I never considered something about Thriller Bark, which was that this was Usopp's "first" arc back with the crew...since he was using the alter ego of Sogeking during Enies Lobby. He was proving his worth as himself to himself. That's why he takes so much of the spotlight and is essentially the advance team on the island ahead of the Monster Trio and Franky. This was Usopp's time in the spotlight as much as it was Brook's. Perona was an enemy that only he could defeat since he was already too pessimistic to be affected by her Negative Hollows. As opposed to being OHKO'd by it like everyone else. In fact, since Perona fights using deception and redirection like Usopp, it's almost like a mirror match of gimmicks and cheap tricks where Usopp needs to surpass himself. For a moment, he even falters in his self-worth and brings out the Sogeking mask again, but he manages to pull through and make himself the person he invented Sogeking to be. A while back I said post-timeskip Usopp could solo Thriller Bark Luigi's Mansion style, but truth be told, that's basically the point. Thriller Bark is Usopp's challenge. That's why it's one huge haunted house carnival attraction. And that's also why this arc that nobody besides me seems to like has connective tissue with what's happening currently on Elbaph.
