Here’s a bit of maybe interesting Sonic Shorts trivia!
Originally, I had plans of building puppets for all of the characters that appeared in my third Sonic Short. I had built the puppet for Omochao and found it to work perfectly fine, but once I had built and animated Sonic, I apparently scrapped building puppets for Sonic, Tails and Amy and went for the usual hand-drawn approach.
I can’t remember exactly why, but I’d wager it probably had to do with how lifeless and robotic the Sonic rig moved. That works great for Omochao, but not so much for Sonic and friends. Granted, there’s different ways I would build a rig today that would help alleviate or avoid the problem, and the way I animated stuff back then was still pretty robotic, but I think the final result is still more fun to look at compared to how it could’ve been.
Also looks like I started building Amy at one point too. She didn’t end up getting to animation though, and just reuses Sonic’s animation seen in the first GIF.
Ironically, I don’t seem to have the project files for the final short anymore. I only have the puppet version now. Go figure.
Latest preview of my “Sonic 1 Animated”. No sound effects or voices yet. I do those near completion. I’ve been posting these in pieces on twitter, but for here I thought I put them all together. Some scenes have some bugs that need fixing. The next scenes Sonic will fight the blue variant of the Newtrons badniks.
Animated the Sonic 1 concept art. What do you think he should say to the badniks?

This is around 2 evenings worth of work. Still VERY incomplete and some of the motions are off. Hope you all like it!
Some more progress today on Sonic Animated: after Robotnik deploys his robots you see the opening title.
Note:
The green gradient scene at the end will be replaced with a sky view of Green Hill Zone. I also need to add other type of flying badniks and tweak the title some more.

the Sonic X dub is honestly a treasure
Did some more scenes today for Sonic Animated. I combined the King Boom Boo laugh from Sonic Adventure 2 and the Bodysnatchers scream to make the “sound of immeasurable horror”. XD
The next scene will be Robotnik’s speech to the badniks.
Sonic Animated Character Design
The Newtron badnik has a interesting design. It will be a bit harder to animate compared to the other badniks but will be easier to make comedy with them just because how freaky it can look with the right lighting.

Buzz Bomber’s design is very simple and will be easy to animate smoothly.
