Fic authors deserve more credit.

Story time: I started a book about 23 hours ago and just finished it. Also in that time I slept for 10 hours, spent time with family, was at work, etc. Anyway, I enjoyed the book (Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda). But it felt like it flew by, so after I finished I looked up the word count because what are pages? Pages are meaningless. I only function in word counts anymore.

The estimate I found was 58,580. My immediate reaction was “oh, that’s why. That’s nothing!” But what a shitty response. Because no. That’s not nothing. That’s a whole. Damn. Book. An entire novel! And Fic authors regularly bust out 30k, 50k, 100k, 150k words. AND THEY DO IT FOR FREE. WHILE WORKING AND LIVING THEIR LIVES.

So anyway, thank your favorite fic author today because they deserve it. Because they’re amazing. They’re the MVPs.

Some rough word count equivalencies for you, via famous novels, just to give you an idea of what OP is saying:

I can’t believe I’ve surpassed Animal Farm.

Holy shit.

This is awesome. With that said, huge appreciation also to fic writers who write shorter fics - 10k, 5k, 1k, 500 words. Because yeah, huge long fics get a lot of love, and a lot of labour goes into them, but the same is true for tiny fics as well. Not everyone is banging out huge great novels, but little ficlets are fantastic and still bring readers a ton of joy.

So if you’re feeling a bit downcast because you can’t write that 50 chapter epic or your latest WIP is “only” 2k and it still took you ages - that’s amazing. Seriously. Not everyone is naturally wordy or prolific. And you can say a ton with just a few hundred or thousand words.

Props to short fic creators - you guys are awesome.

For those writers who discredit themselves because they feel they aren’t writing the novels that others might, you’re still writing a novella, my dears. You’re still putting time, effort, and passion into something. Well done.

Cars I think stargate folks would drive

Jack: Old stinky truck that can be fixed with duct tape and a well annunciated “FUCK” drives a standard because it’s what he learned on.

Sam: a JDM car that can go really fast with minimal effort. Drives a standard to have more control over the speed and sound of the car.

Teal’c: a used Toyota Corolla. He’s a smart man, wants to get from point a to point b. Knows that car will outlive him and all his friends. It will be his Toyota Corolla and the roaches in the apocalypse. Drives automatic because FUCK standard.

Daniel: A Volvo This man was a starving student for years. He owns an easily and cheaply insured car that will kill everyone and anything in its path before killing anyone on board. He drives an automatic because he doesn’t care and nothing matters.

Jonas: brand new Honda Civic type R. Blasts the Tokyo Drift theme for the memes at like 3 am making the turbo kick in on residential streets. He drives stick.

Vala: this. Self explanatory.

General Hammond: Cadillac SUV. Drives automatic. Only goes above the speed limit for his Grand Kids and SG-1.

Stinky Pete (Sam’s boyfriend that made no sense): Nissan Cube. No elaboration needed. Drives an automatic and still somehow stalls.

Laughed out loud at Vala’s car. Absolutely screamed at Pete’s. 👏🏻

do you ever sit with a group of people and not say anything for  the entire time so theres no reason for you to be there youre just awkwardly listening to people converse while doing your own thing and wondering how its so easy for them to just talk or why its so hard for you to say anything

Me: *grabs Sam by the face* HOW DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH THAT MAN LOVES YOU. HE WOULD LITERALLY DIE FOR YOU. HE LOOKS AT YOU LIKE YOU ARE THE ONLY LIGHT IN HIS LIFE. STOP BEING STUPID. OKAY?? OKAY.

My take on it was a little different. I thought the insecurities weren’t about feelings - because they visibly show how much they care for each other and in fact it might have been easier if they were unsure of feelings - but came from what that meant it terms of waiting for reassignment/retirement. Indeffinately waiting is not practical and all that pining is unhealthy. Not to mention lonely. It’s like if you’re given a valid reason you can’t eat bread you don’t spend 15 years pining for bread, you accept it and find an alternative. And that’s what Sam did in S7 with Pete (and kinda did with Orlin and Joe) which I personally don’t have a problem with. Love with different people isn’t necessarily worse or better; it’s good in different ways. I also remember outcry over Jack’s “Excuse me?” in Grace but again, I think it showed he was still aware of her feelings and also aware that she would never call him Jack like that under normal circumstances. And it’s them both being aware of feelings for each other that made that elevator scene in Chimera awkward.

I can see that perspective too! I think it's probably a mix of the two, tbh. They know some of the feelings but they don't know all of them, leading to the insecurity. And of course the regs means they're hesitant to do anything.

I absolutely do not begrudge Sam trying to find happiness. Of course Fucking Pete probably wasn't the way to go, but it's not her fault he was a douche.
