I think this is the best time to remind everyone of a story. Tove Jansson published her first Moomin book in 1945. This means the book came out just as the world was finishing a war that had devastated most continents, engaged more countries than not and cost countless lives.

Tove Jansson was a young woman in her prime when World War II broke out. Suddenly, her work was in jeopardy as arts did not sell that well. Her friends and family were in danger all the time. And her life became unbearably bleak. Selling and buying of items was controlled heavily, and people had the tendency to hoard. Social gatherings were forbidden, especially frivolous activities like parties. She had to spend a lot of time warded off in her apartment or in a shelter.

As a sensitive artist, Tove took this heavily. She enjoyed the company of other people and valued the small joys of life like pretty and useless items, just for how nice and beautiful these things were. Suddenly, she did not have as much reason to produce her art and all these small things she enjoyed were denied from her. Not to mention the constant anxiety she felt for her loved ones and the entire world.

But during all of this, Tove took to writing. This soon became her means to escape the horrible situation. It became a book about whimsical adventures, family and caring. She wrote in the world and feelings she experienced in the safe summers of her childhood. This book came to be named “Småtrollen och De Stora Översvämningen”, know to international audiences today as “The Moomins and The Great Flood”. This would become a first book in a series that captured the hearts of children and adults alike all around the world.

It is often said that Moomins were born because of WWII. Tove hit the hardest times of her life, only to produce what many would consider her greatest work. Her way to relieve her anxiety and despair produced a work that has resonated with audiences for decades. This year 2020, first Moomin book turns 75. And right now, this coincidence truly makes one think.

Whenever your life seems too scary and devastating to live, remember how Moomins came to be.

so in philosopher’s stone, quirrell does actually address voldy as ‘lord voldemort’ not ‘the dark lord’, making him the only follower of voldemort shown to do so iirc. i know the reason for this is most likely just that it was the first book and jkr hadn’t ironed out all the details yet, but i like the idea that living with him on the back of your head for a year or so gets you first-name privileges

You Wouldn’t Cover Up A Monet

Part Four

Marlene and Lily are brushing their teeth in the girl’s lavatory. Mary slept in the girl’s dormitory last night for the first time since the attack and today would be her first day back in classes. And for the past three days since Lily ended her friendship with Severus he had been sleeping outside the Gryffindor Common Room, every night.
Lily: All I saw was someone with long blonde hair and another with black.

Hey guys!

If you wanna, can you reblog if you’re an HP RP blog? Or even just an RP blog with a little bit of HP sprinkled in. I realized last night there are literally tons of blogs out there that I hadn’t even seen because of all the RPers in the spotlight. Other than some I followed after making this side blog, I see literally the same 5 or so people on my dash multiple times. I’d just like to see more? Or you can suggest a blog i dunno.

I think it’s strange Rowling made ambition one of Slytherin’s traits. It’s portrayed as evil, or at least inherently harmful (since it’s what drives several characters to join Voldemort) but I think ambition is an important trait for a person to have. It’s what compels us to better ourselves and our world, to make sure our kids have it better than we did. And I’ve dated people with no ambition before. 0/10, would not recommend.

Maybe it’s a British thing? I can’t say because I’m not British, but I’ve noticed a few quotes from British people who say that ambition is frowned upon in their culture.

A woman, who shall remain nameless, said to me, ‘You’re going to love LA, Paul, because over here ambition is not a dirty word.’ And I thought, ‘Well, you’ve named one of the things that I feel quite patriotic about.’ It’s still a little bit embarrassing in Britain if you’re seen to try.
- Paul Bettany

As a Brit, I can confirm that we tend to be suspicious of ambitious people. It’s considered something of a social taboo to be open about your ambition. That might explain why British actors are so often considered ‘modest’ by American audiences, because they have something of what we call “British reserve”, which values modesty over ambition.

British friends, is this true???

I’m not British but I recognize this as a Swedish thing aswell, we have this thing called “jantelagen” that is a set of rules that a danish author wrote down in 1933. These rules are all basically “you are not special/smart/good and should not think so” and are engraved in our society. It’s often frowned upon to believe in yourself or be outspoken about your ambitions since that would imply that you think you are better then others. People who go to certain schools are made fun of because the schools are good and hard to get into. When people talk about their success they also downplay it and make fun of it themselves. Me and all my friends are in our early 20s which means we are constantly asked what our life plan is and what we want to do and the answer is always no matter how sure you are of what you want to do “maybe continue studying if I can get in anywhere, but I don’t know” because saying “studying this in that school” would be seen as brash and almost rude. This is slowly shifting but ambition is still seen as something shameful and being modest on the brink of self deprecating is more socially accepted and expected of you

I can confirm this is also part of Finnish and Norwegian culture in my experience..
