Cupcakes Study Break!

Being a house council member and a dedicated fan of cupcakes, I decided to put on a “decorate your own cupcakes” study break on Sunday!

I started out the day with baking 60 cupcakes in my friend's apartment and then we brought them all back to Chase and enjoyed!!

Easter @ Smith

If going to college is your first time living away from home one of the weirdest changes is not having your family to celebrate the holidays with! Easter was always a big deal for my family so when I got to college it was weird to not have them celebrate with, but through my time at college, I have found ways to celebrate the day still special!

First my family is wonderful and they stocked me up on Easter candy

Then on Easter Sunday my wonderful little sib asked me if I would take her to Mass so we went to a lovely service and ran into ALOT of other Smithies!

Then we went back to Smith for Brunch

After the morning festivities were over I went home to skype with my family and then I did my homework for the day but I took a quick break to draw this

So I hope that help you see what it's like to celebrate holidays while your at college. If you have a holiday that means a lot to you and want to know about celebrating it at Smith write me and I will tell you more about it!

How to beat procrastination (Even when you really really don’t want to work)

My name is Alex and I am a terrible procrastinator. If there is work to I will put it off until the night before (or the hour before) it’s due. But this weekend I (gasp) actually got an early start on my homework and finished it well before it was due! I will share my tips here!

Step One: Work for only 5 minutes

I'm serious, set a timer sit down and just do your project for 5 minutes no more. It can be hard to sit down and start a big project but 5 minutes usually seems doable.

Step Two: Look at how much work you were able to get done in 5 minutes

How much did you get down in those five minutes? for me I read about 6 pages. So I took that data and figured out how long it would take me to do the rest of my reading.

Step Three: Using your data figure out how to break your reading into small steps with a set time frame

After I looked at all my data I figured out it would actually only take me 40 minutes to finish my work so I figured out I could either do 8 five minute reading sessions or 4 ten minute reading sessions. So I decided I would do 4 ten minute session which didn’t seem nearly as bad as I thought it would

I hope this helps you in studies!!! <3

Smithies Get Jobs!!

Hey Guys!!

I just wanted to tell you something super exciting that just happened in my life!

I just excepted my first after college job with Impact America, specially Impact Alabama in Birmingham Alabama.

I am so so excited! This was my first choice job and I am so happy to be a furture member of the team!

So basically, this position is an Americorps Fellowship and I am working with Impact Alabama, a non-profit in Birmingham Albama. Impact Alabama is an awesome organzation that helps children and families with a lot of different services from tax prep, to health, to education. However; my main job will be being a debate coach for Middle School kids from disadvataged schools. Stephan Black, the founder and president, believes that academic debate is most beneficial extracurricular kids can do to prepare themselves for college and life and as a former high school debate I totally agree. However, a lot of the most sucessful debaters come from private subarban schools where they can travel a lot and have a lot of coaching and resources. So Impact America’s goal is to give kids at disadvataged schools that same oppotunity. I am so excited to take this job and be a part of this organization!!

So my job starts in Late July and I will be moving to Birmingham Alabama next year! I’ve never been to the south before and I am so excited to go!!!

So I just wanted to share this update with you and also prove that even if you are a history major with pink hair you too can get awesome job!!

KPOP @ RYTHMN NATIONS

As some of you know, I am part of the Smith Kpop Dance Crew (SKDC for short) and this has been by far my favorite extra curricular at Smith! Basically, we learn dances performed by SKDC groups in their music videos. We do a large variety of styles of dance from stuff that is super cutesy to stuff that is super hip-hoppy.

Rhythm nations is an event where all of the cultural groups get to perform and it is our biggest performance of the year! This was a big year for me for a couple reason. First, this was my first year being in two dances! If you feel up to it, you can choose to be in two dances. It’s a lot of work and much bigger time commitment but it’s so much fun I’m glad I did it! Also, this was my first year teaching a dance! Members of SKDC take turns teaching dances to the groups and this year I taught a super cute dance called “Cupid”!

Well, that’s enough of me talking… If you want to watch the performance I’ll put it right here! I’m in the first, second and fourth dances!

