was Phil his soulmate?
The thought made Dan want to do cartwheels in the air, but Dan was too physically unfit and was pretty sure he would medically die like eight times if he even attempted to do so. He noticed Phil open his mouth to speak, but he couldn’t say anything either. The two of them looked at each other, and they both knew what it meant. They were soulmates, and they couldn’t talk to each other until they share their first kiss.
Dan started to move his head slowly forwards, only to be stopped by Phil. Phil looked at Dan and shook his head, making Dan look at him questioningly. Phil took out his phone and typed something quickly, before showing it to Dan:
Who was that guy at the coffee shop you were hugging?
This made Dan smile, Phil got jealous so he left? Holy shit, that’s adorable, Dan thought. He took the phone out of Phil’s hand and replied:
Oh, PJ? He was that guy I was arguing with, remember? He had just come to sort everything out after his boyfriend told him to.
Dan made it very clear that PJ had a boyfriend so obviously Dan wasn’t in a relationship with him. He handed the phone back to Phil and smiled as he noticed Phil was looking slightly embarrassed.
Dan was taken by surprise when he suddenly felt Phil’s lips collide with his own. For a second he was still comprehending the situation before he closed his eyes and leaned into the kiss. Phil’s lips were soft and plump and were moving perfectly in sync with Dan’s. Dan felt Phil’s arms wrap around the nape of Dan’s neck as Dan’s own hands traveled up Phil’s back and gently tugged on the choppy strands of Phil’s hair. Everything around them seemed to evaporate, the chatter of the people, the beeping and zooming of cars on the road and the gentle footsteps of everyone walking. All gone. It was just Dan and Phil now, and that was all that mattered.
It felt like too soon when Phil broke away, but the smile he shared with Dan made it okay.
“Hey.” Phil’s voice was deep and mellow but seemed kind. Dan let this sound sink in before responding.
“Hello.”
Dan felt butterflies grow in his stomach as he grinned at Phil in front of him. He felt happy, something he wasn’t expecting as he walked out of his house for milk, but something he was sure would be more present in his life as he smiled at Phil. Phil, his first love, his soulmate.
