The Nazis may have called themselves socialists but anyone who can be bothered to take 10 seconds out of their day and do the most basic amount of research can tell you that the Nazis had their own definition of socialism which was radically opposed to what had already become known as socialism, both Marxist and otherwise. 

For example, Marxist socialism advocates for class struggle and the abolition of private property while fascism advocates class collaboration and the defense of private property. Already we see that socialism and Nazism are polar opposites on the most fundamental points. Even worse, fascists, both Germans and Italians, actively oppressed socialists and working class movements. Both Mussolini and Hitler spoke openly of their hatred for communists and Marxists. 

The reason they called themselves socialists was because, like all right-wingers, they are liars. Socialism had a much better reputation back then so the Nazis decided to appropriate it for themselves to look good. The American Libertarian Party did the exact same thing with the term libertarian which was actually a left-wing ideology. The only difference is that libertarian Murray Rothbard admitted his dishonest use of the word while Hitler invented lies.
