there aren't enough time traveller shows set in the future. what are you afraid of? being wrong? embarrassing yourself? yawn, snore. it's high camp. look at back to the future 2. they didn't get a single thing right and it's a fucking smacker of a movie. a classic. making overdramatic assumptions about the future is exactly the kind of unapologetic kitsch that's been missing from cinema since the mid 2000s

I feel robbed of a different George O'Malley

George O'Malley had the potential, as a character, to be so much more. We could've seen a depth to his disconnection to his heavily masculine, Republican, Catholic family that went beyond "I don't like hunting and I went to college". We could've seen him struggle for more than one reason against his father's wish for him to be with Callie. We could have seen a conclusion to the dead-end jokes and heavy queercoding that defined his early appearances.

George O'Malley should have been gay. I know that it's a tall ask to expect a show that debuted 17 years ago to introduce a fully normalised LGBTQ main character with no stigma or snidery attached, but Grey's has always stood out to me as one of the more progressive shows with a lot of topics raised ahead of their time. Rather than cheat on Callie because of a horribly-written affair with Izzie, George and Callie could have mutually worked out why their relationship wasn't working and gone down a path that also helped Callie come to terms with her own bisexuality when the time came.

George O'Malley should have survived. I'm not going to deny the show dramatic license or pretend I don't know why things soured BTS, but it still stands for me. George could have spent Season 6 in deep recovery, but survived. He could have been permanently physically disabled and gone on to thrive outside his medical career; he was always the one on the fence about his passion and capability in the field, right? There's something in that. George was hoping to specialise in trauma. He knows what it's like growing up feeling outcast. I would have liked to see him the role of a carer, a fixer; someone who mentors young people in the position he was in. He could have worked with LGBTQ and/or disabled young people interested in the medical field. It would have been interesting to watch the career progression of a principal character outside of just going up or down the surgical chain.

On a more superficial note, I would have liked to see a male love interest introduced for George either before or after the accident. It would have tangled canon by introducing a new character at that point, but with the amount that come and go it would certainly have been doable.

And yeah, it's likely the character would phase out of screentime a couple of seasons in. But I would have still been satisfied with just the knowledge that somewhere in canon there's a gay, disabled, happily married man living not so far away from the hospital, living a life with more fulfilment than the surgical field ever seemed to give him.

obsessed with all the trent writers on ao3 who took one look at him and unanimously decided that he's constantly down bad. just the easiest shag imaginable. ready for it 24/7

Other things trent writers were completely correct about

- So many books that he never reads

- His daughter is a feral demon child

- Very un-amicably divorced

- Smoker

- Heavy rock fan

- Messy messy house

- Like I said earlier, bit of a slag

i miss when most of this site got really into the moomins all at once and everyone was just obsessed with posting about snufkin and how he and the little white marshmallow guy were gay and in love and there was surprisingly little weird discourse about it for a popular tumblr thing, but i also know it could never be like it was again so i try not to wish for its return. but i do miss it.

the couple of months or so in 2019 where this site got really into moomins was like when on christmas day the soldiers in ww1 on opposite sides of the trenches came up to play football together and then immediately went back to shooting each other after

obsessed with that one british aesthetic that's like. flat caps and mumford and sons and flower boxes outside pubs and edison bulbs and food vans selling artisan sausages and the sound of collared doves and farmer's markets and raw-wood garden furniture and ted lasso and let her go by passenger and city parks that don't feel like they're in the city at all and chips in newspaper and brighton pier and fluffy mongrels on the beach and liverpool matches and gazebos and whatever the cartoon TSB adverts have going on and. yeah

So I was rewatching “Trent Crimm: The Independent” and I definitely think the seeds for Trent leaving his job were right there.  When Ted asks him what he loves to do.

And it’s interesting that Trent seems to hesitate a second, before agreeing that yes, it’s writing.

It’s not a LONG hesitation, but it definitely meant something.  And I think he does love writing, but maybe already he was feeling like he didn’t love the rest of his job.

I keep thinking about that scene in “Do the Right-est Thing” when Sam tells him, and everyone else, that he’s not here to talk about the loss.  He’s here to talk about something more important.  Look how ENGAGED Trent is at that point.

I don’t think Trent hates being a sports journalist.  I think his accusation to Ted in the restaurant about irresponsibility and how much the club means to this town is sincere.  But I wonder if Trent really liked the kind of journalist that he’d become.

Does he like being the guy who unleashed the media hounds on someone who was clearly overwhelmed when the point about the man’s inexperience had already been made pretty effectively?

Does he like being the man that Rebecca Welton calls in specifically to write a hit piece meant to turn the town against someone?

There is an undertone of wonder in Trent Crimm’s article, when he talks about the Lasso way.  About how in a business that celebrates ego, Ted reins his in.  Et cetera and so on.  And their dynamic after that does change.  Trent still asks difficult questions, of course, but not with the same tone.  His questions are an invitation to explain rather than an attack.

And even later, in Headspace, when Trent sees Ted in the bar.  He asks him for a quote, of course, but seems genuinely interested in Ted’s response.  And even though Ted was clearly lying, and Trent pretty obviously sees it, he doesn’t call him out.  He leaves it alone.

Like everyone else who meets Ted, Trent isn’t quite the same person he was anymore.

And then Nate Shelley comes up to him and basically commissions another hit-piece.  And unlike Rebecca, he brought the ammunition himself.  And Trent publishes it, because he feels like he has to, and then, he doesn’t just quit.  He basically burns all of his bridges in the process.

I kind of think the Trent Crimm of the pilot/Biscuits wouldn’t have cared about the article.  He’d have written it, published it, and not lost a moment of sleep over it.  I don’t think it was the first one he wrote.  Rebecca chose him for a reason.  And while Roy is Roy, I think the “colossal prick” comment probably had some justification.

But Ted asks Trent what he loves, and I think Trent realized then what he DIDN’T love and that set the dominos in motion.  It’ll be fascinating to see what he does in season 3.
