To everyone who is going out to the protests across the United States, especially in Portland, please remember:

1. Never talk to the cops. It doesn’t matter if you want to explain your side of the story, tell them off, or try to convince them to let you go. Say nothing. It’s almost impossible to talk yourself out of criminal charges. It’s very easy to talk yourself into them. Say. Nothing.

2. If you are arrested, clearly say the words “I am invoking my right to silence, and I am invoking my right to a lawyer. I will not speak to you without a lawyer present.”. Ambiguous statements like “I think I need a lawyer” or “gimme a lawyer” have historically not held up in court. State very clearly that you are invoking your right to an attorney and will not answer questions without one. This is the only thing you will say, over and over again.

3. Seriously, don’t talk to the cops. Saying that you are invoking your right to remain silent does not mean the cops have to stop questioning you. If you say that you are remaining silent, it’s up to you to actually remain silent. They will try very hard to get you to talk even after you’ve stated that you will be silent, and if they succeed, your words will be held against you.

4. Do not lie to the cops. Lying to authorities is a felony. Best way to avoid lying? Say absolutely nothing.

5. Take the biometric locks off your phone. If your phone can be unlocked with your face or fingerprint, police can force you to unlock your phone for them. If it opens only with a passcode or password, they cannot compel you to unlock the phone without a warrant.

6. Livestream interactions with the cops, don’t just film with the camera app. Make sure all interactions with the cops are filmed, and make sure that the footage is being sent somewhere where it cannot be deleted or destroyed by police.

7. Make sure that someone knows you are out protesting, and that this person knows your full legal name, date of birth, and what time to expect you home. If you are arrested, your loved ones will need this information to find you in the system. Don’t assume that your friends know your DOB and full legal name - send a picture of your ID to a trusted person who will not be protesting and let them know to start looking for you if you don’t check in a set time. Some protesters have also begun shouting this information as they are being arrested so other protesters can record it.

8. Get the information for a pro-bono lawyer in your area and write it on your body. Several lawyers and firms have offered to defend anyone arrested at the protests for free. Write down the information of a free legal service on your body with permanent marker before you go to protest, ideally in a location like your shin or forearm where you won’t sweat it off - keeping the number in your phone is not helpful if your phone is confiscated, dead or damaged.

9. Stay as safe as you can. Bring water and snacks, wear sunscreen, bring bus fare, wear your mask and take rests in the shade if it gets hot out. Bring a portable charger or backup battery if you have one, and make sure your phone is charged so you can film interactions with the police. Look out for your fellow protesters, and let other protesters know right away if you are injured or in need of assistance. Do whatever you can to make it back home safe.  Black Lives Matter.

I thought this was good info. Please stay safe everyone❤

Please help sign this petition to extend the re-investigation for the Jang Jayeon case of 2009.

For anyone who does not know, Jang Jayeon is a Korean actress who committed suicide in 2009. She left behind a letter claiming that she was forced by her agent to have sex with multiple major players in the entertainment and finance industries, such as CEOs and other executives. Her case was investigated, but of the 31 guilty parties she named in her letter, most were absolved of guilt at the time.

(For more details about the initial case, you can read this article.)

Recently, Jang Jayeon’s colleague Yoon Ji-Oh came forward with a book called ‘The 13th Statement’ to direct public attention to this case again. Yoon testified as a witness for the case back when it happened, but the justice she wanted for her friend was never obtained. In her book, she points suspicion at the faults of the investigation and names evidence (names of involved parties from Jang Jayeon’s letter) that was never brought up before.

In 2018, a petition for re-investigation extended the deadline for prosecution for this case. But the deadline of that extension is now coming up again. The statute of limitations for Jang Jayeon’s case ends in 15 days from now.

Yoon Ji-Oh recently spoke up to name her frustration about how whenever Jang Jayeon’s case is opened for re-investigation, larger scandals always seem to occur so that needed attention is taken away from her case. We all know of what is happening right now with Seungri, Jung Joonyoung, and their crimes. However, few seem to know of this opportunity to bring Jang Jayeon justice, and her case is threatened to be buried under these more currently prevalent scandals. If people are not made aware of this, the deadline for her case will pass, and the re-investigation may occur too late.

In addition, certain names that Yoon Ji-Oh implicated as guilty parties have been tied to major news outlets in Korea. Because of this, some people are suspicious that major influencers in the media may be directing the public’s attention to larger scandals, to keep the re-investigation of Jang Jayeon’s case buried.

(You can read a translation about the re-investigation here.)

In order to help extend the statute of limitations for this case (so that the re-investigation has enough time to root out the offenders) - please sign this petition here.

All you have to do is scroll down to the middle of the page where the comment box is, and sign in to one of your SNS accounts by clicking on one of the SNS icons (Facebook, Twitter, or Telegram). Once you sign in, you just need to paste the phrase ‘동의합니다.’ in the comment box (this means ‘I agree/approve’ of the petition), then click the blue submit button. You can scroll further down and check the comments of previous petition signers to see what it should look like.

