I just wanna talk to whoever thought this was a good idea

This is probably even more shady than it seems. They raise the rates and then less people go. Low attendance numbers leads to that park getting less attention and less money. This discourages new parks and devalues current parks. Then the government can be like “lol people don’t care about nature let’s drill” Parks and libraries should be free places for people to enrich themselves, but smart sheep aren’t worth anything 🐑

^^^This. It’s why they’re also slashing park funding. According to the linked article, the current budget proposal includes:

  • Cutting base operating funding by $132 million, affecting at least 90 percent of parks. This includes cuts to law enforcement, health and safety, natural and cultural resource projects, and volunteer and youth programs.
  • Cutting 1,242 staff positions.
  • A 37 percent cut to the Historic Preservation Fund.
  • A drastic cut to federal Land and Water Conservation Fund, which helps parks purchase private lands within park boundaries from willing sellers that would otherwise be vulnerable to inappropriate commercial or residential development.
  • Elimination of the National Heritage Area program, which preserves large historic landscapes managed through innovative partnerships.

Combined with the drastic rate hike, it’s hard to see this as anything other than a ploy to force park closures.

This proposal is currently open for public comments and will be open until November 23.

Comments can be written by anyone. You don’t have to live in America.

Please write a comment saying how much you love the parks or a certain park or why you think this is a bad idea. If you don’t live in America write something about how you travel here to see the parks or how you wish that your country had a park service like America (the American government loves having its ego stroked)

Public comments are the only thing the park service is going to see. They aren’t going to see how many notes this post gets, they’re going to look at that comments page to see how many people they would tick off it they did this. So please, reblog this post but go comment, it’s the only way to let the parks service know how you feel.

Mother of All Sherlollilists

I have updated a lot of fics on my Mother of All Sherlollilists google spreadsheet, and want to remind folks that there’s a tab dedicated solely to 2017 fics for easier perusing when it comes time to nominate your faves for the 2017 SAMFAs. I’ve also added a link to my home page so you don’t have to go hunting for it.

Between the Waters, Chapter 10

Molly scrubbed her skin so hard, it hurt. Then she stood under the pounding water, the heat bleeding through her until she was so dizzy she had to make it stop.

For a long time, she stood behind the curtain, hands crossed at her shoulders, breathing into the solid air, remembering…

Running her hands through his wet hair…

Washing the soap off his skin…

Trying not to stare at his chest, his arms, his back, his…

The steam evaporated and she was forced out of her memories by the cold.

She took time drying herself, moisturising her legs, brushing her teeth. She even flossed, eyes on her reflection in the foggy mirror.

“So attractive,” she mocked, squinting at her mottled skin and dark eyes, the permanent crease in her forehead. “You look like you spent the night on someone’s floor.” She smiled. “Oh. That’s right. You did.”

Y’all.

I know many of you loved the Wonder Woman movie and probably have no interest in my politicized World War I-related negativity, so I am putting it under a cut.

But seriously. What the hell.

Yes! This was exactly my reaction to the movie, but you’ve stated it with a hell of a lot more eloquence and detail. I was sitting in the theater thinking, “WTF? Jingoism and ahistoricism win at the movies, *again*. This. Is. Propaganda.”  @hattigalore-blog, have you seen this? This is what we were talking about the other week.

After being in the rhythm and mindset of writing shippy comedy for so long, trying to write deep, angsty, emotional sex is the most excruciating kind of ‘grind 'em til ya find 'em’ exercise in typing—deleting—staring-at-the-blinking-cursor. I would like the 11k-words-in-two-days mania back please, so I can get this out of my head before the goddamn summer is over.

Also, today is exactly six months since I started posting fic again.  In that time, I’ve managed 228k words over 13 works and at least 16 different fic universes.  So I know I can make words happen when I’m motivated.  So why I can’t I do it for original things?  I could so very easily reskin some of my fic (both posted and unfinished) into something I could self-publish at the very least, but I just can’t let myself do that because it feels like cheating.  I really wish I could get over this.  My standards for myself are higher than they should be and my fear of valid criticism has had me in a chokehold for 20 years; if I could just step out of that, I would be a much happier person and actually get shit done.

