i know a lot of baby gays follow me so here’s a slice of gay/trans history (mostly from america) that shouldnt be forgotten:

~ the pink triangle from the holocaust was reclaimed for the ACT UP campaign

~ clinton was the first president to allow research on AIDS and after that a cure was found in about 3 years

~ the white stripe on the trans flag stands for nonbinary genders

~ the purple stripe on the bi flag also stands for nb genders

~ it was, in fact, illegal to have sex with someone of the opposite sex, and people were arrested in their own homes for it

~ “transgender” wasn’t a widely used term until the 90′s-ish, so many trans people identified as crossdressers

~ to prevent crossdressers, it was illegal to be out in public without at least 3 items of clothing of your sex, which largely affected lesbians as well

~ a large part of the stonewall riot was led by the flamboyantly gay youth

(if i got anything wrong, please let me know + feel free to add on)

don’t let our generation forget our roots, especially now, with everything that’s going on in the world.

-Nancy Reagan blamed bisexuals for AIDS spreading to the straight population

-Undercover police officers would present themselves as gay men to lure in actual gay men and arrest them

-The Stonewall riots were not the first riot in response to police raids on gay bars

Some important transgender figures as well:

-Lou Sullivan was a gay trans man who was denied sex-reassignment surgery as “attraction to the same sex” was one of the qualifications for being medically classified as transgender, and therefore campaigned to have homosexuality removed from the qualifications

-Reed Erikson was a transgender man who founded the Erikson Educational Foundation to help educate transgender people and their families as well as fund projects supporting transgender people.

-Robert Eads was the subject of the documentary Southern Comfort. He was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and dozens of physicians refused to treat him due to him being a transgender man. By the time he was offered surgery the next year, the cancer had spread and he died two years later despite treatments

-Michael Dillon was a British Physician who was the first trans man to undergo a phalloplasty by plastic surgeon Harold Gilles. He wrote a book saying being transgender (though that word had not been used yet) is innate and should be treated medically rather than psychologically. Despite not being licensed, he also assisted in the first male-to-female sex change on Roberta Cowell.

-Sylvia Rivera, a Latina trans woman and one of the founders of STAR, is credited with throwing the first stone in the stonewall riots

-Christine Jorgenson was an actress, nightclub singer, and entertainer, noted for being one of the first well-known transgender figures in America. She used her platform to advocate for other transgender people.

-Lili Elbe was a Danish painter who was one of the first identifiable recipients of sex reassignment surgery. She may have been intersex, but this is unknown. She often modeled for her wife’s paintings, which is how she discovered her identity

-Roberta Cowell was a racing driver and WWII pilot. She is the first known British woman to undergo sex reassignment surgery, assisted by Michael Dillon. She claimed to have been intersex, which is how she justified the surgery. Her transition was highly publicized, but the press often excluded traits of hers that didn’t line up with the typical idea of how transgender people behaved