Whoops! I posted it on my other blog! Here it is on Alex @ Smith

Little Known Smith Secrets

1.       Smith Free and for Sale

Ok so maybe this one isn’t so secret but it's definitely an awesome thing we have at Smith! Smith Free and Sale is a Facebook group where students can buy and sell things from other students and it is so useful! I have bought a mini fridge on free and for sale in addition to chargers for my phone and I have sold some of my clothes and extra makeup on there! You can definitely score some great deals!  Another awesome thing that’s going on in Free and for Sale is that you can either offer rides or offer to pay for rides to Boston or airport! I so much prefer traveling with another Smithie than in a cab or bus and it's often cheaper too!

2.       Digital Imaging Center

I am a senior and I just discovered this one! There is a way to more the digital imaging center (like 3d printers!) but what I have been using it off is all of the design software they have! They have computer loaded with the full Adobe suite and other design software, huge high-quality printers and Wacom tablets all free for you to use anytime!!! Also, there are always people to help you out!

3.       Forbes Library

Ok, this is technically not part of Smith but it is right next store! Want book but it's checked from Nelison? Want more a read for fun book? Looking for a good quiet place to study? Forbes library is a good place for you! There are a wide variety of book nad lots of nice study spaces!

What am I doing after college?

As most of you know I am a senior, and as all seniors will tell you, “What are you doing after Smith?” is the scariest question you can be asked. It’s scary because a lot of us don’t know what we’re doing after college and the future can look very uncertain.

However, after I lot of thinking I’ve decided this question doesn’t have to be as scary as it seems. While there is still a lot that is still uncertain about what I’m doing after Smith, Ill tell you here what I do know

1.  I’ve given up finding one job that combines all my interests

I’m one of those people that has A LOT of very diverse interests. I love illustration and art, I love college admissions and education, I love fashion and styling I love history and research, I love public speaking and communication. I have finally realized that I am not going to find one job right out college that encompasses all of my interests. But I’ve also realized that that doesn’t that that eventually I can’t do something that combines all of my interests. It just mean right now my job should be a stepping stone for what I want to do in the future.

2.  Right now I’m applying to jobs I am well qualified for

If you had asked me what kind of jobs I wanted to apply to I would have said fashion or graphic design. Problem? I can barely sew and I definitely can use Photoshop or Illustrator or any of that jazz. So applying to graphic design or fashion jobs right now would be a little bit hard and probably just cause more anxiety than anything else. So, instead I’m applying for jobs I am really excited about AND that I am well qualified for like college admissions and education. This makes me feel so so much more confident about applying for jobs and when I get a job I know I can be a really good employee and build the bridge to a place where I can have everything!

3.  My Smith friends are my best resource!!

Who has been my main source of support help and love during this process? That would be my amazing friends and housemates!!! My friends helped me when I was panicking and showed me I actually I do have skills and experiences that would be useful for any job! They have helped me edit my resume and cover letters, helped me practiced for interviews and so much more!!! Halimat, Serena, Maddy and Farah, I am so grateful for all of you help!

4.  I WILL travel!!! Just maybe not right this second…

Anyone who knows me knows I am hell-bent on going to Korea! I didn’t get to study abroad because I am a transfer student so I have always wanted to make up for that experience by working aboard. I was originally going to apply for EPIK which is a government program to teach English in Korea, but after realized I was going to have to shell out over $2,000 to get the qualification to do that, I decided I have to put that on the shelf for now. But I realized that that doesn’t mean I am not going to Korea. I am applying for some jobs in Korea and if I don’t get those I will find some way to work and travel there!

5.  I am constantly finding new things that are helping me figure out what I want to do

So I am notorious for an inbox with over 1,000 unread messages. I overlook a lot those mass emails but yesterday I opened one sent by the history department and I learned something totally new! The email was an advertisement for a graduate program in Digital Humanities and Applied History. What?! I didn’t know these things existed but they are totally up my ally! I LOVE history but I am not cut out for the academic history life, but teaching history using cool interactive digital means??? Sign me up! This email opened up a whole category of jobs that would combine a lot of my interests and I didn’t even know existed yesterday!
