Behind the Scenes of Wild Blue Yonder - Part Four

Excerpt from Benjamin Cook’s article on Bernard Cribbins in DWM #598

Gareth announces that David and Catherine are on the travelator next. They take their positions. David runs on the spot and stretches his legs to warm up. Then he runs – fast – and propels himself off the runway. “I could always do the sprint,” he says, catching his breath. “Can’t do long distance. I peak too soon. It probably shows my impatience. I can just about manage the 200m, but anything beyond that… I’m probably slower than I was 12 years ago.” That’s disputable. The crane, which is carrying the camera, was too slow for David in the practice run just now. Either the crane has got to speed up or David has got to slow down. “How come Tom gets a techno crane?” Rachel Talalay – director of Special 1: The Star Beast – has popped in to see what’s going on and she’s impressed. “I’ve not seen this before. It looks amazing!” “Sometimes I’m a busy man,” says Tom [ Kingsley, director of Special 2: Wild Blue Yonder ], “sometimes I’m just a man waiting for a big crane.”

You can watch the stream live on youtube here :)

Michael was just on stage presenting together with Anna Maxwell Martin - the Good Omens S1 Beelzebub! ❤:)

Did the Olivier Awards actually spell David's name wrong?

yep, not only David did not win but they actually mispelled his name >:o :D

I actually decided I wanted David halfway through writing Episode Three. And every moment after that, I was writing Crowley for David. Every moment before that, I was writing ‘a Crowley’, but it was the scene 1941, in the Blitz, where I realized: I’m writing a scene in a church, Aziraphale is in there, there are Nazi spies, he thinks he’s being really clever, but actually he’s not, he’s in all sorts of trouble and Crowley has to come down the aisle of the church and rescue him. And of course, Crowley is now on consecrated ground - so he’s like a man on really, really hot sand on the beach. He’s walking down like: ‘ow, ow, ow, ow, ow’. And I’m writing the scene and I thought: David Tennant. There is no other human being I could think of who I want to do this scene. - Neil Gaiman, March 2019, SXSW

This is part of my ongoing Discworld jacket embroidery project. Of course Great A'Tuin has to be on there. And of course it has to be the biggest one of them all.

I'm going to put the finished product in my masterpost, but I'm so proud of the thing that I have to put it in an extra post beforehand. Enjoy!

Update!!!

Behold: the elephants! 😁

The turtle moves! Now it's just the "cargo" left. And the universe. Well.

Update 3: Why did I have to try single thread for the disc. Why. How did I ever think that was a good idea. This is taking aaaages.

I'd say never again, but I know myself too well...

Still trying to decide whether to outline the landmass with darker thread or not. It would make the lands more distinct - but it might also make it look more like a comic. If you have any thoughts on it, let me know. I'll only decide once I've finished the rest of the disc and that'll be at least a week, if I had to guess.

I finally had some time to continue and the disc is done! Now just some stars, planets, etc...

My estimate is that this took about 150 hours. About half of that went into the disc because I discovered single thread embroidery.

And because I always think it's really interesting to see the back of the embroidery - bonus:

On to the next one! Maybe I'll do the luggage now.