So yeah.  I’m going to at least celebrate my wordcount for a while.  They say you need to write a million words before you can… I dunno, whatever it is, something about a million words being some kind of arbitrary marker for something…  Anyway, I’m up to like 700 mil now (with a bunch of other stuff I never posted anywhere, like my 175k never-posted-or-finished Neverwinter Nights 2 fic and the unfinished amateur abomination that was my first foray into fanfiction of any kind, over in the Doctor Who fandom), so I’m closer to something than I am farther away from it, I guess.  Hurray :|

@sunken-standard Valid criticism can be (and has been) made of Dickens, LeGuin, Shakespeare, any writer -- but their writing is still a gift to us all and the world is a richer place for their work. I read an interview with Kazuo Ishiguro once where he said that every single book he’s ever written has been a disappointment to him, because it never matches the book he has in his head. And it never will. That’s just the way of art. Nothing’s ever going to be what you want it to be. I think it’s natural for creative people to doubt themselves more or less constantly. It’s really really hard to appreciate, from the inside, how powerful and wonderful something may be, because as the artist you’re naturally focussed on the things that you feel *don’t* work or you *didn’t* get right. But those of us outside peering in are not looking at those imperfections that seem so big to you -- we’re better able to appreciate the work as a whole, and we’re just grateful for the miracle it is that someone was able to make something complex and beautiful out of thin air.  Feel free to tell me to get stuffed if you really didn’t want a pep talk or if you’re sick of hearing it. But I’ll keep telling you you’re an amazing writer until you do tell me to stop, because it’s true. I would pay real money for the chance to read anything you write -- and I’m a library fanatic, so I almost never buy books anymore! (Also, on a side note -- god knows I *love* your shippy comedy, but hearing that you may be giving us more “deep, angsty, emotional sex” has pretty much made my week.)   :-)

Unfriendly reminder that “please write more” isn’t a review, it’s a demand. At least preface it with “I love this” or “Your characterization was spot on”. You know, buy me dinner first, sheesh!

Ok, Ok, good, bab, but then, maybe I don’t feel like writing another 3000-5000 word chapter for ungrateful twats like you?

I have written nearly 500K of fan fiction. I would say every 500 words takes me about an hour to properly write and edit. That’s about 1000 hrs of labor for all for the love of my readers and their validation of my art in a three year span.

1000 hrs? Let’s put that into perspective.

The average full-time worker works ~ 2200 hrs in a year. This means I have worked 6 months of unpaid time on top of my full-time job and raising two kids to pump out entertainment and believe me, the latest stories in the last year I have been writing solely for my long time readers because I love them so much.

So yeah, a random, “you’re so great and here’s why” is the least you can fucking do. Thanks.

The last time I pointed out to someone the same thing mae said, I got called an arrogant, ungrateful asshole.  I’ve only done 200k words in those six months of unpaid time, though, so I guess I’m just a slacker.

I’m usually pretty good at shrugging off backhanded compliments and seeing things in the spirit they’re intended, but sometimes a feeling of reader entitlement gets to every writer.

And another protip: when leaving a comment for an author, unless they’re your friend you know exactly how they’ll take it, never use any form of the word “disappointing” in your review.  You’re entitled to feel that way, but I’m not producing content just for you, so I don’t really want to know about it.  It’s not going to make me write what you want to see.

BLESSED ARE THE CONTENT MAKERS

GIVE OUR CREATORS ALL THE LOVE CHERISH THEM because when the show is on hiatus (or even active) this is where we get our fill.

Even though fanfic (art, meta, gifs, etc) is free, this is still an economy.  Creators deserve to have their hard work rewarded in some way.  They deserve it.  Even if they’re just creating solely for themselves - if they’re taking the step to share it with us, they deserve praise, thanks, acknowledgement, keysmashing, kudos, whatever you are willing/able to give.

An essay isn’t necessary, there’s nothing humble in a demand, and frankly that’s a smartass answer.  If you have the time to say “write more” you have the time to add a few more keystrokes and say “this was great” or “I loved this” or even “WOW”.  That’s three extra pushes.  You can do it.

Because if you can’t be bothered to give a writer the respect they’ve earned, maybe they can’t be bothered to write for you.

^^^This. I don’t write fandom stuff (I’m not creative enough), but I write other things, and writing is haaaard. We are so damn lucky that so many wonderful, talented writers are generous enough to share their work with us, with no expectation of reward other than a kudo here and there and an occasional kind word from us. I can’t express how grateful I am for our fandom’s writers (and other creators) and their amazing generosity. <3

Requested by @anitaww-blog: For the new drabble challenge: # 61 (Yeah, okay, when pigs fly) and/or #66 (She was hot, admit it.) Thank you so much!

“Yeah, okay, when pigs fly”/ “She was hot, admit it.”

Sherlock tried not to look down Molly’s very low-cut vest; she was practically on his lap since they were crammed in the back seat of John’s car and he hadn’t taken Rosie’s carseat out. She had crumbs in her décolletage from the brownie she was eating.

