Two different pictures, two different AUs! And both have one thing in common: they're AUs in which Askeladd lives I need that man to survive at all cost 😭

Top: The AU in which Askeladd and Thorfinn stay at Canute's side as his vassals Bottom: The AU in which Askeladd, instead of being killed, is imprisoned and sentenced to execution, but Thorfinn frees him. So both end up as wanted men

endless list of fave characters (44/∞) Askeladd /// Vinland Saga In an instant, I knew. If Artorius would not come to save my mother now, he would never come for us at all. Do you understand, boy? Someone has to do it. Not a hero, not a god - just someone.

It’s very interesting how some mangakas, authors in general, speak of their characters as if they’re alive and have minds of their own—as if they’re in control of their own fate. Sometimes they’re even taken aback by their actions, intrigued by their choices, and unable to answer even the simplest questions regarding some of their feelings and motives. I guess characters do take matters into their own hands, even surprising their creators in the process, whose sole role becomes to follow them down whichever path they set on and narrate their predetermined stories.

I love that in the end of the prologue, when askeladd was asking Thorfinn to fight his true battle, he said, “Become a true warrior, son of Thors.” But when Thorfinn saw him in his dream, he referred to him by his first name and said, “Become a true warrior, Thorfinn.” Just another subtle detail that reveals the complexity of their relationship and how each of them viewed the other.

Deep down, Askeladd had always felt a responsibility towards Thors to look after and guide Thorfinn, while Thorfinn, despite his hatred, had always seen in Askeladd a parental figure of some sort. While together they'd been, intentionally or unintentionally, oblivious to it, but it was when it truly came down to it that their true feelings arose. For Askeladd it was his last moments. And for Thorfinn, it was when he needed a guiding voice the most.
