Ok so, sophia posted this on twitter:

People are coming for her bc they say these posts give hope to girls out there and whatnot.

For those that cant read between the lines, she’s saying she doesn’t want special treatment for being a woman. She wants to be known as an athlete. That’s it. Yes, her presence means a lot and it’s ok to acknowledge it, but that’s not her whole story.

Her point makes sense. She’s annoyed that every mention she gets is about her being a woman in motorsports, and she obvs is, but she wants to move on from that narrative. She wants to be known for more than being a woman in a male dominated sport.

I bet she gets this all the time, too. She’s inspiring to girls in the world not bc of the random posts, but because she gets to live her dream. Her presence means representation. The posts are fine, but to a certain extent.

She’s not just a woman in motorsports, she’s an athlete. Being a woman is not an add-on bonus. She’s an athlete and she happens to be a woman.

It’s like how Lewis Hamilton is a formula 1 driver. He’s also a black man. He’s the only black man in formula one. But every social media post about him isn’t “lewis hamilton, black f1 driver, wins xyz race”.

Maybe im missing smth about why this triggered so many people. Someone explain it to me lol

So, im watching a short documentary type video about Lewis’ rookie season in F1 and damn!

They basically set up his early career and his entry into F1.

In 2007, Fernando, who was a 2x WDC winner and reigning champion at the time, got into McLaren and saw a championship winning car and obviously wanted to keep winning.

But, it was rumoured/reported in the media that he questioned the team’s decision to hire a rookie. The article said that Alonso, allegedly, thought it was too easy and that McLaren was essentially throwing the season away bc they had an incredible car. But fernando went with it bc, in his mind, the battle for his 3rd wdc was half won.

The documentary showed a picture of lewis and Fernando (idk if it was from one of their first meetings and before the season began), but Fernando has a smirk on his his face and lewis is smiling. Fernando looks like he’s thinking that this is gonna be easy, peasy.

THEN, the first race happens. Lewis drove like a madman. Qualified 4th and two-tenths faster than Fernando.

That Sunday in Australia, Lewis finished his first ever f1 race on the podium, in 3rd place and Alonso’s face on that podium celebration is just… he looks like he’s seen a ghost. I googled the celebration to look at other photos and he looks very absentminded. He’s definitely lost in thought and i dont blame him. Lewis not only managed to keep up with him (fernando finished 2nd and kimi won), but he almost showed him up and now poses a serious threat to his reign.

Anyway, i just wanted to share that bc it was crazy to watch the start of a crazy rivalry through images.

Super fun watch!

Cont’d

His first 4 races, Lewis got podiums. He was 2nd in 3/4 races, got a fastest lap on his 2nd race, and was LEADING the WDC 4 races into his rookie season.

Needless to say, this was a BIG wake up call.

Points 4 races in:

1 Lewis 30

2 Fernando 28

3 Massa 27

4 Kimi 22

5 Nick Heidfeld 15

Pointing sys was different btw.

Im just gonna start a chain of these lol

Fernando won Monaco and, apparently, Ron Dennis wanted Lewis to win bc he was faster. That’s gotta hurt ngl.

I knew he won his first in Canada (his 6th race in f1) bc it’s my hometown. What a masterclass drive by Lewis! Finished five-tenths ahead of Fernando!

And soon after, we were gifted this masterpiece of a picture that, fast forward to 2022, was used by Lewis as a reminder to Fernando lol

Lewis finished top 3 in his first 9 races and 9th on his 10th race.

What a G.

BRO, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!

Fernando went to Spanish media and said McLaren was favouring Lewis bc he’s british.

Which then started an onslaught of racist comments and articles from Spanish media and fans.