“Oh for—just have a bite already, you’re staring at it like you haven’t eaten in weeks,” she said, holding the brownie up to his mouth with one hand, the kitchen roll ‘napkin’ under it to catch crumbs (for all the good that did).

CHAPTER 7: Time for a Drink

Molly couldn’t face the lift. It was all mirrors and she didn’t want to look at herself right now, so she took the stairs, trudging up them slowly, trying to focus on the burn in her thighs instead of John’s face, his rubbed-red eyes, his drooping cheeks.

How could you do that?

She had lied to him. She had looked into his eyes and…

She turned mid-step, hand on the railing. She should run after him. She had his number. She could call him, make him wait, or come back. Invite him in. Explain everything.

It was only fair. He’d want to know. He should know.

“Promise me – promise me - that you won’t tell him.”

“I can’t…I can’t,” she told the stairwell as her eyes began to stream again. “I can’t tell him.”

The London Sherlock Location Guidebook

It’s done! Get the PDF here.

File size: 355MB

The fruit of hundreds of hours of research, tramping London, photographing, screencapping and cursing PowerPoint, it is here!

The guide contains maps showing how to find every known BBC Sherlock location in London, with screencaps and text identifying where it featured, and contemporary photos to show what it looks like now. There are also some special sections such as how to follow the ASIP taxi chase in order, and area maps to help you devise local mini-tours if you like.

I (@pennypaperbrain) have lived in London for 20 years, and this guide grew out of showing fandom friends around, first the obvious places and then some not so obvious. Photography is by the indispensable @sincerely-chaos.

This is version 1 so I’m sure there are many improvements and refinements that can be made. Please email londonsherlocktour at gmail dot com if you have feedback, or squee. (You can also use tumblr of course, but tumblr eats asks). If you end up using the guide in London, it would also be particularly cool to have stories/photos to feature on this tumblr.

This is real London! City of tea, architecture and fine telly. Don’t stop coming to visit us.

Can’t wait to put this to use in July! Thanks so much!

Great! We’d love it if you sent in any photos or stories of your explorations.

Unpopular Opinion - Sherlock, S4

So, is it an unpopular opinion, on all sides, that John texting another woman is forgivable, even understandable? Because I see a lot of anger towards John about it and so much of it is truly vehement and damning of his behaviour, but I can’t believe that everyone expressing that opinion has never flirted with someone whilst in a relationship (maybe some have and, hey, good for you…) and enjoyed it.

I also can’t believe that John texting the other woman is as bad as some of the stunts Sherlock pulls. I mean, people are so mean about John when he’s literally done maybe two shitty things in the whole 4 seasons (ok, you can add a couple more when it comes to dating), yet Sherlock does something shitty almost every episode!

Don’t get me wrong - I still love Sherlock (too much); the bad boy side of it is part of the attraction, right? But c'mon! John’s the good one! So he sent some flirty texts? What’s to say Mary hadn’t done something similar another time during their relationship? (She’s too tenacious not to enjoy a good flirt now and then. It’s even part of her nature; she flirts more with Sherlock than Molly does!) It was shitty, and John hates himself for it - he would have hated himself for it anyway, if Mary had lived, whether he’d taken it further or not, because he’s the type of person who hates to cause upset, hates to offend. He only hurts those he thinks deserve it, which is part of his character arc, isn’t it? In S4, he’s the out of control one - the one with all the flaws; the pain he’s gone through has skewed his perceptions, and he no longer trusts because, when he has trusted, he has been betrayed and/or hurt. And yeah, I mean by Sherlock and Mary.

So, yeah…I’m sure people have expressed this opinion before but I’d be interested to know just how typical, or not, it is.

anitaww-blog

Hmm. I kind of agree and kind of don't. I think his behavior is pretty crappy. It's not just a little casual flirting -- it's underhanded and secretive, something he's actively working to hide from Mary. And the fact that he starts it just weeks after she gives birth makes it extra crappy. So I think it is deserving of anger. I also agree with @writingwife-83 that wondering whether Mary might have done something similar at some point in their relationship isn't really relevant. We can never know, and even if she HAD, that doesn't excuse his behavior.

Having said that, though, I think that a lot of the anger people feel may stem less from precisely what he did and more from how out of character it is for him. I mean, John is basically supposed to be the loyal sidekick. That's kind of who he is. If a different kind of character had acted that way, we might have said, "Oh, that's terrible, but he's interestingly flawed, everyone makes mistakes, etc." But we have higher standards for John (at least in terms of expectations of loyalty). Which may or may not be a fair way to approach it.

