the key to love (part 1)

☆ summary: every child is born with a key shaped tattoo printed somewhere on their body. however, the tattoo is invisible and unable to be seen by the naked eye. when they get the privilege of meeting their soulmate, the key becomes visible; a permanent reminder that you’ve found your one true love. after years of dating hopelessly, you’re beginning to believe that your soulmate doesn’t exist, and if he does, that you’ll never meet him. however, after a spontaneous encounter with a good looking stranger, everything changes.

☆ genre: soulmate!au, fluff, angst, wong yukhei

☆ warning: this hasn’t been proofread

The day seemed never-ending. Your shift lasted for hours and hours, and with the cafe being understaffed, you had hardly received a break. Your heels ached and the familiar rumble of hunger wouldn’t leave you (or your stomach) alone. It didn’t help that the customers felt the same way. They were extra short on patience and you couldn’t seem to appease anyone, no matter how hard you tried.

A line had formed during your ten minute break. It was long and the last customer was almost out the door because there wasn’t any more space in the quaint cafe. Even though the shop was small, it gained popularity as the only coffee shop in all of town. It was a place commonly frequented by families and college students alike. However hectic the day had been, you were determined to do your job right and keep up the level of quality people expected.

This was part of the problem. Every time you made a small mistake, you’d force yourself to go back and fix it. Start over and get it right; that was the cafe’s motto after all. You could tell people were getting frustrated, but when they took a sip of the warm, delicious liquid, they all changed their minds. They only appreciated your hard work after they no longer had to wait. The tips were good though, so you tried your best to ignore the blatant disrespect and rude cursing every once and a while.

You had just finished up an order and handed a tall lanky man his coffee. He excepted it with a sigh and left the line. You couldn’t help but notice the way he rolled his eyes dramatically and clenched your fist in anger. He hadn’t even left a tip…..

“Y/N, could you come here for a second?” your friend called in her sweet voice. Your best friend Millie was a delicate thing. Her heart was too big for this world, and you cherished her optimism. Unfortunately not everyone seemed to agree. She hated working the register because of the yelling, getting reprimanded by customers, and the impatience. You often took over for her when you noticed her getting fidgety. It wasn’t hard to tell when she was stressed out, after all, she was an open book who wore her heart on her sleeve.

You rushed over, with a hot cup in your hand that was filled to the bream with steaming liquid. She eyed the coffee and grabbed it quickly before any could spill over the side. “Could we please switch for a little? I need a break….I might snap soon if I don’t get one.” You held in a laugh. Millie wouldn’t hurt a fly, but you understood what she mean’t and being the good friend you were, gladly switched jobs with her.

“Is someone going to take my order, or are you just going to stand there like idiots?” someone called from the line. Millie winced at their harsh tone, but you only smiled and rushed to the register. “Of course sir, what can we get you?”

The line had receded a bit, there were only five or six people left until you could hopefully take a breather.

After taking the man’s order you glanced back at your friend who was rushing around the machines. You let out a little laugh at her antics….she always worried so much.

Your attention snapped back after a voice reached your ears.

“Your laugh is beautiful,” a young man said. He was tall, slim but fit, and he had the most handsome face you had ever seen. A warm blush crept onto your cheeks, which you were sure were red at this point.

“O-Oh, thank you,” you said softly. It was difficult to compose yourself after such a sudden and unexpected compliment. The man could clearly tell you were flustered. He smirked and tilted his head, almost as if he were analyzing every detail of your face. It was strange, you had never been told you had a nice laugh or had someone look at you with such…..admiration.

“Uh, what would you like today?” you asked, in hopes of moving things along. However, even though the interaction was awkward, you couldn’t deny the feeling in your body. It was unlike anything you had ever experienced before. There was a warmth in your stomach and your entire being felt at ease.

“I’ll have a cappuccino” he spoke with a dashing smile. His tone was warm and honeyed. It was hard to describe, but you had never heard such an incredible sound.

“Of course, I’ll get that for you right away.” You punched a couple numbers on the cash register and it dinged loudly. After telling the man his total and yelling his order over your shoulder to Millie, your focus turned back on him. You eyes scanned his face. It seemed so perfect…almost unreal.

“My name is Yukhei, people call me Lucas though.” His introduction surprised you, but it was welcome none-the-less.

“I’m Y/N, nice to meet you Lucas,” you spoke shyly in a quiet tone. There was something about this man, something intoxicating. You were still bashful in his presence. It was something you had never experienced in all your life.

“There’s something about you Y/N, I can’t put my finger on it, but it’s there. I think i’ll be visiting this cafe a lot more often from now on,” he said with a wink. Though it wasn’t flirtatious or suggestive in any way, it was promising.

You stared helplessly until Millie touched your shoulder gently. She handed you the man’s order and you gave it to him. As you were passing him his coffee your skin touched. It was a gentle touch, barley even that, but a touch none the less. It warmed your skin and sent tingles through your body. You could tell he felt it too since his gaze had become intently focused on your touch.

He snapped back into reality and jolted back, almost spilling his drink in the process. You seemed to focus too, a bit scared by his outburst. The customer behind you muttered something and he quickly scrambled for his money.

“Uh, here,” he said quickly. As soon as he had come in, he dashed out, leaving you speechless at the sudden change of demeanor. However, you quickly refocused and got back to work. Millie gasped and you turned back to her in surprise.

“Millie? What happened?” She had spilled the drink in her hand and the liquid pooled around her on the floor. You simply stared in confusion until you noticed her hand. She had one finger outstretched, pointing to your bare shoulder. You looked down, and there it was.

a small, black key, engrained on your skin.

anon; this is really bad….i’m just getting back into writing so please bear with me! I promise things will get better. Feel free to give feedback and request other things! - Saya
