An Oath to Return

605 words. Sora/Kairi. Angst, Romance, Fluff, Longing, Pining. Set post-KH3, ReMind, and Melody of Memory.

Summary: Sora changes his necklace to reflect his determination to return to Kairi.

Sora was comfortable with offering his heart as a shelter. Used to having the fates of other people resting in his hands. Knew what kind of trust and vulnerability that took. He’d cried Roxas’s tears, fought Ven’s rage and determination and fears, felt Xion’s sadness and pain. But being inside Kairi’s heart, guiding her body, fighting in her stead—

That took so much trust that it stole his breath from his lungs and threatened to make his heart burst out of warmth and tenderness. Being with Kairi, sharing the paopu fruit with her, flying together, fighting so in sync they were moving as one—the urge to cherish her got stronger and more powerful than ever. All he could think about was keeping her safe and protecting her from harm. That was what drove him to defeat Xehanort again.

He took a few moments to savor his victory, no, their victory, but he knew his time with her wouldn’t last. As the connection with her faded, the separation was painful. Jarring. Like chords snapped apart when he and Kairi were always meant to be together. The severed connection throbbed and bled from the most sensitive parts of his heart, and he clutched his chest and doubled over.

He was back in the mysterious city he kept finding himself in. A far cry from Destiny Island’s balmy beaches, this place was cold and dark and aloof. A forest of skyscrapers and concrete instead of palm trees and ocean waves. Another world, no, another reality. His breath came out in ragged gasps as he tried to process what had just happened. All he knew was that Kairi’d been in trouble and he’d sworn on his life that he would never fail her again.

Hi everyone! So between all the irl things that’s been happening in the past few years (finishing university, grad school, beginning my career as a high school teacher, COVID, etc.), you can probably already tell that my tumblr and other social media have taken a backseat. I’m still alive, but am really conserving my energy to focus on a few things at a time until I’m more settled, and I can return back to some of my nerd passions/interests online. XD One of the things I do still try to make time for every year though is writing. This year, I’ve had the pleasure of contributing—alongside many other beautiful writers and artists—in the RokuNami Crimson Strings of Fate fanzine: The Way You Remember Me.
