The fact that Tesla autopilots abort self driving 1 second before a crash so the company can state ā€œself driving wasnā€™t active during the collisionā€ should be grounds to dismantle the entire company.

Like, seriously, if youā€™re making 4000 pound death machines, and you program this shit to work on a technicality? Your company should be dismantled. Gone. No recourse. Just terrible shit dude

Iā€™m so sorry butā€¦ #reality

[Image IDs: Image #1: Tumblr reply from d-jevil reading: haha very funny spreading misinformation tumblr funnyThing jame7t. Now please tell me I do not actually live in a reality where this is happening.

Image #2: Text from Jun 15, 2022 reading: NHTSA is already investigating 16 incidents involving Autopilot where Tesla vehicles slammed into parked emergency vehicles. On average in those incidents, NHTSA said: (start highlight) "Autopilot aborted vehicle control less than one second prior to the first impact." /End IDs]

Absolutely love Hamlet Act 4 Scene 5 where Horatio enters the room along with the Queen and the Gentleman who explains about Ophelias madness, stands there for a while without saying anything, then leaves right after Ophelia. Horatio, why are you even there? Whatā€™s going through your mind? Why does everyone who isnā€™t named Hamlet literally ignore you in every scene? Why didnā€™t you mention Opheliaā€™s madness to Hamlet when you guys met up in Act 5? I have so many questions.

What I find so fascinating about Horatio is how he seems to act merely as Hamletā€™s shadow for most of the play. Thereā€™s one line in Act 5 where Claudius addresses Horatio directly*, but other than that, all the major characters except Hamlet act as though he doesnā€™t exist. Heā€™s present when Rosencrantz and Guildenstern speak to Hamlet after the play-within-a-play, but his presence isnā€™t acknowledged by either of them. He is present in the above mentioned scene with Ophelia, but nobody acknowledges the fact that heā€™s there. In the gravedigger scene, there is no actual dialogue between him and the Gravedigger. Itā€™s the same with the Osric scene, where Osric only ever seems to acknowledge and reply to Hamletā€™s remarks, and during the duel where nobody except Hamlet talks to him.

Then thereā€™s the dialogue between Horatio and Fortinbras at the end. Now that Hamlet is dead, itā€™s Horatios turn to step out of the shadows and finally take the centre stage.

ā€”

* Ā«I pray thee, good Horatio, wait upon himĀ»

Iā€™m not saying itā€™s possible to do a staging of Hamlet where Horatio is Hamletā€™s imaginary friend, but Iā€™m also not saying it isnā€™t possible.

ā€¦ there is an idea of a Horatio, some kind of abstraction, but there is no real me, only an entity, something illusory, and though I can hide my cold gaze and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable: I simply am not there.

There's also the equally devastating possibility of Horatio being a ghost that only Hamlet can see (and the guards and Fortimbras?), and Claudius' line could be read as a prayer to Hamlet's departed friend, unaware that he's right there.

Broke: Classroom discussion about whether Hamlet is going mad or only feigning madness
Woke: Hamlet is clearly feigning madness and/or taking the piss when speaking to people he doesnā€™t trust, because in conversation with Horatio, the one person he trusts completely, he is entirely lucid
Bespoke: The answer to the question of whether Hamlet is going mad or not, depends on whether you accept Horatioā€™s existence at face value or believe that Hamlet is hallucinating a lot more than just his fatherā€™s ghost

does Hamlet trust Horatio completely because he knows Horatio is dead?

I was reading a book (about interjections, oddly enough) yesterday which included the phrase ā€œIn these days of political correctnessā€¦ā€ talking about no longer making jokes that denigrated people for their culture or for the colour of their skin. And I thought, ā€œThatā€™s not actually anything to do with ā€˜political correctnessā€™. Thatā€™s just treating other people with respect.ā€

Which made me oddly happy. I started imagining a world in which we replaced the phrase ā€œpolitically correctā€ wherever we could with ā€œtreating other people with respectā€, and it made me smile.Ā

You should try it. Itā€™s peculiarly enlightening.

I know what youā€™re thinking now. Youā€™re thinking ā€œOh my god, thatā€™s treating other people with respectĀ gone mad!ā€

Happy Valentineā€™s Day.

Eleven years old. Still true.

it drives me bonkers the way people don't know how to read classic books in context anymore. i just read a review of the picture of dorian gray that said "it pains me that the homosexual subtext is just that, a subtext, rather than a fully explored part of the narrative." and now i fully want to put my head through a table. first of all, we are so lucky in the 21st century to have an entire category of books that are able to loudly and lovingly declare their queerness that we've become blind to the idea that queerness can exist in a different language than our contemporary mode of communication. second it IS a fully explored part of the narrative! dorian gray IS a textually queer story, even removed from the context of its writing. it's the story of toxic queer relationships and attraction and dangerous scandals and the intertwining of late 19th century "uranianism" and misogyny. second of all, i'm sorry that oscar wilde didn't include 15k words of graphic gay sex with ao3-style tags in his 1890 novel that was literally used to convict him of indecent behaviour. get well soon, i guess...

Can everyone who reads this PLEASE reblog it?!?!?Ā  Libraries literally saved my life as a child!

Being abused at home, bullied at school and lost in the world, the library and all the books I could escape to the most amazing worlds, kept me alive!

I would walk to the library, and spend all day, from 10 am to 9 pm reading there!! I got special awards for how many books I read, I wrote little blurbs on why i loved the books (probably why I love to BETA and do ARCs)Ā

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE Just hit the green arrows and the reblog!!!

As a 50 year old woman, the library offers me so much. Digital art pads to borrow, 3D printing, book clubs that are face to face (yeah, the introvert likes face to face because a moderator will stomp on anyone getting snarky)

New books in LARGE PRINT! Iā€™m visually challenged and as much as I love my kindle, The feel of a real book in my hands will always be a beloved feeling!

Our library also has quarterly books sales of almost free books!! For 5$USD we get in a day early and can buy as many as we want. Anyone else has to wait and there is a limit for the first 2 days.

Also many, many libraries have inter library loan(it may be called something different). This means if they donā€™t have the item you want, they can get it for you. This may include photocopy/pdf of articles. This can also include along with books and DVDs, microfilm/fiche which is also a huge resource. Check around for libraries that are listed as depositories if you want to look at government documents.

Remember that many colleges and universities have open stacks for the public. You will likely have to pay a membership fee but you will get to stuff.

What iā€™ve gathered. The elderly ladies are something to be feared, libraries have an aura about them, and people should be in more

ID tag: ā€œNot lost on me that a black queer artist and a white country singer came together to sing a song about belonging. America is starved for connection across divides and that performance shows how much music has the power to heal. #grammys #tracychapman

Iā€™ve loved this song since I was 15 and I remember exactly where I was (in my - not very fast - car) the first time I heard it. Iconic.

prayer to whichever dead catholic person is most appropriate: may I not have to run a whole week of surprise camps on crutches. in a knee brace.

Im agnostic raised liberal protestant, but absolutely the catholics got saints right. Sometimes your problem is so fucking specific you need Some Guy. If you're listening, Guy of Workers Who Have Strain Injuries,

No fucking WAY, there's actually a knee injury Guy? Catholicism accidentally reinventing the medical specialty system......

I know you're wondering: are there slutty pictures of him revealing his knees?