For clarity’s sake, here is the link of the petition, again: HERE

Please help bring Jang Jayeon the justice she should have gotten a decade ago. She is yet another victim, just like the women who have been abused by the likes of Jung Joonyoung, Seungri, and the other names that are being brought up in the media lately. Every single one of these victims deserve to be brought justice.

About an hour ago, I was in Walmart looking for my conditioner because today is wash day for my hair. As I’m looking for my product, this older white lady approaches me and she says, “Excuse me, miss. Please don’t be offended by this.” And usually when white people tell me not to be offended, 9 times out of 10, whatever they are about to say is going to be offensive af.

Anyway, she follows it up with, “My husband and I just recently won our custody battle with our foster daughter and she means the world to us. She’s a beautiful African American girl and her hair looks a lot like yours. But I’m afraid because I don’t know what to do with her hair. It’s a lot different from mines and our other children and we are at a total loss. I’ve tried looking up the YouTube videos and my husband went to the braiding shops so they can teach him how to properly braid her hair, but he’s still pretty new and it will be a while before he gets used to it. Do you have any tips you can give me? If you don’t have the time, it’s okay, really! I just needed a little advice because I want her to look beautiful.”

Y’all. swear I almost started crying on aisle 6. So for the last 30 minutes, I spent my time talking to her and what products to use and how to properly detangle and comb her hair with the proper tools and what not to do with natural hair. And I showed her a bunch of easier to follow natural hair tutorials on YouTube and saved them for her. (I also had to create a YouTube account for her so she could save it for later.) but omfg, she was so sweet, and I could tell that she listened to every single thing I had to say and she took little notes on her little notepad.

And what really filled my heart was the fact that her husband actually taking classes from African braiding shops. And she showed me a picture of him wearing a little sweater vest and loafers in a little shop surrounded by beautiful black women showing him how to braid black hair and even the lady he’s braiding on is guiding his hands. And omfg. Bless these old white people and their black daughter who I know have new loving parents because they are willing to step out of their comfort zone just to make her feel and look beautiful.

I really hope our paths cross again one day, Mrs Cicilia. 💖💕

Kim Bok-dong, a former comfort woman for the Japanese imperial army, has passed away. She was 93 years old.
Kim’s battle with cancer came to an end at 10:41 pm on Jan. 28 at Severance Hospital in Sinchon, in Seoul’s Seodaemun District.
Born in Yangsan, South Gyeongsang Province, Kim was forced to serve as a comfort woman, or sex slave, for the Japanese imperial army at the age of 14. She returned to Korea at the age of 22. Kim was an activist for peace who testified about the suffering of the comfort women both in Korea and in other countries.
In 2015, Kim donated 50 million won (US$44,762) which represented her life savings, to the Butterfly Fund for use in supporting young victims in conflict zones and for training peace activists. The Butterfly Fund used this money to create the Kim Bok-dong scholarship fund.
That same year, Kim’s name appeared on a list of “heroes who fight for freedom” selected by international press organizations, alongside Nelson Mandela, the first black president of South Africa, and Martin Luther King Jr., a leader of the US civil rights movement.
Last year, Kim became the first recipient of the “righteous figure award,” which is chosen by a foundation called Jung (chaired by Kim Jae-hong and Kim Yong-gyun). Jung explained its selection of Kim Bok-dong as follows: “Despite bearing the pain of being a former comfort woman, Kim Bok-dong donated nearly all her assets to educating the next generation and has worked to spread her convictions about peace and unification and a proper understanding of South Korea and Japan’s historical issues.”
Death of another comfort woman victim leaves only 23 remaining survivors
After Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule, Lee barely managed to return home by getting a ride on a smuggling ship. “She was tormented her entire life by the sense of guilt and a victim mentality resulting from her terrible experiences. Whenever I visited her, I felt bad about the pain and loneliness that were evident on her face,” Yoon wrote in her post.
On Monday, Minister of Gender Equality and Family Jin Sun-mee conveyed her condolences on Lee’s passing.
“Since Lee wasn’t in good health when I saw her not long ago, I’d been sincerely hoping that her condition would quickly improve. It’s such a shame that we have to say goodbye to her so soon. I will do my best to frequently visit each of the former comfort women before it’s too late and to ensure that they are comfortable and in good health,” Jin said.
The Korean Council for Justice and Remembrance announced that Lee’s funeral would be held in private, out of the respect for the wishes of Lee and her surviving family.
The deaths of the two women bring the number of surviving comfort women down to 23.

                       !!!!!!!!! BREAKING NEWS !!!!!!!!!!

