again shows the common practice of taking certain aesthetics at face value and reverse engineering whole cultures, ideas and ideals from them, and ignoring that historically, it usually worked the other way around. what do you MEAN ancient rome w/o slavery, child exploitation and misogyny. whats next. roman empire 2 - no imperialism?

like whats the roman empire without imperialism, slavery, child exploitation and misogyny. aesthetics? what aesthetics? architecture? sculptures? clothing? whos gonna build all these buildings? whos gonna maintain them? whos going to mix the cement? mine for marble? iron? gems? whos going to process fibers? weave fabrics? sew them? who do you think behind all these aesthetics?

#honestly a large part of what is actually interesting about ancient rome is its depravity#people get pissy about hbo rome sometimes because they say it's sexist or problematic or whatever#but honestly it's one of the few depictions of ancient rome i've seen#where i actually FEEL like i'm spending time with characters who actually see things entirely different from me and value different things#this isn't defending them or their values in any way but i think it's important to understand these things and engage with them#ancient rome#history#text