I know that my expectations and preconceptions of the characters in general color my perceptions of their actions. For instance, I agree with you that Sherlock is often really abusive to John (one of the many reasons Johnlock is not something I can get into -- there's very clearly love between the two of them, but there's no real tenderness), but I'm much more forgiving of that than I am of John's bad behavior. Because I love Sherlock so much, and because I see him as a much more "broken" character than John, I'll give him a pass where I might not be willing to for John.

So I think yeah, maybe the distribution of anger is a bit unfair. But I'm still kinda angry. ;-)

breathe…..breathe….breathe ❤️

Basically that one time Sherlock and Molly did a “Trash the Dress” wedding photoshoot and the photographer got… distracted.

Okay, but seriously:

“Jesus,” Mary said, staring at the video.

“I know,” Molly replied.

“I mean this is basically just porn.  Do you always take your clothes off like you’re angry with them, leggy?”

Sherlock replied, “I am ignoring you, Mrs. Watson,” and kept on typing something into his laptop.

“She… she slowed the clips down, didn’t she?  And she sepia toned them!  And you were there for this, Molly?”

“Oh, yes.  Standing two feet away in Vera Bleeding Wang.  Not that you can tell, because I don’t appear in a single shot.”

Sherlock stopped his furious typing and said, “Are you still on about that?  It wasn’t your actual wedding gown, you didn’t pay for it, and as we discussed at the time the entire thing was a brilliant charade for me to get closer to the photographer and determine whether her alibi at the time of the murder would have been valid.  Which, just incidentally, totally worked.”

“There were eels, Sherlock.  Eels.”

And I figured out motive.  She is not, as she claims, strictly homosexual-”

“Clearly,” Mary snorted.

“-thus enabling romantic jealousy as a driver for that poisoning.”

“Great.  Not gay, murderer, incredibly unprofessional about her job.  I should probably ask her on a date,” Molly moaned.

“We’re basically two-for-two on murderous wedding photographers, aren’t we?” Mary mused.

“Statistical anomaly,” Sherlock proclaimed, “As a profession it’s no more than one in thirty.”

“Seriously?”

“That estimate may be on the high end,” he conceded.

“I looked so flipping pretty and I stood in cold water up to my arse for two hours and I’ve nothing to show for it,” Molly sulked from the corner of the sofa.

“Apart from, you know, the whole justice for the murdered bit.  And you were beautiful, not pretty.”

Molly sat up and looked over at Mary, who was pursing her lips together to keep a laugh down.  Then she looked over at Sherlock, who was sitting very still and turning red.

“Anyway, do have to dash,” Mary said into the sudden silence, “Rosie needs… her vaccinations.  Yes.  Very time-sensitive jabs.  Next time you do this, Sherlock, bring John instead, I like him in a morning suit.  Or getting out of it.  Ta.”

She was already texting before the door had closed behind her.

I didn’t think it was possible to make this post better.

BUT YOU DID

Perfect fic for this lovely gif.

Oh, you’re good…

Sherlock blinks at her. Licks his lips.

Quite without her meaning them to, Molly’s eyes flick down to said lips, and thence to said tongue.

Despite her best efforts, she feels her face go entirely red.

Sherlock is eyeing her. “You-” He stops. Clears his throat. He looks a little uncertain. He can’t seem to decide what to do with his hands and suddenly the floor seems to fascinate him. “You have a thing about me and, um, water?” he asks hesitantly.

The words pop onto Molly’s lips without a hair of forethought.

“It’s more about you and wetness, actually,” she says, and then instantly she wants the floor to open up and swallow her. Suave, Molly, she thinks to herself. So very, very suave.

Perhaps for a follow-up you can trip on your own tongue.

Now it’s her turn to become fascinated by the carpet. The silence sprawls out between them, awkward and horrid and there, there, there. Molly bites her lip, unable to think of a single thing to say, and as she does so she suddenly hears footsteps. The door to the bathroom opens.

When she looks up Sherlock’s at it and he’s opening the top button of his shirt. “What are you doing?” she asks, her embarrassment forgotten, and a slow, wry smile tugs at his lip.

It looks bloody incendiary.

“Bath,” he says. “Not the sort of thing one wants to do alone,” he adds. When she doesn’t say anything he rolls his eyes. Reaches out and takes her hand. “Chop, chop, Molly” he says, “things to get on with, wetness to be exploited, etc. etc. etc.”

Molly frowns at him abut nevertheless allows herself to be dragged along towards the bathroom. Despite her best intentions, she even starts unbuttoning her top button too.

It may not be as exotic as a lake and a morning suit, but then again, who is she to turn up her nose at the sight of Sherlock Holmes’ rubber ducky?