According to them:

“In today’s unanimous decision, the Tennessee Supreme Court explained that, under state law, a life sentence is a determinate sentence of 60 years,” the court wrote. “However, the sixty-year sentence can be reduced by up to 15 percent, or 9 years, by earning various sentence credits (good behavior. & getting involved in prison based education programs while incarcerated) Therefore, the Supreme Court concluded that a defendant serving a life sentence for a first-degree murder committed on or after July 1, 1995, may be eligible for release after serving at least 51 years of the sentence.“

For those of you who haven’t yet caught up to this story:

Cyntoia Brown was a 16 yr old girl, who at the time of the incident was living in a room at a Nashville InTown Suites with Allen (the man who propositioned her for sex) because her pimp and boyfriend Garion McGlothen, nick-named “Kut Throat,” insisted that she needed to earn money.

After Allen took her to his house, he showed Cyntoia multiple guns, including shotguns and rifles. Later in bed, as she described in court, he grabbed her violently by the genitals, his demeanor became threatening and, fearing for her life, she took a gun out of her purse and shot him.

IF YOU WANT TO HELP:

Call Governor Bill Haslam (615)-741-2001she has a Clemency hearing May 23rd. DEMAND JUSTICE!!

#StayWoke

The parole board split on whether Cyntoia should be granted clemency. /BillHaslam can still grant her clemency before he leaves in January. You can reach him at: phone #: (615) 741-2001; e-mail: bill.haslam@tn.gov

a lot of my friends have been noting that none of the “get out there and vote!” posts actually have any resources attached to them, so they’re great for motivation but if you don’t know how to vote they can really stress you out. so i compiled a list of resources that hopefully can help!

Step 1: Registration

Step 2: Preparation

Step 3: Voting!

  • Polling places can be crowded and the wait can be long to vote. Don’t freak out! Bring a book or some music/podcasts to listen to while you wait.
  • If you can’t make it on the day, you still have options! Find your state on this Ballotpedia page and click to learn more. The page it takes you to will have links and information on how to get an absentee ballot in your state. If you plan on absentee voting, hurry! The deadlines to apply and vote are usually sooner than the actual election day.

Most of all, remember: this election could swing the house and the senate, giving Democrats more control over new laws and legislation for years to come. You’re not a bad person if you can’t vote, but it’s a lot easier than you might think!

Let’s get out there and change the world!

PLEASE SUPPORT THE EAST LIGHT

These sweet, talented boys have been disgustingly abused by a producer in their company for years and their CEO did absolutely nothing to stop it, and even participated in the abuse. These boys are between the ages of 18-15 and this has supposedly been happening since 2015. This is disgusting and unacceptable!! Please send them kind messages on their SNS and let them know your support! This behavior can’t go on and I’m glad they’re finally taking action against it. Please give them the love they deserve…

‼️‼️ UPDATE ‼️‼️

THEIR COMPANY RELEASED THIS STATEMENT SAYING THE PRODUCER IS RESIGNING, HOWEVER THE CEO IS DENYING ANY PARTICIPATION IN THE ABUSE(WHICH I PERSONALLY CALL BS ON). THE PRODUCER WAS CAUGHT ABUSING THE MEMBERS A YEAR AND FOUR MONTHS AGO AND NOTHING WAS DONE ABOUT IT, WHICH IS UNACCEPTABLE. I DONT CARE HOW LONG AGO ITS SUPPOSEDLY BEEN, THIS MAN NEEDS TO BE TAKEN TO COURT TO PAY FOR HIS ACTIONS ALONG WITH THE CEO!!

‼️‼️‼️ ANOTHER UPDATE ‼️‼️‼️

A source close to TEL is saying that the producer has still been threatening and swearing at the boys as recently as October 4th!

This is, again, unacceptable and the producer along with the CEO need to be punished for putting the boys through this for so long! Please send them kind messages on their Instagrams, they need to know they have support!!!

(1/2) Not Kpop related, but I'm so sick of people always pulling out the tired ass "but black women wear weaves/dye their hair blonde" excuse everytime black women have a legitimate complaint. I even saw this one comment chain in which someone tried to prove that black women hate themselves more than black men by using this excuse. I hate it. Rachel or Ming Lee can dye her hair every month and not get comments like this, but...

Avatar
(2/2) I can’t wear my natural hair under crochet for one month without people thinking I hate myself. Y'know what really gets me too? These people give no shits about us or our natural hair either - they just want to criticize us. Pick apart everything that we do. Because for me, it’s like if you really gave a shit, where’s the outrage over the supreme court ruling that it’s legal to fire someone over dreadlocks? Over little girls getting kicked out of school? Of people losing their jobs?
(Same thread) If I want to dye my hair blonde, it’s not going to do it because I hAtE mY nAtUrAl hAiR cOlOr. It’s because I want to switch up my look. It’s BS. Out of every race of women, we’re the only ones it seems that get accused of hating themselves for what for all intents and purposes could be something that we’re A) Doing to experiment, B) Doing to keep a job, or C) Doing because that’s just what we prefer. Seriously - I don’t get fed up over hairstyles, but miss me with your BS.

It’s so frustrating to even try to argue with the people who bring up the whole ‘well black women dye their hair and wear weaves’ thing because they’re so committed to not trying to understand.
